Women are bitches, according to this insightful political cartoon
Literally, they're bitches.
And remember: liberals are the real misogynists and racists!
i mean. seriously. What does it take to think something like this? law after law after law being proposed (and in some cases, passed) by these idiots who "love women", and they can write this? how self hating are they, or am i missing something?
Don't you know? Every breath taken by a women uses up an oxygen molecule that could've been used by a man. We shouldn't have to subsidize those sluts' gaseous promiscuity!
And no one is asking you to subsidize anything. they are saying that if you offer any medicine at all, then you must include birth control. why is that so fucking offensive to these people.
of course if you'd rather subsidize a young woman's baby - cause she couldn't afford the birth control, I guess you can do that!
Synopsis for me, because I can't see the image?
typical "black monkey image" of Obama, with 4 dogs at his feet labled, "clinton" "dowd" "fluke" and "wasterman-schultz". the dogs are barking "republicans hate men" "tea-party = taliban", "war on women".
It shows a crude drawing of Barack Obama, with a clipboard reading "FREE! US GOV medical care, homes, cars, birth control, trains" (yes, trains), holding the leashes to 4 dogs representing Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Hillary Clinton, Maureen Dowd, and Sandra Fluke (the last of whom is depicted licking her own genitals). The "dogs" (bitches?) are yipping various lines about how conservatives/the Tea Party/Republicans hate women. The itself image is titled "Good Democratic Bitches" (a play on a TV show called "Good Christian Bitches").
I think the cartoon's point is that, in exchange for free, government-subsidized trains, women agree to hate Republicans.
Is that from the good ol' wingnut e-mail forward folder? I haven't gotten a good one of those in a while.
I found the cartoon via a link from Lawyers, Guns, and Money, a blog I highly recommend following yourself.
Ah, when it comes to the lefty blagoblag, I'm more of a Balloon Juice guy myself. (Though their new layout is fucking awful, I don't know why they changed it. But everyone needs to know the BJ lexicon.)
Al Jazeera on women's rights and Obama
Seen this? And what's your take on what Obama has or hasn't done?
Godot appears to have gone missing this last weekend. Along with Goonie. I assume they're having a whirlwind affair with each other.
Ditto Sethpeck, it seems.
Oh my god, i *love* al jezira. Repuks and dems are fighting over the women, and the dems are using the First Lady cause Obmam isn't popular? hahahahahahahh.
Unless you are still holding resentment that obama beat the first woman in history to run for president, I'm not too worried. I mean, i don't get the uber left's meme that he's not done anything. He's been as effective if not more effective than any other Dem or Repuke in a while. Then again, i didn't expect him to walk in and may 10,000 years give or take of anti-women views go out the door.
Nor would Clinton. Though I think she'd be far less willing to listen to the republicans today.
I'm having a well deserved affair with my husband, thank you. ;-)
Christian fundamentalism
The source [1] includes, "An expectation of the Second Coming, or physical return, of Jesus Christ to initiate his thousand-year rule of the Earth, which came to be known as the Millennium." as part of the 5 principles of Christian fundamentalism so I included it in the article, Fundamentalist Christianity, you took it out. Is the source OK?

[1]
Millennialism is a specific thing, and I get that a lot of people don't understand that, including most Christians. But what really they are talking about is "last judgment" or "second coming" or something. Even though some people on some sites use inaccurate terms, we should be precise. And it's never the "millennium" by the way. That just means the 1000 years.
By the way, part of the shift in terms is necessary for Fundies, cause the millennium, and a second one, have come and gone. Unless (and god help is 2033ish) they claim it's on the 2000 anniversary of DEATH. i can see it now... even bigger than Y2K. "Jesus is coming... 2000 years have passed since he rose. give your souls to god before it's too late". it might make 2012 look down right tame. ;-)
I'm still pissed about that Y2K thing. I spent two years living in a bomb shelter with my mid-80s diesel Mercedes-Benz and nothing happened.
