B) The poppy thing is a tricky one. The main reason why its so controversial in Ireland is because during the Troubles the Ulster Presbyterian community (Who lost many thousands at the battle of the Somme and a whole regiment of Ulstermen were wiped out in Thiepval Wood) used it to castigate and generally irritate the Catholic minority. It was part of the jingoistic culture (Along with the annual 12th July parades which deliberately marched through Catholic areas in order to provoke) and naturally, irish Catholics thought of it as yet another symbol of their oppression. It has deeper roots in the south as well; following the War of Independenance it was the standard Republican dogma that those Irishmen who died in WWI (c. 30,000 souls) did so at the behest of 'British Imperialism' and died, by definition, fighting for their natural enemies. So the two thousand or so Republicans who died in the 5 years between 1916-1921 were automatically elevated to the realm of national salvation and the 30,000 Irish Nationalists who died in the years 1914-1918 were written off as national traitors. Recent historiography has thankfully reversed this standard Republican dogma and in recent years Irish people have begun to celebrate their ancestors who died in a hopeless and terrible war which very few fought for ideological reasons. The poppy isn't widely worn because of its toxic association with Northern Presbyterian bigotry, but overall the majority of Irish people regard the loss of Irish life in WWI with an intense and genuine sadness. :I would've thought something along those lines too, the loss of life in the Great War was at the hands of the government and not so ideological, at least not as much as the Second World War where most people were genuinely disgusted with Nazism (the obvious exceptions being Mosley and Henry Ford). I don't even remember being taught in school the causes of WWI at an adult level. They kind of glossed over it, mentioned Franz Ferdinand and that was pretty much it. On the other hand the rise of Hitler is so well known because the Holocaust is understandably one of the worst crimes against humanity ever committed. In both wars British men were basically given a choice of join the Army or get imprisoned for draft-dodging, which is no choice at all. Such a shame that the poppy's seen by some as a symbol of British Imperialism instead of a commemorative symbol. {{User:SuperJosh/Sig|}} 16:11, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

::I'm not too keen on poppy fascism anyway to be honest. Public historical commemmorations are mostly tacky and annoying. That famous song (''And the Band Played Waltzing Mathilda'') tells the story of an Australian soldier in Gallipolli who is gazing in dismay at all the veterans marching to commemmorate that horrible event. Commemmoration more often than not becomes a vehicle for propaganda. I suppose the point is that the First World War was an eminently preventable conflict and to commemmorate the huge body count every year does an insult to all those young men who died so pointlessly. Thats the point that song makes, at any rate. [[Special:Contributions/86.47.74.195|86.47.74.195]] ([[User talk:86.47.74.195|talk]]) 16:23, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

I found the UK version of White Riot yesterday which is about 100 times better than the American release. SJ Debaser 16:53, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

100'000?

Hey, I just noticed you saying "though the £100'000 fee" on T:WIGO, and I feel the need to ask if the apostrophe is some sort of alternate convention for denoting thousands that I'm unaware of. I mostly ask because I recently reverted somebody's edit on WP that replaced a regular comma with an apostrophe in a number since I felt that this was incorrect. Now that I see it popping up again, I'm getting some doubts. Is this maybe a regional thing? Or am I just lacking common knowledge? (Knowing myself, this is sadly quite possible... =P) --Sid (talk) 22:00, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

As far as I'm aware in the UK either 100000, 100,000, 100'000 are acceptable. I've always used an apostrophe. Having said that, I loathe mathematics and the last time I sat a maths exam I was 15. SJ Debaser 01:43, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
I think it's adorable when Brits call math "maths." P-Foster (talk) 01:56, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
We are the cutest, definitely the most harmless nation on this earth. There's a bit in Peep Show (British TV cult comedy shot in POV) where one character says to the other "you do the math," to which the other replies by adding "sssss" on the end of it. SJ Debaser 11:02, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
Ahhhh, that explains it, thanks! --Sid (talk) 12:59, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

My phone's about six years old. I can't stand smart phones. I told my friend this who has a smart phone and he kept asking why and I told him it was because smart phones turn people who own them into people who ask other people who don't have smart phones why they don't have a smart phone and then tell us we should get smart phones. At any rate, I've got coursework now so wouldn't be using it that much. SJ Debaser 12:28, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
There's a java client for older phones. I used to use it on my crappy 3 SkypePhone. Ah go on, ya know you want to. It's free for the basic missions etc. Bugger coursework, who needs a degree anyway? CrundyTalk nerdy to me 12:30, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

