RationalWiki:Requests for Sysop
[edit] Lets Talk
- Do we really need more sysops? look at our user list. We have a 27% sysop density here at RationalWiki. Currently we experience no vandalism of any kind an there are almost no other administrative duties. Having a high percentage of administrators is bad for a wiki because instead of a single community where a few members have extra tools it divides the Wiki into two opposing camps, with one acting as bully towards the other. Do we want to become like Conservapedia where you have to be a sysop to be somebody? -Icewedge 13:19, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
- When you put it that way, it makes sense, but I don't have control over who is and isn't. I think we need more pages first anyway. Flippin;-) 13:21, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
- Yes agreed. We need more pages. The fact that people are already clamoring for sysop ship when we have about a one to one sysop to page ration is ridiculous. Lets see people contribute constructively for a while before they even think about administrative duties. -Icewedge 13:29, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
- TK could be a special case. I would vote for postponing Sysop appointments until there are more users/vandals to make it necessary. Doesn't mean either TK or HG can't be first in the queue (if TK's appointment is postponed. that's postponed, not cancelled). Airdish 13:35, 24 May 2007 (CDT)

- Seems like more than one person has been made a Sysop, since the posts here, without this so-called mandatory community discussion. I am not trying to stir the pot, but is this really fair? Hoji is made a Sysop, is blocking our members at CP, like Wikinterpreter, who I unblocked. So, me, discussion is mandatory, and HeartOfGold too. Is this really what you are all about? This is your fairness? --TK/MyTalk 04:37, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
- NO! THIS ! IS ! SPARTAAAAA!!! Sorry, I just have to say it. I do think TK would be a more worthy sysop than Hoji (good to get multiple viewpoints!), but one thing I'd remind you of is this: have a look at the protected pages and the block log. All but two of the blocks are either sysops mucking around, or Bohdan. All I can say, TK, is that you're not missing a great deal. --ויִכִּ נתֶּרֶפּרֶתֵּר שְׁלֹום! 18:56, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
- Thanks for that, Wiki. Of course if one could check the pages deleted from the DB, another story would emerge, no? All that was on my mind, originally, was trying to get another POV. I posted below today, what my motives were. Now that I have learned this place really isn't different than any other site, and the Admins here do exactly the same things that they accused Admins at CP doing, I am a bit disillusioned. The only real difference is, what they say it is. The talk the talk, but have never walked the walk, and as I have already said, this page is proof. They won't promote me or anyone because of their personal dislike, and use technicalities and plain lies to cover it up. And, one might ask, "Where are the big guns?" They are strangely quiet and missing in all of this. At least Andy posts, balls out. And please save me the bullshit about the "community" deciding here. Where was the vote on the last three people promoted? Maybe a wiki glitch? ROFLMFAO! I'd at least have some respect if they told the truth: They want to screw with Conservatives and CP Admins here because they felt they were screwed with at CP. Not very high-minded, but at least understandable. --TK/MyTalk 20:00, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
- "Promote" you? PROMOTE you? If you call it that, for what? There is a reason this site is exactly like all others, sir. And I'll go get the link... as soon as switch over from Peter B. to Mad Mike Malloy ... Ah, here it is. A clean slate doesn't help much if you have a dirty mind. humanbe in 20:10, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
- Hahaha! From a man who deletes items here, hides them, endorses the wholesale removal of items from users talk pages, and refuses the same rights to others? Get yourself a sense of honor and fairness. You, sir, are the bully. --TK/MyTalk 20:19, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
- "Wherever you go, there you are". PS, got diff links on any of your four accusations? humanbe in 20:42, 1 June 2007 (CDT)

