Anonymous are "hackers on steroids," and in some cases an example of leaderless resistance. It is an "Internet Hate Machine." It is without remorse or inhibitions, destroying all that opposes it. Anonymous is not your friend.

Anonymous is Legion.
Anonymous does not forgive.
Anonymous does not forget.
Expect Us.

Anonymous has many descriptions, but here is a brief self-description of Anonymous on one of their sites:

Anonymous is not a group or an entity. It is not you, nor me or any single person. Anonymous is an idea. Those who identify themselves with Anonymous share the common idea of freedom and a world free of depression. Anything that stands between the people and these freedoms is targeted to severe scrutiny and activism. Many misconceptions of Anonymous have been fed to you by the mainstream media and governments around the world. Be assured, we are here to help. We are here to stand up against those who violate your rights as a living breathing human. Freedom of thought, speech, expression, beliefs...freedom to choose how you want to live your life. Anonymous is not a group of hackers much like you have been led to believe. Although a collective who associate themselves with Anonymous are in fact #hacktivists, many of us are simple citizens of this world who will take to the streets in traditional displays of activism. However, the game has changed. Oppression and tyranny have become fat too common in this world and we have risen to meet the occasion. Anonymous is everywhere. We are your neighbors, friends, colleagues, relatives. We are your mailmen, barbers, store clerks and lawyers. In a world of corruption hides it face around every corner, Anonymous is there to meet it with force.[1]

Distributed denial of service attacks

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are used by Anonymous to dispense Internet Justice, such as in the widely-covered attacks on companies that withdrew their services from WikiLeaks. Some of these attacks have been coordinated using the Low Orbit Ion Cannon software developed for this purpose. It may seem insensible to install software from such a source, but this is compounded when users fail to secure their systems behind proxies and similar anonymizing systems, resulting in the parents being perturbed when the police come calling.

Scientology's stance on Anonymous

Anonymous.jpg

The Church of Scientology has issued statements accusing Anonymous of being rapists, pedophiles, drug addicts, terrorists, Germans, German government shills, pharmaceutical industry shills, Nazis, Communists, religious bigots, pirates, controlled by psychiatrists from the extraterrestrial Marcab Confederacy, and, worst of all, a bunch of bored teenagers.

But Srsly...

Anonymous is the default "handle" when posting on 4Chan, which is where the name originates, and many of its achievements, for better or for worse, are attributed to the Anons that frequent the random board, known as /b/. Though famed for its DDoS assault on $cientology websites, and then even more for the protests, Anonymous are also infamous (particularly among its victims) for their multiple raids. Targets in raids are generally picked for the amount of lulz that can be generated by the raid process. Targets can be individuals, particularly Myspace or Youtube users, groups like furries or radical feminists, organisations like $cientology, and online interactive communities like Second Life and Habbo Hotel.

Methods vary depending on the target, or lulz potential, though DDoS via botnetting is the weapon of choice for many seasoned Anons. For example, in retaliation for a radical feminist's (BitingBeaver) blog posting about her teenage son's fondness of pornography, Anons the world over took up arms and started what became known as "The Search For /b/randon," with the intention of locating and delivering to him large quantities of delicious porn. Websites were brought down one-by-one as other radical feminists defended BB (or denied the blog in question existed), and though /b/randon was never found, it was undeniable that the Internet belonged to Anonymous.

Anonymous is divided into several groups:

Oldfags

With reinforcements from Europe and the Soviet Union, Anonymous battles it's way across the internet to find private /b/randon, steamrolling it's way through all opposition.

The so-called old-fags are those who claim to be part of Anonymous since its inception. Of course, it's impossible to tell who's an oldfag, with the exception of incidents that can be described as "epic wins" (i.e., raids), which invariably are credited as the work of oldfags. Additionally, oldfags tend to look down upon the Scientology protests (though not the DDoS raids on the websites) for a number of reasons, including but not limited to: bringing unneeded attention to /b/, and eternally flooding it with those referred to as newfags, who misunderstand anonymous and the true meaning of lulz.

Newfags

Also known as "the cancer killing /b/," newfags are primarily painted as kids who use memes without knowing the meaning or being there when they began. An irritating characteristic of the newfag is, upon learning of anon's many victorious raids, to ask them to attack a target of their choice. This is known as a "personal army" request, and these are typically ignored or dismissed with the phrase "/b/ is not your personal army."

A typical newfag mistake among Anonymous is following the advice of oldfags.

Moralfags

AnonymousBecause.jpg

Despised by many among the rank and file of Anonymous for growing a conscience, and moreso for creating the friendly-neighborhood-anon image, moralfags are the ones who tried to stalk that lady who cooked the kitten in the oven, the same people who tried to DDoS 711chan after they posted the video of the kitten being held underwater. Moralfags are under the mistaken belief that the power of Anonymous should be used for anything other than lulz.

/B/tard

People who post regularly on /b/, or spend more than two hours a day on /b/, is affectionately called a /b/tard, whether by themselves or other /b/tards.

The result

Anonymous made the news and certainly got up the asses of senior Scientologists. It remains to be seen if they can actually bring down the cult Church.

Anonymous, according to Fox News

A vlogger called Goronchev (or "Smugfag," to EDiots and anons) brought Anonymous to the attention of many American sheep when he appeard on Fox News to call anonymous cyberbullies, and revealed that closing your curtains and buying a dog are the only known methods of preventing anons from finding your Myspace password and using it to lock you out and post gay porn on your profile. (It was the same news report that spawned the infamous "Hackers on Steroids" and "Internet Hate Machine" lines.)

Rules 1 & 2

  • Do not talk about /b/
  • Do NOT talk about /b/

The above rules are mostly accepted to apply to raids.
