Five Pillars of Islam
For followers of Sunni Islam, the Five Pillars of Islam remain the core of their faith.
- Saying the Shahadah, translated as "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah"
- Performing the Prayers, the Salath, 5 times per day. Traditionally, the observant attempts to face Mecca when praying, but if he or she cannot, they may symbolically face Mecca by placing an image or object that reminds them of Mecca on the wall they are using.
- Zakah is the giving of Charity. During Ramadan, this is a formal event where those with excess provide food to those without.
- Swam is the fasting done during Ramadan, to remind oneself of the obligations to family, to god, to community; to sacrifice for family, God and community.
- Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca.
Six articles of Belief
There are six articles of Belief that all followers of any denomination of Sunni Islam agree with:
- The belief in Allah (God), as a monotheistic, active, transcendent god.
