The flag of Madagascar.

Madagascar is a passable series of animated films an island nation off the east coast of Africa.

Madagascar is best known as the home of strange wildlife such as lemurs and "aye-ayes", but it is also notable for being one of the last places on Earth to be settled by humans. The mostly Austronesian (distantly related to Indonesian) settlers arrived sometime in the first millennium CE, settling mostly in the hills. A large group of Africans later settled (many were brought as slaves) but they lost their language and now speak "Malagasy", a Malayo-Polynesian language.

Madagascar was haphazardly colonized by the French, who cared a lot more about their West African territories and hence gave the natives slightly more peace than in many other areas where the colonial authorities saw it their duty to carry the white man's burden. Possibly as a result, Madagascar is considered (according to some sources) the most heavily Pagan nation on Earth.
