My best friend is at a top uni in the UK doing a degree in a non-science but says science degrees are much the same. Do you really not have to go to class? His degree is based entirely on papers. Is yours based on research alone?

I did a combination of learning and research. Indeed, you can't really do the latter without the former as there's a mass of information you need to learn and skills that need to be developed to the point where it's second nature. With most humanities you just need to be able to read English and understand what author X said about subject Y, regurgitate it with some sort of "argument" in your one essay per term and that's about it.
