Polite society

Polite society is an euphemism referring to any collection of people who value propriety[1] and civility[2] above all else.

Wikipedia has this fork page where the first two definitions of "polite society" are:

  • the etiquette of the upper class
  • the manners of the upper class

However, in more rural areas like Jesusland, "polite society" usually refers to sexually repressed people of all classes who long for righteous, upstanding evangelical Christian family values, not to mention the good old days.

For example, here's a video of a young, unhappy George Carlin when he was still trying to be popular with people in polite society:

And here's an older, slightly less unhappy George Carlin after he had decided to spend the rest of his life flipping off polite society:

BTW, the flag button on YouTube is evidence that polite society still has a powerful influence on the rest of us.

[edit] Footnotes

  1. I.e., sexually neutral language.
  2. Although, ironically, topics regarding violence seem to be acceptable.
