Afterlife usually refers to "life after death", "eternal life", "reincarnation", or something like that, wherein the "soul" outlives the material body. The soul is believed to be the spiritual part of the body that will live forever (or at least for a very long time) without the need for a specific body. The Old Testament writings prior to the importation of Greek ideas into the Levant say nothing about an afterlife, and in fact Ecclesiastes says For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
Perhaps in order to avoid dealing with the possibility that when they die they are gone forever, people make up ideas like an "afterlife" as a form of willful ignorance so that they don't have to think about their ultimate fate. [1] Then the prospect of going to hell gets them more frightened than ever.
We cannot contemplate what being unconscious is like because we are conscious, that can make us imagine that our conscious existence will continue even after the brain which is the organ of consciousness has stopped functioning.
