Help:Poetry

Poetry does not come easily to MediaWiki, since consecutive lines are treated as one.

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves

Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:

All mimsy were the borogoves,

  And the mome raths outgrabe.

becomes:

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.

There are several ways to deal with this:

1: Use a blank line between each line[edit]

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves

Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:

All mimsy were the borogoves,

And the mome raths outgrabe.

2: Use a colon (:) (or 2, or more) at the beginning of each (or every other) line[edit]

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

3: Make each line a paragraph using

[edit]

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves

Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:

All mimsy were the borogoves,

And the mome raths outgrabe.

4: End each line with a
[edit]

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
  And the mome raths outgrabe.

5: Use

[edit]

(deprecated)

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
  And the mome raths outgrabe.

Uneven lines:[edit]

If you want uneven lines, use or colon(s) instead of spaces at the start of each line you want indenting:

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves

Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:

All mimsy were the borogoves,

And the mome raths outgrabe.

Verses[edit]

To make breaks between verses, use as many : as required (note the colon at the beginning).

Formatting[edit]

You can, of course, use
or any other additional formatting you desire.