- Don't feed the Troll --Kels 11:03, 2 June 2007 (CDT)
TK - so that Rationalwiki doesn't spend the next eternity discussing your sysopship, here's an offer. I'll give you my sysopship, for one week, and we'll see how it goes. We'll see if you would be a good sysop, and you'll see how little there is to do in the job. It won't increase the number of sysops, and if there is MASSIVE DAMAGE as a result of this, it'll be temporary. The option was open for ♥ o' Gold, so let's give TK benefit of the doubt. If he proves himself worthy, then great, he's happy, if he doesn't, we'll be vindicated in taking ... steps. --ויִכִּ נתֶּרֶפּרֶתֵּר שְׁלֹום!
- That was truly a very nice gesture, Wikinterpreter! But I wouldn't feel right. How about I take the missing Hoji's wrongfully allotted slot, how's that? There isn't jack-shit a sysop can do that cannot be undone. However given the constant shit unHuman deals out, I wouldn't stand a chance if you made me a Bureaucrat for a month, and I never logged in once. I never asked this to be discussed forever. Or at all. Blame Flippin for putting it to a vote and discussion. I have, in unblocking you (twice now) and several others, including ColinR, more than proved my willingness to meet (almost) everyone here more than half way. RW is starting to remind me of Air America, and reflect its great management. --TK/MyTalk 18:23, 2 June 2007 (CDT)
- Sorry, we don't have management, we have mobocracy. You can find more stringent management elsewhere.--PalMD-yada yada 18:27, 2 June 2007 (CDT)
- Get off it, and go fuck a goat, Doc. Someone makes people sysops and bureaucrats, someone, certainly not the members, decided to promote Hoji. Someone decides what rules to adopt, what rule proposals to delete, pages to blank from the DB. No votes on any of those, lol. Perhaps some B-12 for you is in Order? BTW, how's your weekend going? --TK/MyTalk 18:37, 2 June 2007 (CDT)
- Don't feed the Troll --Kels 18:48, 2 June 2007 (CDT)
- Nice way to get people to actually come here and stay, Kels. If you hadn't noticed, people are leaving, and without other voices that you hate, that will continue. It is no coincidence that the page with the most views is mine. They didn't come from the very few real members here, even accounting for their several sock members as well. Real people, coming here, and reading this shit will leave. You can delude yourself all you want, but for RW to survive and grow, many of the members here actually have to change their ways. --TK/MyTalk 18:54, 2 June 2007 (CDT)
- I hereby move to end this discussion, on two grounds: "go fuck a goat" and "I never asked this to be discussed forever. Or at all." Movement, if seconded and acclaimed, will cause all discussion here of TK's bid for sysop demotion to be archived and dropped. PS, since I wasn't involved, you will be blocked for another minute for complete rudeness to another editor. humanbe in 20:02, 2 June 2007 (CDT)

Nomination: New but very active and proficient user, "gets" the site and its goals, and I think it would benefit him and the site for him to have "delete" and "block" buttons. It would help him greatly in the housekeeping work he has already thrown himself into wholeheartedly. I'd like to see him demoted to sysop, to reduce my workload. humanbe in 14:57, 5 July 2007 (CDT)

Thanks for the nomination and support, I'm not sure I really deserve this demotion but having the sysop tools certainly would be handy. And I wouldn't have to keep asking others to delete things. -- Stevo (talk) 17:12, 5 July 2007 (CDT)

