Revision as of 01:45, 27 October 2009
E-mail me if you want me. I might check my inbox in the next year.
- I would have emailed you BUT IT'S NOT ENABLED. Anyhow this is what I would have written:
“”Cur, you might not believe this, but I do sympathise. Trouble is you're talking to people who speak a different language: they speak "older". When I was your age I was a major loner: undersized; late to puberty; not pretty; intelligent: all things that alienated me from my peers. Then, however (50+ years ago) there was nowhere that we could talk to adults so I immersed myself in books, I suppose that you are doing the same with the internet.
Unfortunately there are things we learn with time, like how to behave in company; when people are being serious; and how to know when they are joking. As Ace said, one thing you learn is to have multiple external personalities: one for home; one for work or school; & one for when with friends or equals. This isn't deceit: it's called being a rounded person. You really ought to try to find people of a similar age & experience as yourself, there must be somewhere on the net. Don't be a bloody martyr, stick around as CUR. One thing is not to try too hard, don't sock up, just lurk & comment occasionally, very occasionally. We will recognise you, (I've tried to disappear & sock up as a different person :- can't be done: you give yourself away if you've any personality at all & you have) I don't know if you go to school, from what I understand your bro is homeschooled(?), but are you sure there's no-one of a similar age to you who might be able to talk on web or RL? Whether you're male or female, pick a geek of the opposite gender: (the geek thing is to have some common ground [sorry]) (the gender thing is to avoid competition) Have you ever been in a supermarket where there's been a screaming kid? His Mom'll slap him down to shut him up, but she still loves him. We've acted like Mom - we'll forget it soon as long as you don't do it again! XX Terry (Toast) |

Intercom
How were you able to send an intercom message while blocked? -- Nx / talk 22:03, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
- I really don't know. All I know is that under no circumstances should that ability be changed, in case something like that happens again for a longer period and no one notices. --
22:04, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
- Your block must've expired. The intercom only fails when you try to send the message, not when you click write new message. You cannot send intercom messages when blocked or vandal binned, and that's a good thing. We shouldn't block users anyway, so there's no danger of someone accidentally getting locked out. -- Nx / talk 22:08, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
- I see your point, unfortuately, you (notice the pronoun you, as in RationalWiki), do block users. --

- The RIAA’s “parental advisory warning” is a tremendously flawed content labeling system because it is essentially self-regulating. It is a voluntary setup—artists and labels make their own decisions about whether or not content is “explicit”, and this leads to irregularities and lapses—both accidental and intentional—in the system’s safeguards. Some indie labels, particularly ones which possess a liberal conceit and which are inclined to see RIAA labeling as censorship, completely ignore the content labeling system, which means that a lot of indie albums which contain some frightfully explicit stuff are left completely unlabeled. Meanwhile, major-label groups which crave an “edgy” image and the “teen rebel” demographic which comes with it are left free to label their albums as “explicit” even if they contain only mild obscenities or a single explicit song. Because the system contains no gradients or provisions for various amounts/levels of obscenity, all labeled albums, no matter how explicit, are branded with the same sticker of shame, and as a result albums which feature only mild swearing may be denoted by the same label which adorns some of the most profane albums in the universe. Rather than use a system of grades, like, say, the MPAA’s (imperfect, but at least somewhat nuanced) rating system, the geniuses at the RIAA has decreed that albums are either “explicit” or they’re not—and the overall effect of this oversight dilutes the warning’s credibility as a labeling system.
- Moreover, some truly vile content ends up being passed over because it isn’t “explicit”, even though it is objectionable—case in point: “Run For Your Life”, a song from the Beatles’ Rubber Soul in which the narrator warns his girlfriend, in no uncertain terms, that he will kill her if he catches her with another man. If I had a nine-year old daughter, this is notsomething I’d want her to hear on her own—yet, because of the RIAA’s tawdry obsession with “explicit” content, there are thousands of parents who have no idea that a depiction of domestic violence which may potentially be far more damaging than a few stray swear words lies waiting behind the cheerful exterior of another unlabeled, “kid-friendly” Beatles album.
- CUR, it’s all your fault. You are somehow responsible. I am not sure how—perhaps you have been conspiring with Tipper Gore or something. Conspiring...retroactively. Yes. This must be it. The electrocutioner 06:31, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
