Chance or Purpose? Creation, Evolution and a Rational Faith is a Christian theistic evolution book written in 2007 by Christoph Schönborn the Austrian cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Contents

[edit] Overview

In the book Schönborn accepts evidence for evolution and common descent and claims it is compatible with Catholic belief but denies the "neo-Darwinian" interpretation of evolution as in his opinion evolution is not random and it is directed (see Guided evolution). The main claim of the book is that science is incomplete without spirituality and the Christian God is guiding all natural processes.[1][2]

[edit] Reception

Schönborn is not a scientist and the book has been described not as a scientific but a religious book for Catholics so they can keep their faith in God whilst still accepting evolution.[3] While Schonborn claims he does not dispute the general theory of evolution he has used arguments similar to intelligent design advocates and in many cases he attempts to replace natural processes with God.[4][5]
