Andrea Yates
Andrea Yates is an in-patient suffering from depression and psychosis who is currently committed to a Texas state mental hospital after she drowned her five young children in the bathtub, being under the impression this would save them from hell.[1]
Mrs. Yates was brought up a Roman Catholic, possibly explaining her reluctance to use contraception as the Catholic Church considers artificial contraception to be intrinsically evil.[2][3] When she and her husband came under the influence of a self-ordained preacher named Michael Peter Woroniecki, they resolved to "go natural" and not use any contraceptive devices;[4] Mr. Woroniecki apparently responded by informing them that they were on the quick path to hell.[citation needed]
Six years and four children later, Mrs. Yates was diagnosed with postpartum psychosis, and she was advised not to have any more children. She did not listen, and her fifth child was conceived shortly thereafter.[5]
It was as the doctors had predicted; Mrs. Yates had another episode and was hospitalized once more. She was released under the stipulation that she be watched around the clock, but on June 20, 2001, Mr. Yates did not take this to heart, being of the opinion that depression can be treated with a "swift kick in the pants,"[6] and left her alone with the children. She, having heard God tell her that killing them was the only way to keep them out of hell, promptly drowned the lot of them in the bathtub.
Being tried for these acts, Mrs. Yates was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Mr. Woroniecki has, unfortunately, not been charged with any crime in the matter.
