Very long[edit]

This is now a very long article that needs to be sorted, material form two separate articles needs to be integrated. I've got an excuse, it's late in the evening here. Can Americans do anything? Proxima Centauri (talk) 19:49, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

No, American's are hopeless fuckups who can't write a damn. Try asking a Canadian. I hear they're experts at discussing the nuances of people who abuse their power to fuck children. Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 01:52, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

Rename[edit]

Just making a suggestion for comment. The article should be renamed Priest molestation or maybe Child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, not Priest molestation "scandal". Scandal is a somewhat loaded term, and IMO because of its use also for celebrity gossip minimizes the issue. It isn't a scandal, it's child abuse and rape. Discuss. Seconded. Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 18:21, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
Thirded. I prefer the latter name. The current name presses my grammar buttons anyway, "priest molestation" suggests it's the priest who are being molested. SophieWilder 18:33, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
Done. Proxima Centauri (talk) 18:36, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
Leave it to Proxima to pick to longest name possible. Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 19:37, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
LOL, but the name works for me. Glad you all agreed about the name change. One thing that irks me is when I see "scandal" used to refer to such things as child molestation by priests, the Penn State "scandal", or the Abu Ghraib "scandal". Scandals are celebreties caught having affairs, the sort of stuff the National Enquirer covers. Secret Squirrel (talk) 21:30, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

Should we be surprised?[edit]

As I wrote here, a certain commandment allows bearing false witness as long as it's in favor of thy neighbor. If you have such a loophole in your rules, we shouldn't be surprised if people will (ab)use it.--Max Sinister (talk) 23:05, 1 April 2023 (UTC)

Avoiding whataboutism in celibacy section[edit]

I've been editing wikis for a while, but I still don't know enough to be confident about this.

So there are child sex abuse scandals in other religions, including ones where the leaders don't have to be celibate. Jehovah's Witnesses, Southern Baptist, and Haredi communities in NYC comes to mind. I'll double check, but I think I remember research that said that Catholic priests are about as likely to sexually abuse kids as Protestant clergy (who are mostly married). How do I bring up the non-celibate religions and link that study (after I check if it's legit, naturally) without starting a flame war? Suomi10 (talk) 02:09, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
