Lovecraft had a laundry list of phobias, and the greater part of his work was influenced by his fears of women, foreigners, people of color, and seafood. He was a raging racist even by the standards of his time, though he may have mellowed out toward the end of his life.

Several of his works espoused the sanctity of the Anglo-Saxon people while condemning miscegenation and decrying other races and ethnicities, especially Asians, whom he was convinced would conquer the world. Notable works where he openly displayed his racism include the short story The Streetand his obscure poem On the Creation of Niggers.[2]

His book, A Shadow Over Innsmouth was about a village of people who turned into giant fish-people and worshiped the dark gods Hydra and Dagon. Contrary to popular belief, it was inspired not by Lovecraft's fears of miscegenation but by his discovery that his grandmother was in fact Welsh.

Lovecraft was also very open about his views in essays and the hundreds of letters he wrote during his lifetime. Besides his usual racism and misogyny, Lovecraft revealed he was very supportive fascism, aristocracies and elitism in general.

Amazingly, despite his Anti-Semitism, he married a Jewish woman: Sonia Greene. The marriage, unsurprisingly, didn't last very long lasting a mere two years.[3]

Whatever else he was, Lovecraft wrote great horror stories and lavished affection upon his black pet cat whom he named Nigger-Man.[4]
