Purging mediawiki files
Can't that be done automatically?--"Shut up, Brx." 03:33, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- So, can we do that? Maybe every few days a bot can hit purge on all commons images. Is that feasible? Would it take too much processing power or memory or whatever?--"Shut up, Brx." 03:07, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- The problem is that it's your cache, and not a server-side thing. A bot wouldn't work—at least not in the way you describe—though there may be other options. Like detaching ourselves from commons altogether, and having a bot-upload system for requested commons images similar to capturebot's sandbox. Peter is procrastinating. 03:11, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- But the other day, you did the purge for me [1]--"Shut up, Brx." 03:13, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- No, I had to push purge to clear my own cache. I can't do it 'for' you. Peter is procrastinating. 03:16, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- Oh. I misunderstood. A shame. Perhaps you could bring up your idea with the big heads? Nx is gone, but I'm sure Blue and Tmt will have opinions.--"Shut up, Brx." 03:19, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- One day, maybe—it wouldn't be all that easy to do, at least if you wanted to be able to copy over the license information as part of the upload (which would be ideal). Peter is procrastinating. 03:45, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- Oh. I misunderstood. A shame. Perhaps you could bring up your idea with the big heads? Nx is gone, but I'm sure Blue and Tmt will have opinions.--"Shut up, Brx." 03:19, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

- Errm, no. Purge purges the server-side cache. The problem with the blurry/missing images is somewhere in the caching of thumbnails.--ZooGuard (talk) 06:07, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, I didn't know that. Then what do you think we should do? Peter is procrastinating. 06:18, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- Someone with server access and the requisite knowledge should sit down and either find out as much as possible about the bug and report it to the developers of MediaWiki, or try to fix it. Another option is contacting some of the developers of the "use Commons images anywhere" feature or the caching feature and asking for help. Another option is to have a bot patrolling the Commons images, checking somehow if the image is visible and purging them. All of these require different, but non-minimal amounts of time, skill and effort.--ZooGuard (talk) 08:26, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- So Trent, in other words. When it comes to the bot thing, wouldn't it be better to do that on the server itself? Doing it with a bot seems... inefficient. Peter is procrastinating. 08:36, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- But the other day, you did the purge for me [1]--"Shut up, Brx." 03:13, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

- So has anyone in the know given this any thought?--"Shut up, Brx." 13:08, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Adding userspace from $wgExemptFromUserRobotsControl
I'm putting this here as part of a larger discussion we need to have about how we wish to present RW's image to people coming in from searches rather than direct links from forums, etc. Bootmii recently resurrected and put in his userspace a number of articles from the Conservapedia space that were deleted by consensus following an extensive review. I deleted them (and was nearly immediately overruled) because it seems to me that permitting a user to have articles of this nature in his userspace completely undermines the policy behind building a consensus to delete them in the first place: getting rid of material that paints RW in a negative light or that in any event is from a period we've grown out of. I'm not "post-Conservapedia" and I'm not trying to have a mission discussion here. This is solely directed at deleted material of this particular nature being resurrected to userspace.
I would like to see this material omitted from Google searches. It's not. It is possible that Mediwiki permits individual pages to be excluded using metatags, but my understanding is that not all robots obey noindex and it is nonetheless too much to be going through userspace and unilaterally deciding what does and doesn't get tagged.
I suggest Trent add userspace to $wgExemptFromUserRobotsControl so we don't have to worry about this. I'll suggest elsewhere that funspace be added as well. ![]()

- You're an idiot. Brxbrx has the right answer, $wgExemptFromUserRobotsControl just makes the parser ignore the __INDEX__/__NOINDEX__ magic words if you put them on the page.
- Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. You're concerned about RW's image, really? RW has bigger problems than a few crappy articles that someone is saving in their userspace.
- If you're so concerned about those pages, just desysop and block Bootmii. Problem solved. 109.61.82.156 (talk) 18:36, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
$wgNamespaceRobotPolicies should work fine for this. Tmtoulouse (talk) 06:12, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

