Visible light ranges from wavelengths of 400 to 700 nanometres (approximately), and is described as ranging from "red" to "violet". Just beyond this range in the electromagnetic spectrum in each direction are the infrared (lower frequency) and the ultraviolet (higher frequency), both of which are largely constrained from being useful to vision on Earth.
