- I am a "big" picture thinking person ya know? Things like punctuation, grammar, spelling....these are not things I am fully engaged in! I spent 6 months in my freshman year of highschool trying to find out who could eliminate the apostrophe from the English language. I finally decided that it was the editor of the MLA style guide book, since that is whats the majority of schools use. So I started a petition and got almost 200 hundred signatures for the elimination of the apostrophe from the MLA style book. I sent it in....and received a lovely form letter back telling me the appreaciated my input and would consider it for future editions. It never happened...bastards. 24.141.169.255 15:23, 16 July 2007 (CDT)

Neh!
But "Ender's Game" is crap. Keepìì it to yourself íí 08:52, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
- Sacrilege! ThunderkatzHo! 09:29, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
Sorry- the subject's not up for discussion : compared with the good oldies (Heinlein, Pohl, Pornelle, Clarke, Azimov, Bradbury, Simac, Van Vogt etc etc etc) and the superb newbies(Iain M Banks, William Gibson, Richard Morgan, Alastair Reynolds, me etc etc etc), the whole series is crap. Admittedly I've only read the 1st two but that was out of a sense of duty -not 'cause I enjoyed them. The word that springs to mind is "immature". Keepìì it to yourself íí 11:20, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
- Maybe to "old fogies" like you, but to young people, the series was incredible. Ender's Game wasn't written for adults. And once you get to Speaker For the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind, it only gets better. Granted, no one's going to look back and say "What an incredible author," but they're still good books, especially for teens. ThunderkatzHo! 11:36, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
- p.s. Thanks for even more authors whose books I have to read now. And how could you forget Lovecraft? Or Phillip K. Dick? Or L. Ron Hubbard :)
Point taken, I am a certifiable antique - sorry for trampling on your flowers. Re other authors - didn't forget - there's just too many to mention (not a Lovecraft fan).Horselover Fat - yes of course (look it up if you don't get the ref). LRon? - neargh! I could go on for ever. Unfortunately I lost several thousand books about 25 years ago and another several hundred in the great flood (couldn't get 'em on the ark) - Some 1st editions & some signed 1sts. I also had a zillion old SF pulp mags - astounding (analog) & others. "Altogether now: Those were the days my friend ...". I've got about 40 copies of a book (that's about 1/2 the print run!) by an author whose name modesty prevents me from revealing that have been well soaked in flood water. Recommended reading
Authors I have enjoyed and am still enjoying
Oldies
- Robert Heinlein
- Fred Pohl & (?) Kornbluth
- Gerry Pournelle
- Arthur C. Clarke
- Isaac Azimov
- Ray Bradbury
- Clifford Simac
- A E. Van Vogt
- Larry Niven - anything
- Roger Zelazny - especially the 'Amber' series
- Kurt Vonnegut - sirens
- Eric Frank Russell - with a sense of humour
- Cordwainer Smith - weird universe
- Phillip K Dick - genius?
- Jack Vance - Amusng
- Samuel Delaney - subversive
Newbies (Not so new now)
- Iain M Banks - triffic (also, without the 'M' good straight fiction)
- Wiliam Gibson cyberstuff
- Richard Morgan
- Alastair Reynolds
- Neal Asher
- above 3 very similar if you like enders game you should like 'em.
- Hugh Cook - One of the few fantasy series that work but he's stopped now.
- Whatsisname - 'cryptonomicon' author (other books not as good - and thinking about it, it's not SF)
- Neil Gaiman? I think. He's similiar to Terry Pratchett and Dave Mckean, though they're both more fantasy than SF. You might like Terry Pratchett. Assuming you can expand to fantasy. None of his Discworld books take themselves seriously. ThunderkatzHo! 13:14, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
David Brin humanbe in 13:27, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
So so - take him or leave him - sundiver series not bad. Keepìì it to yourself íí 13:32, 14 August 2007 (CDT)

That's just off the top of my head - there's a zillion more I should have mentioned. Keepìì it to yourself íí 13:10, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
Neil Gamain's good - not cryptowhatsit - he does graphic novels mainly, I think.
Terry p - got 'em all. Thats 3 of the signed hardback 1st edits I've lately lost - boo hoo. Keepìì it to yourself íí 13:24, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
- Right, I just checked, and it's Neil Stephenson. My bad. ThunderkatzHo! 13:28, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
