Recent changes board

Sould we have a recent changes board on the main page since we have the notice board?--TimS 13:35, 22 May 2007 (CDT)

What do you mean? Helios-talk to me 13:38, 22 May 2007 (CDT)

1 May 2015

Something like this--TimS 08:10, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
(I took the liberty of creating a new headline for this. Greater visibility, and better distinction between this and the "largest number" thing.)
Wow, that's sweet! Didn't know that that was possible (at least not the "limit to x entries" thing)... --Sid 10:46, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
What do the little red exclamation marks mean? GodlessLiberal 19:52, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
First, it means you're a sysop -- that's why you haven't seen them on other wikis (at least, I hadn't before). They mark changes which haven't been 'patrolled'. If you (again, as a sysop) view one of those pages or edits, there will be a link somewhere above the content which will say something like 'mark as patrolled'. If you click that link, the red exclamation mark will go away on future viewings. This feature is intended to allow a group of sysops to coöperatively monitor all the changes on a wiki without needlessly duplicating work. On the recent search page, there's a 'hide patrolled edits' link which will let you see just the un-patrolled ones. All that said, I somehow doubt we're either organized enough nor controlling enough to try to keep all the edits patrolled. --jtltalk 20:15, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
I thought it was something to that effect. Thanks. GodlessLiberal 20:38, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
That sounds really cool. Almost makes me want to be a sysop. ɱɑδ ɱ¡ɳblow in my ear/I did this! 16:28, 27 May 2007 (CDT)

45 Billion

"The largest number is about 45 billion, although mathematicians suspect that there may be even larger numbers" --Kels 15:44, 22 May 2007 (CDT)

I'll see your 45 billion and raise you a nickel ;). Did you know that, every year, MIT (I think) hosts a "big number" competition? The contestants have to work on one blackboard. It can start out easy. I write "1". You write a "1" next to it (11). I write a 10 below and to the left (10^11). You add an exclamation point (10^11 factorial, yikes). It gets very abstract, very fast. Mind boggling. humanbe in 17:56, 22 May 2007 (CDT)
You appear to be correct! And thanks for mentioning it, I didn't know of any such competition before. --Sid 18:06, 22 May 2007 (CDT)
Oh dear God, I just watched that YouTube video. BRILLIANT! XD --Sid 18:22, 22 May 2007 (CDT)
Anyone want to suggest an IRC channel without an obvious name to hash things out? Email me?--PalMD-Talk 21:22, 22 May 2007 (CDT)
Seriously, check out the whole "Look Around You" series. And if you can find it, the periodic table they use for the series is fall-down funny. --Kels 21:27, 22 May 2007 (CDT)
Jiminy Christmas in a padlocked sweatbox! That was absolutely hilarious! :D --AKjeldsen 03:45, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
Yet another triumph for the BBC! This is a spoof of British schools televison programmes. ɱɑδ ɱ¡ɳblow in my ear/I did this! 16:40, 27 May 2007 (CDT)
Is it weird if it turns me on when you spell 'programs' like that? GodlessLiberal 18:59, 27 May 2007 (CDT)
I still hold to UK spelling in this context. I admitted defeat to "programs" in respect of computers several years ago. ɱɑδ ɱ¡ɳblow in my ear/I did this! 15:17, 28 May 2007 (CDT)
Score! Two points for the USA. GodlessLiberal 15:23, 28 May 2007 (CDT)

Would like to propose a general policy on conservative editors...

...they should be welcomed. This site is about debate & challenge on neutral ground. I for one don't think we'd have much of a site if we didn't have people like HeartofGold (thanks again for joining!) willing to engage us. So... before the issue comes up, can we agree on this? -AmesG 00:07, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

Yeah, I agree with Ames that conservative editors should be welcomed so they do not feel discouraged to contribute to the discussions. --Staple? 00:09, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

Hurray! I think that's our major grievance with CP... insult, protect, block, dodge. I for one plan to block & protect as little as physically possible.-AmesG 00:12, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

Agreed, so long as they do not attempt to change the whole perspective of our articles. Make the guideline say something like if you don't agree with the existing content of an article don't delete it, add a properly labeled dissident section. -Icewedge 00:16, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
RationalWiki:Proposed Guidelines friendly poke.
Presumably we have a policy of aiming for neutrality, and not one of deliberate bias like CP?--Bob_M (talk) 04:54, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
It'll be a case of making sure there isn't a situation of ganging up on, insulting, putting down and then blocking any conservative editors. I'd venture that it could be hard getting used to turned tables. Care should be advised initially if and when conservatives appear. Airdish 10:59, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