[edit] TK Oppose
Not until he lifts the ban he imposed on one of my CP socks or at least responds to an email to tell me why he did it.--CatWatcher 10:12, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
1.It's obvious the reference was to active members. 2. Almost all his activities here so far have been relentlessly negative. 3. I'd like to see him respond to the questions I left on his talk page including his objectives, and his feeling about our purpose which includes, "Refuting and analyzing the anti-science movement, ideas and people."--Bob_M (talk) 10:32, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
This site is going to be based on the free exchange of ideas and debating crackpot theories. Over the last couple days, TK has shown that his argumentative abilities are on par with a 12 year old. Providing him with any authority will therefore detract from the legitimacy of this site. No. --Huey gunna getcha 10:51, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
For now. If I see constructive content production (whether I agree with it or not), and when I see discussions on his talk page not degenerating into food fights, which at the same time means seeing at least several weeks of activity without belligerence on his part, I will consider changing my vote. So far it's based on about two days of observation, and when it makes me wince to read most of what someone writes, I don't see why they would "need" extra buttons. The user seems to want power, not resoonsibility. The user demands people not talk to him on his talk page. So far it's only a proposed guideline, but user talk pages are for community discussion and the content is "public". I'm sorry if this seems harsh, but they are my observations. I don't know about others, but I earned my responsibility by working on the transition from 1.0 to 2.0 (I know others did), and by making myself useful after the transition. I also only expect to hold such responsibility as long as I continue to meet those standards. humanbe in 12:33, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
- Just a quick heads-up that I changed the URL in your post. It pointed to DocSock's edit and not to TK's. If you wanted to point at the entire discussion, feel free to revert without comment. I just edited it to give the (in my eyes) more intuitive result. --Sid 12:39, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
- Oh, great, thanks for the heads up. Yeah, I was just using the diff I looked at. Clumsy of me! I think I also mentioned it on TK's talk page where he complained about personal attacks on himself. Thanks again for fixing it, and for letting me know! humanbe in 12:47, 1 June 2007 (CDT) Retrieved from "http://www.rationalwiki.com/index.php?title=User_talk:Human"
- So, by letting Hoji be a Sysop, when in point of fact he denies ever being a member before, you have violated your word. If he was a member, let's see him post here, or on his page, he was. He says you spoofed him. --TK/MyTalk 17:22, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
- TK, when quoting, it's only polite to either not add formatting or to say that the emphasis is yours. I also don't know why you bothered to (1) paste it in the first place (I gave my reasoning in the Edit History here, too) and (2) afterwards undo the change. I'll leave it in since it doesn't hurt, but I reverted your reversion and removed your uncommented emphasis in my post. If you got a problem, say so loud and clear. --Sid 17:42, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
- Addition: Regarding your selective bolding of me saying that the other diff is more intuitive, I've got to say that the post is in the "TK Oppose" section and mentions name-calling and personal attacks. In that context, your post ("No, unHuman..just you being he asshole you have always been....a two faced prick.") is indeed the more intuitive thing, and Human agreed. --Sid 17:47, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
And everyone, check the edit history here. What I see is Sid "helping" Human direct the link to something more damaging. However, what they point to is, that they are allowed to edit and delete things from their talk pages, while I was told by Human, Trent and others that was forbidden here. So, again it is proven that some of the Sysops and Bureaucrats here do exactly what they complain sysops other places are doing, and they do things they deny other members here the right to do. Interesting. Not! --TK/MyTalk 17:45, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
- Hiya TK. What I did is followed a change link to a page I was watching. Turns out, on that page, responding to a section I created and made a comment in, you called me some names (ow, I am so injured). So I just used that diff link to reference it. The fact that it was two diffs later is irrelevant, but might lead to confusion as to what I was talking about. So Sid fixed the link to the exact edit I meant, and told me on my talk page, where I resonded to him, as quoted above. If you want we can list both links? The first one and the "oops, this is the exact diff" one? Anyway, I don't know about Sid, but I haven't edited or deleted anything from my talk page (you're tripping?). humanbe in 19:21, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
- Ah, I missed you replying here. Like I said above: This is about what YOU said. This is the "TK Oppose" section, so I figured that the link right after "Name calling/personal attacks" was meant to point at the edit where you engaged in, well, name calling and personal attacks (as opposed to the reply to your edit). Turns out I was right. It's not a big deal: Human's reply shows that I did exactly what he meant to do.
- You're pushing the letter of the "law" to the extreme here. Let me tell you: It's annoying. Let me also tell you: Unlike CP, this is a community. Even if you were made sysop, nobody here would show more respect. It wouldn't change your edit history (which is filled with you complaining and/or trying to gain power by exploiting pseudo-loopholes). You would gain NOTHING. I honestly suggest you stop for a moment and consider a change of pace. This place is meant for constructive discussion and hanging out peacefully. So far, I don't recall you doing either. Any horribly mean thing we say in your eyes is just a direct reaction to your remarks or actions on CP or RW. If you want those remarks to stop, tune down the attitude. Take a look at what people here criticize and why. Action and reaction.
- Shake off the mindset that we're here to harm or attack. Stop interpreting so terribly much into everything we do. It will get you nowhere. RW is just plain RW. It was founded by people who got kicked out of CP for being too liberal or too fair in science issues, and it evolved into a general hang-out zone. I'm sorry, but your Evil Cabal is in another castle. --Sid 18:11, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
- Except, Sid, the rules here actually say I cannot be "attacked" or held accountable for something somewhere else, don't they? Yet they are only selectively enforced. My asking for Sysop, based upon a technicality, exactly what you and others who are Admins here did at other places. That record is very clear and accessible. And please, I don't expect any power or auto respect, and you and others implying that is disingenuous. What I expected was what I was promised by your Founder, ColinR; a clean slate, no attacks for actions somewhere else. If you continue to be honest, Sid, I think you will agree with what Colin has already told me, I didn't get it. Which is what lead him to make a rule and post it on the main page for all of you to see. He did it while chatting with me about the "problem". You don't address the fact that your sysops and bureaucrats have and are routinely deleting things from their public talk pages, something I was warned not to do by Trent and Human. So, like you said; Action and reaction. If your members had followed the rules, there would have been no reaction.
- Your last sentence, is laughable. There are at least a hundred pages here, or were before being removed, about attacking and vandalizing another cite, and still much here of people admitting it. Please, I understand more than most you and others wanting this place to change, and agree. All I wanted was to be a part of that. You and others allowed past actions to color your opinion, and I have already said I had some of those lumps coming to me, and was prepared to take them. Just not the continual pounding, even to this day, about shit from another site, and you and other Admins here do nothing about enforcing your rules about it. Even this page is a mockery and lie, given the promotion of others to Sysop in the past month (week), without discussion or community involvement. Congratulations to all Admins here! You have become what you claim to hate. --TK/MyTalk 19:37, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
- "You don't address the fact that your sysops and bureaucrats have and are routinely deleting things from their public talk pages" -- pointers, please? I've only noticed one other user doing that, and in that case I archived for him. But if I missed something, please let me know. --jtltalk 19:41, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
- Using the asterisk for emphasis and to ruin the formatting. TK, you claim, "the rules here actually say I cannot be "attacked" or held accountable for something somewhere else" when you actually changed my altering of the note on the front page to say that! I changed it from "the past" to "activities elsewhere". You reverted my edit - and removed the all important link to Helena Bonham Carter! humanbe in 19:51, 1 June 2007 (CDT)
As someone who has had moderation experience in the past, there are a number of things I want to see in a Sysop:
- Trustworthiness
- Reliability
- Good conflict resolution abilities
- Good ability with the tools at hand (in this case, the wiki system)
- Flexibility
- Ability not to take criticism or even insults personally
Having watched a good part of TK's activities in the past couple of days since RW 2.0 started up, I have yet to see any of those qualities. Questions about his positive traits have resulted in attacks, a high level of defensiveness and avoidance of the question, sometimes generating conflict where none existed. I would strongly oppose this member as Sysop, unless he were able to demonstrate a high level in most, if not all, of those qualities. However, to date he has shown more interest in insulting users, demonstrating abrasiveness, and pursuing status, rather than actually contributing to RW in any positive way. --Kels 13:46, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
- Given that this and this I'm changing to no, for now. I know it's something that's happened on another site but it was a direct result of User:Kels editing while not logged in here. I'm not going to comment on the exact timeline but it's enough to change my mind. Airdish 14:55, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
Although I favor TK as an important user on this site, I currently oppose him as a sysop. I'd like to wait until this site is ramped up a bit before making any new sysops at all... -AmesG 22:07, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
I would prefer to keep TK as far away from power as possible. He may not be able to resist blocking people, as he has shown on CP with his many baseless blocks. Həlios-speak to me! 02:03, 3 June 2007 (CDT)