- Better: that all oldid/difflinks are barred from bots, as that's how they are getting around what Trent has already done (see here for why this has come up again). Peter Urist for Mod! 08:57, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
- diffs and oldids have noindex by default. It seems google only respects it for pagerank calculations, but otherwise displays the page as a search result. Normally you wouldn't see it as it would be buried at the end of the results, but if you search for bootmii conservapedia for example, the search words are so specific that you will see it, as those are the only relevant results. -- Nx / talk 09:10, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
- Ah, so they're indexed, but not given any priority? Then I guess we should leave well-enough alone on this one.--

cquote
When I view RW or RWW in Google Chrome (which I use), the cquote template does not adjust as it should to fit around anything to the right or left, which means the quotes run in front of or behind images or other templates appearing on the page, making them unreadable. I've only seen this in the last couple of days or so, so I'm not sure if it's Chrome that's changed or MediaWiki. In Internet Explorer it looks fine. You have 18800 pages on your watchlist, the watchlist is formed with a php file being run on the server. It has to query and pull up information on each page from the database, such as the last diff and timestamp information. It takes a long time to go through all 18800 pages you have, eventually so long that the server assumes the php file is stuck in a loop and "timesout" the request. There is no reasonable fix I can offer to make a 20,000 page watch list function normally. However, I can purge pages from your watchlist with an older timestamp which should make it work. Re the quotes here, the text already says "in his pompous and self-indulgent e-book Scumbag: Musings of a Subhuman (2007)" right above the quotes, so it would seem a bit redundant to write "TJ Kincaid, Scumbag: Musings of a Subhuman (2007)" again right next to them, but is still appropriate to link to source, hence why I put the links in footnotes. - Specifically, cquote is more for what you'd call pull-quotes where you'd take a fairly terse remark and set it aside, or something that isn't necessarily needed. I.e., it's for decoration. Because it's just separated and with the quote marks, it's not too distracting, It can also look pretty for those quotes at the top for this reason, too. But quotebox and the blockquote tags are far more appropriate to quoting lengths of text for reference as part of the article instead of just decoration. But I still don't understand the issue here. Ref will automatically superscript when you use them, wrapping them in and tags is redundant and breaks the appearance of them.

- I thought the problem was supposed to be the fact that linked words appear subscripted in the quote when there's a ref at the end of the line (see OsakaSun's image link), hence why I suggested subscripting the ref link, which seems to fix this (in a lame workaround sort of way). However, OS has since gone & superscripted ref links in a bunch of quotes that don't contain any other links, so I no longer know what this about. Wēāŝēīōīď

- Was it that bad with IE before, or was it just broken in the update somehow? -- Nx / talk 12:50, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- This is in Opera, as there was no vendor prefix for the gradient. Previously it just fell back to a white background and coloured border but after the update it didn't for some utterly bizarre reason.
theist 12:53, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- But it did exactly the same in IE (which, although I don't check it on IE regularly, looked normal last time I loaded it in IE9), which is why I played with it a bit more to get the fallbacks in place. Unless there was something up between the differences in adding gradients to background or background-image (I've converted them all to the former) I can't figure out what suddenly went wrong.
moral 12:56, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- (ec) I briefly looked at the IE version, and saw it was similarly horrible before you fixed it, but I'm pretty sure I made a colored border/white bg fallback back when I made this. Probably what borked it was the changes to wikitable css (mediawikiwiki:MediaWiki 1.19#Heads-up for MediaWiki administrators) -- Nx / talk 12:58, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- It looks like tables on the wiki don't get a white background any more automatically. This might bork some other stuff on the wiki. -- Nx / talk 13:00, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- I remember you changing something to do with that but have forgotten what. I think it was fairly obscure, though, I'll keep an eye out for what it is and see if there's a conflict. Changes in the wikitable formatting might explain it.

- May have found one. The gadget that puts a box around individual WIGO entries is now transparent, rather than yellow. 13:06, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- Seems to be a loading order issue. Common.css has a ".vote {background:transparent;}" that's no longer needed (it used to be because of the forced white bg on all tables), and it's now loading after the gadget's css for some reason, overriding it. -- Nx / talk 13:09, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