Request for Schlafly Quotes

I've got something I'm cooking up, but I need the help of someone with a good memory (or at least good archive-diggin' skills). I need a number of Andy's choicest denials of reality, particularly where it comes to CP and how wonderfully it's doing. His ringing endorsements of Conservative would be nice, too. No need to clutter up this page with them, so if someone could start a new page, or drop them in a new section of User:Kels/sandbox, that would rock. I'd do the digging myself, but I need to go out in a few minutes, and I'd like to get started soon after I get back. Also, what would people say is Conservative's second-worst article, after Theory of Evolution? --Kels 07:41, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

Spontaneous guesses: "Young Earth Creationism" (which should be a clone of ToE by now) or "Homosexuality" (even though I think he's not the only author there anymore). There may be worse, though. I haven't watched him closely. --Sid 11:07, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
Hmm...I'm gonna have to check those out to see. YEC is a good candidate, I think. I have a brilliant inspiration (alternatively, a cunning plan, a la Baldric), and I need his two worst. ToE is obviously first, but I'm stumped on #2. --Kels 11:17, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
I would humbly suggest checking his contribs, and looking for something he has written on economics. The articles he creates that don't get fixed tend to be hilariously unclear. You might find one on a "less than arcane" topic. Also, this is hard work, but going through the changes on his talk page and seeing what he says can provide great, um, insight. And some good quotes. Examples: Eh, I'll go to your user page so as not to clutter this one, k? humanbe in 12:11, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
Good idea, although what I'm looking for right now are delusions about how wonderful Conservapedia is and how well it's doing, connected to the PZ Myers project. But I'm sure we could make use of just about anything that trips off his keyboard. --Kels 12:43, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
Back in March, there was something on the frontpage, connected to Alexa. For a day or so, CP had been more popular than Rush Limbaugh's site (and two others). Almost right after the announcement, CP's daily Alexa rank fell like crazy.
Links: Andy's version and slight clarification by me. Click the Alexa link in my version and adjust the Range to "3m" to see the traffic development. --Sid 14:12, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
Say, do you (or anyone) remember a specific point where he crowed about how well the site was growing, maybe with "Praise the Lord" attached or something? Probably on the main page, I'm busy going through his huge talk archives first. --Kels 14:21, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
Check out the edit comments on the Template:AboutC history: things like "updated stats - SURPASSED 9000 ENTRIES!" and "updated stats - very strong growth and 10 MILLION PAGE VIEWS", and lots and lots of mention of "strong growth". Nothing specifically with "Praise the Lord" that I'm seeing, though. --jtltalk 15:52, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
Do you suppose that the 559,440 views of the Ultra Deep Field have been factored into the 11.5 million page view figure? --Huey gunna getcha 15:56, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

(<--) Okay, I went through the archives and got loads of good and amusing stuff, but I'm curious if anyone's got some good quotes of him praising Conservative or the ToE article specifically. I've already gone through Andy's and the Main Page's talk archives, so no need to bother with those areas. --Kels 17:17, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

The only thing I can remember is a bit at the top of Conservative's talk page:
By the way, Theory of Evolution ranks number 3 in our most-visited pages, after the Main Page and Bias in Wikipedia. Well done!--Aschlafly 00:17, 27 February 2007 (EST)
It's also significant that the reason why Conservative was made sysop in the first place was so that he could "implement [his] propositions to The Theory of Evolution page". --AKjeldsen 17:30, 23 May 2007 (CDT)
Okay, I got that one already. Just wondering if anyone knew a few more that they'd seen here and there. Check out User:Kels/Schlaflyisms for the full list of what I extracted. I think I need a shower after wading through that sewer. =P --Kels 17:36, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

While I'm at it, related to this, does anyone know of any other pics of Andy, aside from that godawful one with the Howdy Doody grin? I'll go with what I got if I must, but it would be nice to have something more. --Kels 19:49, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

Andy's "LOL" grin cracks me up every time. XD I think he also uploaded another picture on CP... ah, there it is. And you could make screencaps of YouTube videos. I at least saw one with him... there we go! --Sid 12:15, 24 May 2007 (CDT)

UXB request

I know this is trivial, but would whoever created "Template:User long knives" build it again? With that awesome bloody knife image? My user page misses it. Thanks! humanbe in 12:08, 23 May 2007 (CDT)

