Forum:The historic war movie thread
From RationalWiki
So, I've always been a bit of a fan of historic war movies. Well, only ones that are based on real people and events like Flags of our Fathers, compared to Full Metal Jacket. I'm about to watch The Battle Nasilinnasta 1918 about the battle from the Finnish Civil War. I don't know who all has seen it, but it got me thinking about other historic war movies, and made me want to talk about some.
So RW, what is your favorite historic war movie?--Just relax, and stay funny (talk) 00:51, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

- To try to keep this from dying painfully, I'm going to give a quick review of The Battle Nasilinnasta 1918. I have to admit, I know pretty much nothing about the Finnish Civil War. Or Finland's geography in general. So, I watched the movie, got done and had two basic questions: Where the fuck is this happening, and what is the importance of this battle? The conflict mainly takes place around a mansion on the outskirts of a town. I have this feeling that the event was major enough that the film production crew (who are Finnish) didn't feel a need to go "This is where the movie is taking place, this is the importance of it". I can get that they didn't because it would have been talking down to the main audience, but it still would have been nice if they included a slide before the film explaining these things to non-Finns. It seems sort of like a Finnish version of what Europeans are always complaining about that Americans do: you just assume we are going to take the same sides as you and have the same back-knowledge as you.
- Aside from that, it was a good movie that I felt conveyed the bond of soldiers and the confusion of conflict, and while I felt confused because of the lack of context, it did help give a sense of the seeming meaninglessness of battle, and the feeling that those in combat must get during the conflict that the battle is all for nothing.--Just relax, and stay funny (talk) 20:39, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
