Copyright Problem[edit]

I'm not sure this can be used. Way back in the day, I used a similar image on the Scottish Liberal Democrats' website and was eventually told to take it off for copyright reasons.

See this and this for more information. –SuspectedReplicant retire me 00:39, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Hmm, fair enough. Although the page says: "The principal emblem of the House is the Crowned Portcullis. It is a royal badge and its use by the House has been formally authorised by licence granted by Her Majesty the Queen. The designs and symbols of the House should not be used for purposes to which such authentication is inappropriate, or where there is a risk that their use might wrongly be regarded, or represented, as having the authority of the House." I reckon that using it as this icon couldn't be construed as use which implies authentication, whereas the use on a political party site could be considered such. BUT, since we're not using it to simply demonstrate the logo, I accept it's not clear fair use. Tommorow I'll drop Parliament an email (heh, didn't think I'd ever say that) linking to a tinypic version, see what they say. It does say: If you require further information about using the Crowned Portcullis, please contact webmaster@parliament.uk. DalekEXTERMINATE 03:49, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Personally, I agree with you. It's only because I've had prior experience with exactly this situation - using that image on an icon - that I brought it up. You can see the icon in question here. –SuspectedReplicant retire me 08:07, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
The Lords has had some problems with people using versions of its insignia of late - David Gerard (talk) 11:44, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Also, if at all possible, you should do the icon as an SVG - David Gerard (talk) 11:44, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
It wouldn't be too difficult to knock out an alternative. A stylised version of the houses of parliament + Big Ben (*ahem* the Clock Tower *ahem*) would be nice. Scarlet A.pngmoral 12:51, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
<patriotic pedant>Big Ben in not the clock tower, Big Ben is the bell inside it. </patriotic pedant> DeltaStarSenior SysopSpeciationspeed! 13:00, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Hence the part of the post that reads "(*ahem* the Clock Tower *ahem*)" :P Scarlet A.pngmoral 21:03, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
The image has been unloaded to tinypic, and a request to use it in that form to demonstrate that an article is on the topic of British Law has been sent to the email address they suggested. They've replied, saying the request is now with the Department of Chamber and Committee Services. DalekEXTERMINATE 16:48, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
Ah, I love doing things by the book... Scarlet A.pngmoral 17:43, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
) It's probably going a bit far for an icon, and an alternative would be pretty easy. I have a feeling they'll just say no, and even if they say yes, it'll probably be quite seriously limited in where it can and can't be used. Just don't bother with an icon, or think or something else? What do you think? DalekEXTERMINATE 18:02, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

How hard would it be to make our own version? Really? Anyone can draw a portcullis, pop a crown on top and hang a couple chains and voila! Pomegranate (talk) 18:31, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

I think they're pretty strict on ANY use of the insignia, even if we make it ourselves. DalekEXTERMINATE 18:41, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Image has been deleted as I recieved an email saying we may not use the image. DalekEXTERMINATE 18:41, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Wow, that was fast. I was expecting them to take days. –SuspectedReplicant retire me 18:45, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
An image, as far as copyright and use is concerned, is more than just an exact replicated arrangement of pixels. If we go back to the idea I had above, we can also make it general to UK law and politics. This would increase the number of articles you could include the template on and would cover a broader and better category. Scarlet A.pngmoral 20:04, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Useful?[edit]

Derived from a PD image on Wikimedia Commons— does this cut the mustard? Sprocket J Cogswell (talk) 21:46, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

Fine by me. Scarlet A.pngmoral 00:23, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