I was working part time at a tech firm, to make post-graduate ends meet (teaching gigs don't pay much if you aren't full time). Man was it a huge worry. they must have spent a year and millions of bucks preparing for all the chaos. Even down to putting loud alarms in the elevators that were manual, in case the electronics fucked up.
Dooonesbury
I assume you're following this week's strips
Yup. havn't seen today's yet.
Is Donesbury some new comic strip, then?
No, it started in teh 80's i think. But this week he's doing an entire week an a girl going into a texas abortion clinic. it's pretty harsh criticism of the whole "you need counseling, ultrasound and a waiting period" crap that defines the right wing approach to abortion control.
Doonesbury's been around for forty years at this point, but it's still cutting-edge and amazing.
The cartoons this week are both incisive and goddamn hilarious.
Speeling was never my (or WfG's) strongest point
what is the opposite of "strongest suit"; weakest PJ's? :-)
i know, i know, different kind of suit.
if it were not for the red squiggles, i'd not spell anything right.
Good luck. i've had no internet all day, so by the time i read this, you were there. but let us know how you felt when you're done!
Don't remember exact score due to poor memory of the middle digit. Now I have to wait 10 to 15 days Q_Q
Did you feel good, though? and how did you get your score right away?
The verbal/quantitative scores are instantly given, as they are taken on the computer. Unfortunately, I forgot whether the middle digit was in tests scored 120-170, except it was the same for both. I want to say it was a six, but my perpetual second guessing caused me to doubt it after I walked home. This means I have to wait 10-15 days until the full test with writing is graded to be able to see the results :<
The course
Behold: "Honors 2000 -- Critical Thinking:Human and societal responses to disasters and disaster relief throughout history"
Yep, classic example of a BS degree.
Only Grade: Our submit-by-email final essay.
Pros: Introduced me to Jared Diamond
Cons: Most inane idiotic bullshit I have ever had in a course, made me do team building exercises.
hehe. team building. heheh
Team building exercises? I'm taking small business management next term; I am not looking forward to the inevitable "team up so you can pretend to be a small business!" activities.
Ew. Group projects. Evil. Evil. Vile things. I usually end up doing all the work...mostly because...the people I'm grouped with are lazy fucks, or...I'm really picky on how I want things done. And if it doesn't end up the way I like, I kinda...do the whole thing by myself, and send the menial tasks to the rest of the group.
I can only hope you saw fit to say a few "fuck yous" in your own thesis
After he had obtained the signature page from his committee, Plaintiff inserted an additional, two-page section into his thesis without the knowledge or consent of his committee members. That section, entitled "Disacknowledgements," began: "I would like to offer special Fuck You's to the following degenerates for of being an ever-present hindrance during my graduate career...." It then identified the Dean and staff of the UCSB graduate school, the managers of Davidson Library, former California Governor Wilson, the Regents of the University of California, and "Science" as having been particularly obstructive to Plaintiff's progress toward his graduate degree. Plaintiff later explained that he had not revealed the section to the members of his committee because he feared that they would not approve it.
I was flicking through one of the several softbound thesis copies I have floating around the office, and discovered that the last chapter was on curry recipes... not quite as good as slipping in a good "fuck you", but I know the feeling.
No, see I needed a job, and didn't want to leave the state yet, so that meant lots of small term/short term local teaching gigs. which meant lots of people would say "Oh, you know Sam, i'll give him a ring". Saying "Sam Gill is an arrogant ass", while true, wouldn't have landed me in very nice water. So i said all teh right "assisted me in framing my initial ideas into an actual thesis", "aided me with access to DC archive, which were invaluable to..."
Crank linguistics
"And one of the most important sub-fields of non-mainstream (‘fringe’) linguistic thought is ‘fringe’ historical linguistics: non-mainstream claims and theories about these very matters."
I'm already lost. maybe I need food. :-)
Why do we not call it "linguology" again?
"Many of the writers in question here have never studied linguistics, and some apparently do not know that the subject exists"
isn't that the best quote describing self proclaimed "experts" in every field when real experts go "what the fuck are you writing about???"
Onion time!
