Sigh

I'm surprized at how sane they are, for anti-abort bills. They actually have "unless she refuses" in the heart beat law, and "if the child will not live, or the life and health of the mother."

Really, 20 weeks is in sane. you cannot know much of anything about the health of your child at 20 weeks. And while unusual, it is not unheard of that a woman (especially a fat woman, a woman in her late 40s where she's skipping periods, or idiot teens who don't think) doesn't know she's preggers till 16-18 weeks, which gives you only 2 weeks to talk to people, decide what you want to do, and find a doctor. Again, it's not common, but this law does not make exceptions for the rare.

That's why most of these will *eventually* be over turned, but LA has written "immediate overturn" proof laws. ie., unlike the ultrasound rules, and the doctor can say what he wants rules, that are overturned as soon as they are passed, these will actually require some time in a court room.

And what I don't get, is what they think they are going to achive by "offering" to hear the heart beat. Every decent doc will say before the whole thing, "you have a right to hear the heart beat, do yo want to?" in a calm setting, like when you are doing paperwork. Non-decent doctors aren't going to convince a women about to have an abortion to listen, anyhow. so who do they think is goign to listen???

You have a right to a lot of things, to not be victim to emotional blackmail by politicians who think you're stupid should be there.

And the way they phrase it, "you have a right to hear the heart beat". As if I wasn't given that, before, and desperatly wanted it. I'm quite sure, if I went into any clinic where they used a tool that could hear a heart beat, if i said (lord knows why I would... but *if*) "may I hear the heart beat", it's not like anyone would say "NO!!! YOU MAY NOT!!! I AM AN ABORTIONIST!!!! I DO NOT LET PEOPLE HEAR HART BEATS!!!"

If people hear them, the flavor is RUINED.

Now we just need a law that makes doctors prefix everything with "the Stat mandates me to tell you the following...". You know, just to be honest about it.
