Trans World Airlines (TWA) Flight 800 was an air accident involving a Boeing 747-131 aircraft
which exploded over the Atlantic. This unfortunate event occurred as a result of a short circut involving a high voltage electrical wire, a low voltage electrical wire heading into the center, a fuel tank sensor probe, vaporized fuel in the tank and a single spark. The official, evidence backed NTSB
report states that a high voltage short wire had jumped onto a low voltage wire that was heading to the fuel tanks. The fuel tanks, heated by the air conditioning packs underneath the center fuel tank, had vaporized some fuel. The high voltage short circuit spark sparked off a fuel probe onto the metal wall of the tank. The spark essentially ignited the fuel and destroyed the jet.
Despite the fact that the investigation was the most costly and largest one of its kind, many refuse the NTSB report. These conspiracy nuts often blame the US Navy or Air Force for firing a missile at the jet. There is of course no evidence to suggest that this was the case.