Articles

I know this is early days guys, and the there isn't a 90/10 rule, but is anyone actually going to write any articles? I have deliberately decided NOT to apply for SySop, simply because there are already too many chiefs and not enough indians. If this is to be a credible enterprise, some stuff needs writing.--CatWatcher 11:51, 24 May 2007 (CDT)

Well, I did write one article Godwin's Law, does that count?! ; ) I'm trying to get a feel for the sort of articles this wiki needs/wants really. Trashbat 11:59, 24 May 2007 (CDT)

I personally liked that article. I also like the idea of having crank/crackpot ideas to explore here. I remember a huge debate about the Geocentric Theory raging on CP, when RSchlafly locked the page; there are some interesting arguments about that which actually need to be explored - for example, it is entirely possible to "explain" the world in terms of a stationary earth. However, you would have to be really perverse, stupid or pig-headed to actually do it. I started to research a "serious" article for CP about flat earth, based on the Science of Discworld; that is, putting forward all the reasons why it might be true, and as it was CP, tying it into Biblical texts. It was an attempt to stretch the notion of biblical literalism to the extreme and create a reductio ad absurdum. --CatWatcher 12:07, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
I've posted a few...we obviously need more authors and contributions. It may take a little time before hitting the RANDOM button does something useful, so tell everyone you know.--PalMD-Talk 12:12, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
Hey, I've contributed to Reparative Therapy of Homosexuality and started bisexuality. I was thinking of tossing up a stub for gender expression tonight, and maybe start thinking of something for an article on paganism today or tomorrow. And I'm working on that pic for the PZ Myers thing, I haven't forgotten! ==Kels 21:30, 24 May 2007 (CDT)

Holy Crap!

CP has fallen off Alexa! Check the 7-day rankings, even on traffic it's gone. [1]

That's weird, as in, the one month still shows them "on the graph" up to the present. But here's the felling blow that will befall them soon - it won't be long before that peak from the blogs moves into the "3 months ago" position and starts making their "change" stats miserable. But you know what they will do when Alexa no longer serves their egos purposes? Stop looking at it. humanbe in 03:22, 25 May 2007 (CDT)
I predict there will be numerous allegations of Liberal Infiltration directed at Alexa at that point. --AKjeldsen 04:35, 25 May 2007 (CDT)
Apropos of nothing, but isn't that Batman on the left side of the 3m pageviews? --Kels 09:16, 25 May 2007 (CDT)
At first, I thought of it more as a seriously distorted head-and-shoulders stock price pattern, but you're right - it does look more like a Batman pattern. That has got to mean something. --AKjeldsen 18:58, 26 May 2007 (CDT)

What's the deal…

with this? ----Linus(plot evil tech) 08:14, 26 May 2007 (CDT)

According to their FAQ:
Q: Are you guys related to Phyllis Schlafly?

A: Phyllis Schlafly is Tom Schlafly's aunt. She is the widow of Fred Schlafly, Tom's father's brother. She is not involved in the business.
Silly trivia knowledge for the win :P --Sid 11:12, 26 May 2007 (CDT)

Suggestion

When you add something about the batshit craziness you've found, how 'bout we make it standard practice to start an article to refute it? For example, the heliocentrism == atheism thing just went up, so that behooves us to start articles on heliocentrism vs. geocentrism, doesn't it? --Kels 20:28, 26 May 2007 (CDT)

You are absolutely right, bootch. loves to ya. Is that friggin' homework? You're worse than Ed Peur! Time to git 'er done. humanbe in 21:21, 26 May 2007 (CDT)

Who we are and what we do

I've put up a post at the forum that I'd like everyone to have a look at and comment on. It's basically what I see as the best way forward for us, based on our activity so far. I can import it here as an article if people like, but since it's already written there, you might as well just follow the link. --Kels 09:12, 27 May 2007 (CDT)

Since not all of us are on the forum yet, I decided to make an essay version as well. It's over at Essay:A Possible Direction for RationalWiki if you're interested. --Kels 13:17, 27 May 2007 (CDT)

Well, now, that article was created by a number of trustworthy users, including several Sysops. As a Conservapedia member, you must agree with the Divine Inerrancy of Sysops, and thus, if you disagree with the content of the Andrew Schlafly article, you should start separate articles on each to describe why they may be untrustworthy, as per your own fellow Conservapedia Sysop's precedent here. --Kels 15:14, 28 May 2007 (CDT)

"Hot. Science. RationalWiki." should TOTALLY be our new slogan. And it seems that Andy wanted to check if "rationalwiki" is on the spam blacklist, possibly following up on the various censoring actions against the site URL.</theory> --Sid 17:25, 30 May 2007 (CDT)
