Essay:Why notability is stupid and I hate it
From RationalWiki
People sometimes vaporize or attempt to vaporize articles because they're not "notable" enough.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
I oppose these actions. We should have articles on as many identifiable missional subjects as possible, for a number of reasons:
- RationalWiki may be the only "objective" source on an subject. If a subject is notable, then information about said subject probably exists elsewhere. If a subject is not notable, then information about said subject probably does not exist elsewhere. This is especially true when looking for rebuttals to crankery, because rebuttals require both some person notices said crankery, that that person is opposed to said crankery, and that that person has the effort, resources, and intellect to rebut said crankery. For notable subjects such as Young earth creationism, all three criteria exist. For non-notable subjects such as Project Blue Beam or Neumayer Station or Vigilantcitizen.com or innumerable other crazy, yet not notable, subjects, very often not even the first criteria exists, much less the second or third. Thus, it is hard enough for these subjects to get the response that they need. Because of the nature of RationalWiki, it's more likely that RationalWiki will fulfill some or all of the criteria when other sources do not. Deleting on notability grounds hurts rebutting crankery and thus hurts RationalWiki's mission.
