Adoption

Adoption of children happens when someone other than a child's biological parent takes on the rights and responsibilities involved in raising the child, and they are considered for most purposes as though they were the child's parent. Gay adoption has been a major political issue, with conservatives making the circular argument and self-fulfilling prophecy that gays should be stigmatized since they can't raise children as well as straight couples, and that they shouldn't be allowed to adopt children because the stigma gays carry would cause their adopted children hardship. Adoption is also set forth as being a great alternative to abortion, the assumption being that no matter what race the child may be, or what special needs (e.g. a caregiver skilled in handling children with Down's syndrome) prenatal tests may predict the child will have, there will be plenty of loving couples eager to adopt them.
