Abuse filter request

Just in case some other Tech doesn't see it first: RationalWiki:Technical support#Abuse filter: images.

ZooGuard (talk)16:47, 10 April 2012

You voted against the ban of someone who engaged in a large vandalism campaign. Why?

AceModerator03:43, 10 April 2012

I do not believe he is responsible for what he confessed to doing. Even if he is, (and I can't believe I'm doing this) I agree with Nutty Roux: "A ban isn't going to stop anyone from doing this again and all anyone he has to do is unplug/replug his modem and come back under a different username. Expressing outrage and letting a user sit with being rightfully shunned or whatever happens seems like a better outcome than a ban, which is still novel and bound to be provocative to someone already inclined to this manner of disruptive conduct."

Picon small.pngAcer Blue04:16, 10 April 2012

So shunning someone would stop the vandalism? And everyone would abide by said shunning? Sounds like less of a good idea than a ban.

AceModerator04:25, 10 April 2012

A ban certainly won't do any good. There are subtler ways of stopping vandalism than a banhammer, i.e. AbuseFilter. We don't need to martyr UHM like we did MarcusCicero, only to have to deal with his bullshit for months after our "ban."

Picon small.pngAcer Blue04:34, 10 April 2012

I suspect we would have had to deal with Marcus's bullshit in any event, and the banning carried the added advantage that he could be burned and blocked on sight when he showed up, which nipped at least some controversy in the bud.

Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX04:36, 10 April 2012

And then we raise the specture of having a whole bunch of "supporters" and sock accounts who protest the shunning and bullying on every page. Write essays about it etc. Sounds pretty pointless.

AceModerator04:36, 10 April 2012

As to the efficacy of shunning vs. banning here on the Wiki, I would direct you to Template:MC, which AD and others pulled out whenever MarcusCicero misbehaved. The reader must decide whether this was effective or not.

Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX04:34, 10 April 2012

I didn't suggest a permaban. I opened the discussion, not the vote.

AceModerator05:32, 9 April 2012

I opended the actual vote since nobody else had yet; and ty was the one who clarified it to a permaban.

Please intervene

Several users have ganged up to constantly block me. It has gotten to the point where it is incredibly frustrating. Right now, my IP is blocked because of ArchieGoodwin and I'm having to rely on Tor. I can't unblock it because P-Foster removed my rights. Even before my block rights were removed, unblocking myself was futile since as soon as I did so, I would be blocked again. I'm sick of it. Don't ask me to roll with the punches. This has gone too far. Please intervene.

A Song of Ice and Fire

I remember a while ago you mentioned you were making your way through A Song of Ice and Fire. Did you make it yet? If so, what are your thoughts?

Cow...Hammertime!19:09, 8 March 2012

I'm halfway through A Feast for Crows at the moment, and it's heating up. I shouldn't make many comments because my perceptions are likely to change very quickly as the story progresses. I can say that I'm very impressed with Daenerys as a character, and cannot for the life of me get interested in Brienne's storyline.

Picon small.pngAcer Blue03:53, 9 March 2012

You're not alone with the Brienne thing. I didn't mind it, but compared to the rest of the series, her sections were pretty dry. Feast in general is pretty slow, though things pick up towards the end. If you start looking at reviews online, I think a lot of the frustration with the book comes from the fact that people had to wait 7 years for Dance to come out. I only had to wait a year or so, so my opinion isn't as negative. It's definitely the worst of the 5 so far, but that's not to say it's actually bad; just not up to the standards set by the previous ones.

Dance starts out in the first half in the same vein as Feast, but really kicks into gear about halfway through. I don't know how much you're aware of the structure, but the first half takes place during the events of Feast, then they merge and crazy shit really starts happening.

*Book 3 spoilers for anyone else reading this*

What did you think of the Red Wedding? I really can't wait to see the shitstorm the Internet is going to explode into when that happens in the TV series, especially since they're giving Robb a bigger role than he had in the books.

