Poe's law states: Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of Fundamentalism that SOMEONE won't mistake for the real thing.
The law was formulated by ChristianForums user Nathan Poe in response to the fact that so many people can mistake parodies of fundamentalism for the real thing and, equally, mistake the real thing for a joke. This article discusses many of the examples that the Internet provides.
