Poverty is the quality of being impoverished, and unable to provide for one's well-being. A popular myth of social darwinists, and supply-side economists, is that poverty is the fault of the individual. This is not exactly true, however. Often poverty is the result of external conditions that the individual is powerless to alter or improve, ranging from political oppression, periods of war and their aftermaths, to natural disasters or crop failure.
