Forum:Would the Holocaust have happened if Christians hadn't been preaching Antisemitism and homophobic hate propaganda for centuries?

I'm sure that there's a lot of factors that went into why the Holocaust happened, and if Christianity hadn't existed, it probably would have happened at least in Eastern Europe because of other racist attitudes spread by the Nazis. I suspect that there is a good chance that the Holocaust would not have happened in anything near the severity as it did if Christianity didn't exist, or didn't spread hate propaganda against Jews and gays. And then, low, via the bad science of the time we determined that jews simply should not exist. People always like to say "but if religion didn't exist!" and then i slap them for being stupid and point out if it wasnt religion then something else would have been used.--Mikal Harass Follow 20:37, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
EC Not sure if trolling or just confused. Also, both the Holocaust and Christianity existed, so any statements about what would have happened if they didn't would pretty much meaningless. Theory of Practice Still tryin' to figure it all out. 20:40, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
Christianity has been so central in European culture for the best part of two thousand years that you can't simply pick an event in modern history & ask "would this have happened the same without Christianity?" because it's basically meaningless. If you're going to talk seriously about "if Christianity didn't exist", you would need to wind right back to the late Roman period & speculate about how the Roman Empire & the cultures that made it up & surrounded it might have fared differently, & go on from there. We would have had a different kind of Middle Ages, a different Renaissance, come to the Enlightenment somewhat differently, & so on. But that's delving way into alternate history, and is unlikely to lead you anywhere meaningful. WěǎšěǐǒǐďWeaselly.jpgMethinks it is a Weasel 21:08, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
I was interviewed recently at a convention in a discussion about stereotypes. I was dressed as The Invisible Man (Before the reveal, Covered head-to=toe, like Claude Rains). The interviewer asked me some questions, one of which to the effect of, "How do you think we can end racism?" I told him I had no clue, since people have been making excuses to hate each other since there were people living on the "other side of the river". He then suggested we could all just wrap ourselves in bandages (I admit I'm not funny).
Anyway, point being, people get massacred and it's horrible, and there would have always been some other rationalization by the perpetrators. The all-too-common rationalization boils down to "Well, they were in the way". --TheLateGatsby (talk) 21:36, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
I've never understood how people can think like this. You honestly believe that there hasn't been moral progress? You think humans will be just as despicable as they always have been, and we shouldn't even try to change the beliefs and culture for the better? I didn't say we shouldn't try. I said I don't know how to fix the problem. --TheLateGatsby (talk) 23:37, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

What I was trying to propose before, which is a fairly dumb point as I think about it, is what role did anti-Semitic and homophobic ideas as promoted by the Catholic Church have on the Holocaust? The Church did have a history of Antisemitism and homophobia, and so I was wondering if that led to the Holocaust or if it affected it in any way. There was a documentary I saw about the role of Christians and centuries of anti-Semitism leading to the Holocaust, and there were tons of Christians down rating it and leaving obviously guilt filled negative reviews. Wow. Textbook Leading question! Impressive!--Weirdstuff (talk) 10:20, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
My opinion is that Germany has more to do with nationalism than religion since circa The Franco-Prussian war. So if Holocaust didn't involve Jews, some other non-German races will be dragged into it. [[User:K61824|]][[User_talk:K61824|]] 15:57, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