... But, if he is made Sysop and behaves the same way we have all seen him (I said if - I am taking him at his word that he was just obeying the rules in cp) then I can see his Sysopship being revoked quick-smart. Then RW could be accused of banning alternative opinions. If we say no then RW is breaking it's rules (though I think it's purely on a technicality that he should be made Sysop, in my opinion he was not a "member" in any constructive or honest sense of the word). It's rock and hard-place time IMO, folks. Airdish 10:15, 24 May 2007 (CDT)

- Well, I don't remember the discussion that well. But first off there was a jokey off-the-cuff remark by somebody to the effect that everybody would be sysops automatically. Later though there there was some sort of qualification to that statement I think. Subsequently the allocation of posts firmed up somewhat when the site opened. The RW1 membership issue is not a "rule" to "game". Colin offered sysopship to members of the cabal, which essentially but not absolutely meant the people who had come to RW1 and participated. I don't remember a user called TK anywhere on RW1 (or anywhere else, for that matter) who seemed to be even a fringe member of the cabal. (There was, and is, no cabal). humanbe in 12:37, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
- Odd then that Colin told me, just last night, he would consider and think about my request, and speak to "the others". He didn't think I was gaming, but maybe he hadn't gotten the talking points from Kel yet. Yes, it was Kel who originally posted on my page that red herring. And I see all the usual suspects have picked it up. Including Trent. Are you ever kind, or nice? At least Colin and a few others doesn't greet my every post with suspicion and nastiness. I was user len. And for God's sake, spare me another post saying you didn't intend, you didnt mean, etc. Its pretty clear what you mean, (un)Human. --TK /MyTalk 12:54, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
- Look, take this to Colin and Trent then. On their pages. I have made this a public debate, as you wanted. You have gathered a number of votes--several from people who can't stand your tone. Now, take this up with the bureaucrats. If we were on CP I would say, this is Andy's issue--not Airdish, Bob, Ames, Me or anyone else's at the moment. Flippin;-) 12:59, 24 May 2007 (CDT)

