Forum:Wanting to Dedicate a Podcast to RationalWiki; I need advice

A modified version of the RationalWiki logo.

I'm quite new to making contributions to this website, but I use its articles regularly in my day-to-day life. Many of my friends and family are casual podcast subscribers. They mostly listen to comedic ones, and a lot of my friends have been pushing me to start one of my own, which is something that I now intend to do. I want to dedicate my podcast to RationalWiki and its contents, but I'm not sure where to find details on copyright permissions or other legal things. I have a logo and name which stem off of those of the RationalWiki website, but I don't know if I would be allowed to use it or not. I'm also trying to decide what the actual content of the podcast should be. I want to focus partially on Clogosphere commentary, but I'm not sure what to do otherwise and I feel like I should let the rest of the community decide. Those who give input are awesome. Thanks!— Unsigned, by: StayMinty / talk / contribs 04:15, 30 May 2014‎ (UTC)

For any legal issues you need to go here. Hope it works out for you.--Bob"I think you'll find it's more complicated than that." 06:05, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
What do you mean by "dedicating" your podcast to RationalWiki? Basing it on RationalWiki articles?--ZooGuard (talk) 07:32, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
If you take inspiration from WIGO, that's fine. There are a few summaries on the WIGO:RW Blog whenever I remember to do them (we're towards the end of May, now, so it'll be time for some fresh ones). If it's that sort of digest in podcast form, go for it. Scarlet A.pngDon't click here 10:42, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

The articles are all free content under Creative Commons by-sa 3.0, so you should be able to make a spoken version of them, or adapt them as you please, without permission. You just read the license statement at the start or end. (I am not a lawyer and particularly not your lawyer.) CC themselves: [1] They link to a PDF from CC Australia, which mentions attribution in general and podcasts specifically - David Gerard (talk) 10:33, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

The RW logo and associated identity aren't released under CC (see RW:LOGO) but that generally doesn't stop people using them for other purposes. Scarlet A.pngDon't click here 10:39, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, basically don't pass it off as official (unless/until it is) and you're good to go. Heck, spoken versions of articles might be a useful thing to have for the wiki itself, like how Wikipedia does - David Gerard (talk) 12:45, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
but that generally doesn't stop people using them for other purposes. It should. He doesn't have permission to use the logo. He can contact the foundation if he wants it, though. A podcast wold be neat. Nutty Roux (talk) 14:16, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Bump. He can contact the foundation if he wants (he should). A podcast would be neat. Several of us have been discussing this for years, but we have no idea what we're doing. Nutty Roux (talk) 16:25, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
Speaking through my board member hat, I concur, an offishul podcast would be way cool - David Gerard (talk) 20:08, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
If it's a RW-branded podcast then it needs to be open to a wide-range of contributors, but it would still be neat to have a "fancast". Redchuck.gif ГенгисYou have the right to be offended; and I have the right to offend you. Moderator 14:59, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