Cow...Hammertime!14:50, 9 March 2012

MDB and I were chatting about this the other day. It feels like Brienne was tacked onto the story to flesh it out. He'd written too much for 1 book, but not enough for 2, so needed padding. Same thing with the Greyjoys' drama. It doesn't feel like a part of the greater scheme of things. Dany is a great character, as are Tyrion and Arya. I still the final showdown will be between Dany and Arya.

PsyGremlin말하십시오15:02, 9 March 2012

Actually, I've had the thought that the final conflict will be between Sansa and Dany. Sansa is the one who always wanted to be royalty; my idea is that she'll grow into accepting what it really means to rule (i.e. "it's not all being the beautiful princess to a brave knight") and that Arya will be her little assassin and spy.

MDB (talk)15:13, 9 March 2012

One other thought I've had... I desperately hope Cersei lives long enough to see that she's wrong about dragons being extinct, if anything so we can see her face on the TV as dragons burn Lannisport and/or King's Landing to the ground.

MDB (talk)15:24, 9 March 2012

"too much for 1 book, but not enough for 2"

So much for the adage that a story is exactly as long as it needs to be!

Scarlet A.pngd hominem15:14, 9 March 2012

Urgh! No! Sansa needs to go the way of Robb, she's just a big wilting violet. Unless Baelish manages to do something with her. However, if that involves chucking her through the Moon hole (or whatever it's called), I'll cheer.

Hey, you know that thing where argumentative people visit you at Christmas/New Year?

I'm doing that right now. Yeah yeah yeah!.

And I'm only nine days late. Nine days? Nine days is nothing. I've slept for longer than that. Recently.

I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I hate holiday music. That was quite disappointing.

Thanks for visiting my humble talk page! You're welcome anytime. As always, free bacon.

Picon small.pngAcer Blue06:29, 3 January 2012

I am similarly disappointed in that I love you and your humble talk page but I hate bacon.

Also, I'm kinda ill right now. I'm not going to eat anything for a while. I hope you're not ill. Being ill is not the best.

And I got you some better yeahs. Yeah yeah yeah yeah!

Yes, we've been over this baconphobia of yours. But I would agree not to eat, at the very least, bacon, while ill. Unless it's one of those illnesses where you should eat more.

You have quite an varied musical taste. Got any other suggestions?

Last edit: 08:02, 14 February 2012

Despite all evidence to the contrary (and believe me, there is more every day), I am actually alive! And I have the ability to talk to people!

On your advice (OK, not really advice, but I chose to take it as advice for some reason), I listened to some of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and it's actually very nice. It reminds me of this, which is a thing I like.

I tried to think of something really amazing to suggest, ignoring the obvious fact that I cannot do anything, but I couldn't think of anything I like which seemed like anyone else would like it (this is probably related to the fact that I cannot do anything). So now I'm just linking you to the last couple of songs I have been obsessed with.

Yeah yeah. Yeah yeah yeah yeah.

Also, apparently there was some kind of accident with Time, since you're in January and I'm all the way over here in February. We apologise for the inconvenience.

New3.pngPink(Is a perfectly acceptable colour)06:18, 14 February 2012

Oh, Pink, I am far more grossly inadequate in such conversation as this. You see? I can't even grammar right. WaitingforGodot thought I was a non-native English speaker. And there was that emaily thing at which I completely failed. Heavens truly to Betsy, Pink. Heavens to Betsy.

On account of me being in an inappropriate situation to play music, especially the good music you share, I must wait to respond in kind. But make no mistake: expect it.

We need a cat for source texts. not "namespace candidates", but actually something descriptive. I'm not sure "source" is the best word, though I like your (or whoever's) idea about "reference".

What I'm not sure is what types of references we have, that we can make useful cats for.

Any ideas?

Pink mowse.pngGodotGrow a vagina21:28, 23 January 2012

All of the pages in the source namespace candidates category are what you might call "reference" pages. Simply changing the cat's name to "source documents" would do the trick for now, though I remain entirely skeptical that "source texts" belong in mainspace at all.

Picon small.pngAcer Blue21:30, 23 January 2012

Well, until they have a home, grins, we need to cat them. :-) I do like your term "reference pages" better than "source texts.

