Venetic theory (Slovene: venetska teorija) is a nationalistic crank idea that Slovenes are master race in Middle Europe, because they inhabited lands of Slovenia since forever prehistory. It is to Slovene scholars what Intelligent design is to American scientists, as it also uses the creationist method (here are conclusions, what facts can we gather?). Wide support of Venetic theory in laic and political circles[1] makes scientists (and people with common sense) sad pandas.[2]

Concept

Venetic theory goes something like this: Slovenes are direct descendants of Venets (abominated "Slovenetes") that inhabited lands of modern Slovenia in pre-Roman era. They spoke proto-Slavic languages from which all Slavic languages evolved. As Slovenes were supposedly on Slovene lands first, they are the best Slavic (if not European) race, not the Russians. Ancestors of Slovenes didn't settle in Eastern Alps from behind Carpatian mountains in 6th century.[1] Those were the Croatians and other Balkan Slavs. That was German nazi propaganda theory for making Slavs look inferior that people bought into.[3]

Evidence that clearly shows that Venetic theory is the ultimate truth

Venetic theory was developed by author and quasi-historian Jožko Šavli, catholic priest and publicist Ivan Tomažič and ex-partisan author Vladimir "Matej Bor" Pavšič. The theory is based on some vaguely similar sounding names of nations throughout Europe, some even more fuzzy linguistical similarities between Eastern European languages, and some history theorizing.[1] There were also some strange claims about DNA relating Slovenes to Sweden and Norway people.[4]

To be more specific on "linguistical evidence:" Venetic theorists often take inscriptions of ancient Veneti (nation of Veneti really existed, by the way), give them to Slovenes and tell them to read inscriptions using their modern Slovene language. Off course, noone knows how to read ancient Venetic runes. Until they are told what to read.[5] Placebo?

Venetic theorists often hold idea that Slavic settlement of Eastern Alps is making Slovenes look inferior, and that that alone is enough to attack the 6th century settlement theory. They often ignore archeological and actual linguistic evidence that debunks their theory. They also like to declare venetic theory truth.[4][6]

Shocking reality

All of archeological, linguistical and historical evidence gathered about ethnogenesis of Slovenes thus far points to Slavic settlement of Eastern Alps in 6th century AD.[1] There was indeed an Italic nation called Veneti on a part of modern Slovene lands in pre-Roman era, but they were heavily celticized. And then romanized. And then slavicized. And all they left behind was six (Count 'em! Six!) inscriptions. Dr. Rajko Bratož, one of most respected Slovene historians, speculates that 1% of Slovene heritage is of Venetic origin.[2] That's ... not enough to support the Venetic theory.
