ReligionReligion is the set of beliefs and practices that groups develop around various mythologies and superstitions. The strongest force in history that has stood against rational thought, science and intellectual development has been religion. Today the war on science and the religious right's takeover of the political systems in the United States are merely symptoms of a historical battle between these forces of superstition and empirical reality. Understanding the source of religious belief, what they teach, how they are inserting their ideas into the public discourse, and how to argue against them are all fundamental elements to developing a coherent rational system of governance and ensuring that science will be able to continue to advance the knowledge of humankind for many future generations. |
