Someone is wrong on

The Internet

Log in:

Encyclopædia Dramatica (ED in internet shorthand) is a wiki project to document internet culture, memes and "drama", for the lulz. For drama, read the epic hubris of most internet arguments and flame wars, or simply folks making tits of themselves on the internet. For the lulz, see any web discussion group with people gloating over the Patriots losing Super Bowl XLII (but not for very long because your IQ will drop rapidly).

ED documents everything that is wrong with the internet, and does this in a style that is certainly one of those things that is wrong with the internet. And proud of it.

Contents

Yes, but is it art?

ED's logo, a very cool character indeed.

ED can prove quite useful in documenting memes and events on the internet and giving frank reviews (read: "scathingly horrible hatchet jobs") of popular websites. Its article on the heavy metal site metal-archives.com is more informative, accurate, and useful than the Wikipedia article, and its extensive section on DeviantART is a must for anyone who ever wonders what the fark happens at that site. However, in ED's own words, "expect blatant, biased lies, and expect boring truths to get deleted quickly."

Where ED fails is mostly in its own obsessions with goatse, "over 9000", furries, and most of all, itself. This is hardly surprising given its contributor base has heavy overlap with 4Chan and anonymous - ED's article on 4Chan is quite favourable by comparison to others. Crap like Project Chanology, however, shows what can happen when it tries to direct its attention to genuinely deserving recipients. Additionally, it has articles on RationalWiki, Conservapedia and Andrew Schlafly himself (warning: NSFW).

Despite its main source of humour lying in its astounding retardation ("on purpose"; not even people who make that claim take it seriously), and the danger of ED saturation long before you reach your third article, it actually has its infrequent, but enjoyable, nuggets of wit here and there. It isn't Jane Austen and it isn't Monty Python. If you go there expecting either, you deserve the drop in IQ — when RationalWiki's funspace just isn't lowbrow enough, ED will certainly satisfy your needs, or break your brain in half and make you regret ever going there.

History

ED was started in 2004 by the fine folk at LJDrama.org, a bunch of trolls documenting and encouraging drama and self-importance fail on LiveJournal. The owner was Sherrod deGrippo, a.k.a. Girlvinyl. The site quickly attracted similarly upstanding netizens from 4chan, the GNAA, Bantown and so forth.

ED tended to load slowly, probably because half of the page was advertising for pornography and sex toys - the left side bar was especially impressive, although they did not stoop so low as to have a link to child porn disguised as the search box.[1] The current incarnation is rather faster.

The .ch incarnation's logo. Business as usual.

Midway through April 2011, /b-tards visitors were surprised to be redirected to a site calling itself "OhInternet." ED's founder and current OhInternet primary contributor, Sherrod DeGrippo, had shut down ED for good, replacing it with a “a more toned down content style and a streamlined design," having decided that having every second wikilink take you to "nigger" or "gay" pages was no longer financially viable. Possibly there were no more places to put porn ads.[2]

Fans promptly started a couple of forks, dredging ED pages out of the Google cache. So far, encyclopediadramatica.ch encyclopediadramatica.se has been the most successful reanimation and ED is pretty much back as it once was. With no porn ads. Oh whoops, porn ads again.[3]