Tongues

It's impossible to literally swallow your tongue, but it's often used as a badly worded description of it rolling back and blocking your airway. It's reasonably common in unconscious people who lose muscle tone, which is why first aid concentrates on opening the airway as a first priority (See the Wikipedia article on airway management.). Although I can't find a decent cite for it regarding waterboarding, whoever claimed it was probably thinking that. Pouring water onto your head like that could force it down, but unless you were knocked unconscious by it you'd have enough muscle strength to put it back in the right position pretty quick. Scarlet A.pngpathetic 13:57, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Righto. I know nothing about first aid, I just saw that on QI, and Stephen Fry knows all. At any rate, if a source can't be found to support a symptom we list it then it shouldn't be there. SJ Debaser 14:03, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
QI gets it wrong occasionally. Although it is a misconception, people do imagine it being literally flipped back and down the throat, rather than just relaxing backwards. If you try and force the back of your tongue into your throat you can just about block your own airway. Scarlet A.pngpathetic 14:25, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
God, I hate people who take QI as the sole arbiter of truth. There was a guy I knew who thought himself a genius for uncritically lapping up everything Fry says, and it was unspeakably obnoxious. MARCVS ANTONIVS 14:30, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
As a note, I once knew a girl, who due to a genetic deformity, would literally swallow her tongue. There was something about it not being properly connected to the bottom of her throat, so if she wasn't paying attention, it would flop back in her mouth, and she'd swallow it. It was weird as shit, to just be talking to her, and suddenly she starts gasping for breath, and someone has to come pull her tongue out of her throat. (She was one of my friends older sisters, so whenever I saw her, family was around, I always asked what she did if she was like.. not at home. Never got an answer) But yeah. So even at best "It's not possible for a NORMAL human to swallow their own tongue" and then all of the "it's not literal" things. Quaruuniversity - You can't explain that! 14:37, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
Now there's an argument against intelligent design... Scarlet A.pngpathetic 15:48, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
I don't take QI as the sole arbiter of truth. That's literally the only thing I remember ever seeing on it. My housemates watch it and it looks boring. Although Stephen Fry remains awesome. SJ Debaser 17:32, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
It's quite good, actually and I'd recommend it just for learning random shite. IIRC the early series were a bit more serious but now they're pushing the comedy factor a little more. It's as factual as you can expect it to be, and they usually correct any errors on DVD releases (wp:3753 Cruithne for instance). But if you're not also checking what it says you just fail as a skeptic. Scarlet A.pngpathetic 17:37, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Speaking of which, since Nutty doesn't want it in return for sending me some drugs, how do you fancy trying out a disposable eCigarette? I got two with some free credit I was given from a vendor because I helped them fix a problem with their SSL certificate, and I'm saving one for my friend at work, so you can have the other if you fancy giving it a go? CrundyTalk nerdy to me 16:02, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

That's very kind of you, but I'm OK for it thanks. I'm completely avoiding anything that reminds me of smoking at the moment, especially with approaching coursework deadlines in the coming month. I have a strong feeling they'd tempt me back onto ciggies. How're the drugs working out which Crundy sent you? SJ Debaser 16:32, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
You mean that nutty sent me (sounds like you've been on some drugs)? Haven't used it yet, because (1) my hospital tank hasn't cycled and is chock full of ammonia, so I doubt I can use it anyway, (2) it's probably too small to handle the bioload from my yellow tang, and (3) I can't catch the little fuckers. Seriously they're really fucking fast! I'm gonna leave them and hope the whitespot doesn't reinfect my remaining two fish when it eventually does hatch. Heh, also I bought a couple of cleaner shrimp to replace the two OAP ones that died, and the tang won't leave them alone. She wants to be cleaned 24/7 and the shrimp have got fed up with it and are hiding in a cave. CrundyTalk nerdy to me 16:36, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

I don't see how that edit constitutes vandalism. Don't labour under the delusion I like you. Your adamance in remaining at this website for the sole purpose of trying to cause as much trouble as possible is a testament to how you must have nothing better to do with your time. Your personal attacks are also frequently unprompted and foul - in defending this thread from reversion you called PsyGremlin a racist because he's a white South African, and in a civilised conversation on your talkpage you said you had sex with my mother, which I still think is probably a lie. As for grandiose claims of radical leadership on a relatively minor snark-science wiki... well, if you think that's impressive, then good for you.

I have always admired you as a man of unfailing integrity and decency. Although I have previously approached you covertly via email, I believe the time is ripe to cease such Machiavellian plots and operate in the open. As you know, the Rationalwiki Liberty Confederation grows in strength every day. We are committed to the destruction of the moderator institution (Whose net result has been an equal level of HCM, more petty personal rivalries, the rise of an observably egocentric oligarchy, and mass censorship of any criticism of the power structure - just note how this personal message will be immediately reverted, if you're looking for proof) We will restore the ancient mobocracy for which our descendants fought for so valiantly. We need your sword, your dedication, and your strong ethos of liberty. Will you join us? 86.40.84.124 (talk) 13:11, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

No. SJ Debaser 13:13, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
Why? 86.40.84.124 (talk) 13:17, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
I come on RationalWiki to shoot the shit, though originally because I hated CP. CP being all but dead now means that I exist here to shoot the shit and occasionally make one or two pointless edits to articles no one cares here cares about, though it amuses me. I've pretty much steered clear of community standards arguments the whole time I've been here because they are incredibly fucking boring. The last thing I want to do here is campaign for something which I don't really care about. In short, I don't give a fuck about site politics.
As an aside, you've never emailed me asking me to join you, Darth Vader. Also I think you mean ancestors, not descendants.
Also also, what's your view on the Poppy? Irish aren't you? I proudly wear it and don't see any connection to sectarianism. Indeed, half my family is Irish Catholic. SJ Debaser 13:46, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

A) I loathe site politics too. Which is why I believe the present strucutre; the creation of a site hierarchy who hold absolute powers over your inherent right to free expression - is a fundamental evil. Apathy paves the road for tyranny. Though it goes against both of our instincts, sometimes good men have to take a stand against oppression.

86.45.238.109 (talk) 14:12, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

I would've thought something along those lines too, the loss of life in the Great War was at the hands of the government and not so ideological, at least not as much as the Second World War where most people were genuinely disgusted with Nazism (the obvious exceptions being Mosley and Henry Ford). SJ Debaser 16:11, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
I'm not too keen on poppy fascism anyway to be honest. Public historical commemmorations are mostly tacky and annoying. That famous song (And the Band Played Waltzing Mathilda) tells the story of an Australian soldier in Gallipolli who is gazing in dismay at all the veterans marching to commemmorate that horrible event. Commemmoration more often than not becomes a vehicle for propaganda. I suppose the point is that the First World War was an eminently preventable conflict and to commemmorate the huge body count every year does an insult to all those young men who died so pointlessly. Thats the point that song makes, at any rate. 86.47.74.195 (talk) 16:23, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
