See the main article on this topic: Secular religions

Creationists often refer to people who consider evolution to be a valid scientific doctrine as "Darwinists". This is a big, ugly use of rhetoric designed to insinuate that "evolutionists" (and atheists) worship Charles Darwin. The biological theory that explains the diversity of life is called "evolution", and those who study it are called "biologists." Those who accept that this theory is sound are called "rational".

Darwin's theory of evolution has largely survived the tests of time

"Darwinist" could refer to someone who studies Darwin the person (for example, a biographer), or perhaps, if Darwin had bothered to start a system of supernatural beliefs (i.e. a "religion"), its adherents could be called "Darwinists".

2009: Darwin Year

The year 2009 was the bicentennial of Darwin's birthday, and heretics everywhere gathered to celebrate. Darwin Day (February 12) joins Evolution Day (November 24) as another pain in the ass for Creationism. 2009 was also the 150th anniversary of the publication of his bestseller, Origin of Species.

Happy birthday man.

Darwin and marriage

Darwin was certainly a logical man. When considering marriage to his cousin he made out a list of "pros" and "cons" before making his final decision. We can see that he was most certainly a product of his time.[1][2]

Pros

  • Children (if it please God)
  • Constant companion (friend in old age) who will feel interested in one
  • Object to be beloved and played with. Better than a dog anyhow
  • Home and someone to take care of house
  • Charms of music and female chit-chat
  • These things good for one’s health. Forced to visit and receive relations but terrible loss of time.
  • My God, it is intolerable to think of spending one’s whole life, like a neuter bee, working, working, and nothing after all — No, no, won’t do
  • Imagine living all one’s day solitary in smoky dirty London House
  • Picture yourself with a nice soft wife on a sofa with a good fire and books and music perhaps compare this vision with the dingy reality of Great Marlboro Street, London

Cons

Take that, creationists!
  • Freedom to go where one liked (presumably loss of)
  • Choice of Society and little of it (presumably loss of)
  • Conversation of clever men at clubs (presumably loss of)
  • Not forced to visit relatives and bend in every trifle
  • Expense and anxiety of children
  • Perhaps quarrelling
  • Loss of time
  • Cannot read in the evenings
  • Fatness and idleness
  • Anxiety and responsibility
  • Less money for books etc.
  • If many children forced to gain one’s bread (But then it is very bad for one’s health to work too much)
  • Perhaps my wife won’t like London; then the sentence is banishment and degradation into indolent, idle fool