Picon small.pngAcer Blue04:50, 6 February 2012

Picon small.pngAcer Blue21:52, 22 January 2012

My favourite lyrical interpretation is still this one. It's kind of an in-joke with some people I know now. You just need to shout "I AM ON A BUS!" and they know when to join in.

Scarlet A.pngsshole11:24, 23 January 2012

Love those; and your friends seem like the greatest people imaginable, so congratulations. (Then again, I boast a friend who said the following to me today: "I used to be a king of England, but I took an arrow to the eye.")

Picon small.pngAcer Blue19:36, 23 January 2012

In what context can "I used to be a king of England, but I took an arrow to the eye" possibly make any sense?

Though I forgot to add that in the Queen of the Night video above, I'm most amused by the "poke around my bondage gear" line, as in the production I worked on the Queen was re-imagined as a high class madam/dominatrix (albeit quite subtly). It's a shame we didn't do it more recently because I would have demanded we added the line "I know Sarastro, well, I know what he likes".

Scarlet A.pngpathetic13:15, 25 January 2012

Meme. Reference.

As far as "re-imaginings" go, that sounds interesting. And you must live in a magical place where a lot of people around are Sherlockians... sigh...

Picon small.pngAcer Blue18:04, 25 January 2012

Also, elitist, or right? I dare say I agree with him a lot. It's an art form that's very demanding and, frankly, most of the over-glorified pop singers making it as "classical" artists simply aren't up to the standard in either quality or endurance.

Though that's not just restricted to opera, out of all of Lloyd-Webber's televised audition shows over the last few years, most of the eventual winners drop out of the productions after a matter of weeks due to exhaustion. I suppose when it's controlled, televised and scrubbed up like Glee it masks how fucking difficult it really is, so no wonder people go in with certain breezy expectations and end up nearly dead.

Scarlet A.pngbomination06:08, 31 January 2012

Me, I prefer choral works, where no singer is singled out to carry the weight of the entire performance.

Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX06:22, 31 January 2012

It's the same kind of thing that makes people like me snerk condescendingly when someone says they "love" jazz and drool over Jamie Cullum. The worst is when they conflate it with "easy listening" -- makes me want to shove Peter Brotzmann records down their throat. But then again, I freely admit that I am such a fucking snob.

Nebuchadnezzar (talk)06:29, 31 January 2012

I don't think I'm much of a genre snob in that respect, metal arguments basically killed off that as a useful concept for me. But when anyone puts a jumped up kareoke singer in the same category as Kiri Te Kanawa, I'll take issue with it.

Scarlet A.pngpostate06:41, 31 January 2012

It's not about genre snobbery, but to paraphrase you, putting Jamie Cullum in the same category as Duke fucking Ellington.

when I'm sober, would you mind sharing with me how one actually does a real "mod block" and unblock. (I think it's a rights issue, but i'm way too not-sober to get it!0

Pink mowse.pngGodotGrow a vagina04:19, 29 January 2012

Sure. The short answer is that there's no such thing as a "mod block." A block is the same whether it comes from a mod or not. (Longer answer: it's the sysop bit that gives you block power. For instance, if you had a mod bit but no sysop bit, you couldn't actually issue blocks or unblocks. More info can be found at Special:UserGroupRights.

Mods can give and remove the sysoprevoke bit, which prevents the user from exercising any sysop powers.)

Picon small.pngAcer Blue04:22, 29 January 2012

Go to special:preferences, go to gadgets and click the mod checkboxes. That'll give you an easy link to user rights in the toolbox when in their userspace.

P-Foster17:18, 8 January 2012

I kinda don't get this. I get you all don't like Human. I have issues myself. But making up rules, or breaking them is not a way to handle something that has not yet even been an issue. So why wasn't Conservaleaks hosted on RW?

-- Nx / talk17:20, 8 January 2012

We link to it dozens of times and were generally waiting for the next installment with throbbing hard-ons; the question of where it's hosted is academic. We use them all over the place. And real identities are not redacted from them.

P-Foster17:22, 8 January 2012

Exactly, but it's not hosted on RW because we have a rule against it. But we still want to see it, so hosting it externally is a convenient way to get around that.