Am I the only one who finds The Onion's latest video more depressing than funny? Talking about the Catholic Church's opposition to contraception and a bullied gay kid is just hard to make funny after a while.
no, you're not. it's pretty much just pathetic.
Satire doesn't need to be funny, though. While I don't think The Onion is the best example of it, Bremner, Bird and Fortune tends to look like it's building up to a great punchline before going really dark. The gay 12 year-old thing isn't so much trying to be funny as it is holding up a mirror to the world and saying "hey world, you're fuck ugly".
I feel kind of bad for linking that one now. Here, have an Onion video that's less depressing.
Was walking downtown...
Where is this paradise?
I'm sure the citizens of heaven scoff also. You do seem to have good food there, anyway.
YMMMMM chocolate.
my chocolate shop i'll never open, will be called xotohotal.
Atilla the hun chair
As a former reader/listener of Rush, one of the odder things was his repeated claim to be the "Attila the Hun Chair of the Institute of Advanced Conservative Studies" However, he sometimes refereed to it as an actual chair in which he was sitting.
you are
Either "Uh oh" or "I do try". depending on how favorite is taken. ;-)
Except me! >:(
ohh... How do I make you love me? ;-)
Larry Summers eats his heart out
A new mult-national study published last month once again debunks the "math makes ladybrains explode" hypothesis. (Also, obligatory xkcd.)
Good luck
Thanks. I doubt I'll make it, but if i can even "sorta make it", every bit it better for me. 2 years is not what I want. but 6 more months, whould be 15 more lbs.
Cognitive science meets religion
New journal of cog sci and religion launched. Editorial board looks good -- not that I'm biased because I largely agree with Pascal Boyer or anything.
I haven't read much by Armin Geertz, but what I have is good. I'm guessing he's related to Clifford somehow.
this is an odd feeling for me. Two fields colliding, but I'm oddly dubious about it. I'll enjoy reading it, though.
I have some hope for this venture as they have anthropologists on-board whereas some prior efforts to merge psychology and anthropology/history, much like biology, have tended toward vulgar determinism. (Cough psychohistory cough) Now if they get Scott Atran and Harvey Whitehouse on board, that would be pretty damn awesome.
Safe words
That must be an amazingly hard thing to deal with. "I have these as my limits". "you passed my limits" the person is going to say "so what, gonna turn me in". Cause I pretty much assure you, you walk into the police or Court and say "yes, i let him do X, Y, and Z, but he also did A - and that's not consentual". they would laugh at you. yet it's still non consentual sexual acts at that point.
By the way, the words "I don't do drama" are such a fucking cop out of integrity and responsibility. It is a way to tell yourself it's ok not to listen to people when they say they are being abused, bullied, etc., in any forum.
That is quite a ridiculous case. one could argue that ear piercing, or "worse" is consentual harm to teh self. One could argue that doing sports such as a marathon, or an iron man, where your body is pretty much torn up, is consectual harm that should therefore be outlawed. And i suppose no one is allowed to fight in the UK in the ring?
Right. being in a ring with some other guy making your face into jello is "macho" and "cool" and "perfectly normal". but asking someone to spank you is not.... gotcha.
Any article opening with "Maggie Mayhem is dressed like a kinky dictator" is going to be awesome.
sounded like a kinky children's book to me. (wierd, my cat is now sleeping on the pillow. i have dumb cats)
Job woo
So we've got 'mission statements', the various interview pseudosciences (including some kind of handwriting thing—nobody's ever going to employ me)... what's this about paychecks?
lol. oh, just the idea that you will ever be paid what you are worth. thogh many are paid more than they are worth, but those people are the uber rich
I might start us an article then, though of course I don't know what I'm talking about on this subject.
You forgot the ultimate in "job woo": Taylorism. Produce, you looters! Faster, faster!
the irony is production goes up when people are happy, when they are given a sense of idependance and control, adn when they feel as if they are accomplishing something at the end of the day.
I've seen studies doing lego production. even building the same lego block, people are happier when they know what it is f or, why it's being made. and pay rate is not as important as being able to participate, even in the smallest, in design or ideas about production.
humans like to contribute, feel useful, and THINK. :-)