Support. I agree with the view that we don't need more sysops, but I don't see how having more would hurt. And I think it would be good to have at least one sysop of good will from the right-hand side of the political spectrum, as well as one who wasn't part of the original supposed cabal. Also, HG has a sense of humor. I wouldn't mind clarification on what pronoun HG prefers, though, since I feel rather silly writing without them. --jtltalk 20:08, 24 May 2007 (CDT) (first 'one' in 2nd sentence added later --jtltalk 22:40, 24 May 2007 (CDT))
- H.o.G. has fantastic dedication, an even temperament, and a contrasting political view. These are all pluses in my opinion. Should we wait, though, before making new sysops? Once we start making new sysops, though, this user should be first.-AmesG 22:08, 24 May 2007 (CDT)

- I have no opinion one way or another about HeartofGold but I oppose until we have a clear reason for the appointment of more sysops.--Bob_M (talk) 13:54, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
- I'm opposing on the grounds we have no reason for more Sysops. I assume that by the time we do, we'll know how the aspirants work in this environment a bit better. --Kels 14:06, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
[edit] HG Comments
I am concerned because I don't know who or what the constitution party are/is (and the conflicting statements made about them give me pause) so I'm going to stay silent on this one. But if it was a tie and I had to cast the remaining vote i'd go for yes based on what I've seen. Ah, screw it, I'll go for yes.Airdish 13:21, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
Also, if you don't give me a sysopship, I will throw a hissy fit. (Not really. But I would enjoy having a sysopship here, probably wouldn't do much with it, and making me a sysop will enhance the impression of a "Doll house" or "house of mirrors.") HGHeartOfGold talk 19:56, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
- You're increasing my support by 1) Threatening a hissy fit (pull no punches!) 2) Claiming you would "enjoy" it (have fun!) 3) Saying you wouldn't "do much with it" (why work when you can sleep!) and lastly, 4) helping promote the "Dollhouse" concept (Welcome to it!). humanbe in 20:38, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
- Okay, I have reviewed the seniority, and I beat this user, Hojimachong, a fine user, who I believe is a sysop, to creating my account. [2] So, I should be made a sysop according to this rational. Heart♥Gold tx 22:41, 29 May 2007 (CDT)

[edit] Fundamental Power Situation
Maybe before we add anyone to the top-heavy list of sysops, let's just worry about the site we do have. It strikes me as more than a little odd that the first thing that comes from some of the CP folks is a bid for sysop status. While I would support both in the future, for now I'm left feeling that none of this is necessary. I am not embarassed for putting up this page--I think it is part of the site's learning curve--but granting knighthood or whatever to people is really not what we came here to do. Otherwise, all we've done is create another CP where the inmates run the prison (don't read into that analogy, folks.)
I think we are better than this. Let's try and get back to the work we came here to do, not the petty gossip that is so easy to become mired in. Flippin;-) 13:53, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
Considering that I suspect this place will need a lot less banning and deleting that CP, what does it ned so many sysops for? --Gulik 17:23, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
After me, we do not need any more sysopships. One of the first things I will do if I am made a sysop is lobby for higher standards in selecting sysops. But please do not make these reforms until after I am a sysop. Thanks. HGHeartOfGold talk 19:58, 24 May 2007 (CDT)
- Sysopship here, unlike CP, carries no status, no greater lobbying power. ----Linus(plot evil tech) 08:26, 25 May 2007 (CDT)

I definitely don't want to be sysop, and no matter what he tells you, don't give it to DocSock..he's a immoral vandal, and a devient.--PalMD-Talk 08:40, 25 May 2007 (CDT)
- While I'm sure that HeartOfGold is a nice person and everything of his I've seen has been most polite and reasonable I find his statement, "One of the first things I will do if I am made a sysop is lobby for higher standards in selecting sysops." a little worrying as it implies that he believes that sysops have some sort of higher status or more influence. HeartOfGold, if you spoke in jest please tell me. --Bob_M (talk) 09:36, 25 May 2007 (CDT)

As I give this page another cursory look, I can't help but wonder what would happen if we just gave sysop status to everyone mentioned here. We proclaim that "even vandals are welcome," so why don't we just give it a shot. Wikis aren't difficult to fix, why don't we just grant sysopship to everyone and see what happens. It isn't like we have a stupid 90/10 rule to deal with. I would appreciate any comments on this, but personally, I am thinking this could be done today. ʄĹїþþїɲ;-) 08:26, 15 June 2007 (CDT)
