Topic[edit]

I'm not entirely clear on how this furthers our mission.--Bobbing up 13:09, 29 September 2008 (EDT)

Okay, so I won't try to make any more red links blue. We aim to please.Teresita 13:16, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
My article about Linux has to do with the suppression of an operating system by monopoly power without regard to its merits, but apparently you don't think that is part of our mission, and I won't belabor the point. Unfortunately I'm not a sysop so I can't even delete the article. Teresita 14:27, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
Well, I suppose RW always has this geeky edge to it and you can't get much nerdier than trying to plug linux. There's nothing on Windows so perhaps the best way to go is the same way that the Facebook and Myspace articles went and just combine them all. Windows, Mac OSX and Linux into an article on operating systems? Though even then, it'd be a bit of a mission statement problem, unless any articles covering Microsoft and whatever the hell they do that pisses off hippies links to their main product. ArmondikoVgnostic 14:28, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
Let's keep it! New3.pngPink(It's so cute! Can we keep it? Please? Can we??) 14:30, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
I can't believe I'm seeing an AFD process on RW. When I was here a long time ago, the list of actual articles fit on a single page. Teresita 14:34, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
I concur with the mowse! IN SOVIET CANUCKISTAN, BEAVER DAMS YOU!!!YossarianThe Man from the USSR 14:34, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
My quite polite question was how it fit the mission. Nothing more. I did not suggest it be deleted.--Bobbing up 14:39, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
(EC) there are various political issues surrounding free vs corporate software, so this is keepable, even if I am using XP. Totnesmartin 14:41, 29 September 2008 (EDT)

Fuck Vista. And Linux. (Ok, not linux, I do admit, I'm running an Ubuntu/XP dual-boot) Pinto's5150 Talk 15:20, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
The only thing I hate about XP is when I'm reading something on the internet and this little speech bubble pops up and says "you are connected to the internet" - well thanks for telling me, I'd never have guessed! Totnesmartin 16:08, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
I see my point about RW being a haven of geeks has been fully vindicated :P. ArmondikoVgnostic 16:19, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
  • looks around* Geeks? Where? You mean like geeks who are so old, we still use _underline_ to indicate something in underlined, and *to either highlight somethign or designate an action, based on days of BBS systems that did not have pretty colors and fonts and moving smilies? Those kinds of geeks? ;-)--Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot""We are all born mad. Some remain so." 17:00, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
Well, at least the kind of geeks that get xkcd. ArmondikoVgnostic 17:03, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
Snapple!
Microsoft is so paranoid about people copying their stupid operating system they don't even ship restore disks anymore, they just have the restore program on a second partition of your hard drive, and you're supposed to make your own DVDs, which will be locked to only THAT computer, and THAT hard drive. And that's not to mention how bad Vista sucks, which is a whole other topic. 16:59, 8 April 2009 (EDT)

Wow[edit]

A) I love how outdated this is. B) Conspiracy theory much? --142.179.56.106 (talk) 01:05, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Son, I am Dissapoint[edit]

For a site that prides itself on being factual, seeing an image of tux as Che Guevara was a dissapointment. Such pictures are humorous and are not tux. When you say "tux is the mascot of Linux" under a picture, you might want to include a picture of how tux really is.— Unsigned, by: 5.54.178.37 / talk / contribs

"A site that prides itself on being factual"
You do realise this is just a wiki. That means you are going to see all kinds of inaccuracies, people messing around and factual errors when you go sift through the articles. If you care, then it's up to you to correct things. That's how a wiki works.
That aside, I think this was more a joke about Linux and socialism... which the mileage may vary on whether you find that funny or not. I suggest you sleep on it and remove it tomorrow if it still offends you. Nullahnung (talk) 23:57, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
That's a joke, son! Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 00:36, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Should we add a list of types of Linux available for public download?[edit]

There's so many, Raspbian... Bazer63 (talk)

Update the popularity section?[edit]

According to DistroWatch.com, MX Linux and Manjaro is the most popular distros that have been downloaded and not just Mint or Ubuntu. Should we update that so it reflects the current data? RockfordRoe (talk) 06:55, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

Seems like a good idea ⏣sapient_cogbag⏣ talk 07:25, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
I cut out the bit about netbooks and Windows XP as I think it doesn't serve much relevance in the section. I left in the bit about Microsoft threatening vendors if they ship Linux, but I haven't (yet?) found an actual source for this claim, so leaving as citation needed. There was an antitrust suit against Microsoft in 2018, but sections related to Microsoft threatening other entities seem more related to shipping their browsers in particular. Added a few citations too. 198.54.132.240 (talk) 02:20, 1 April 2024 (UTC)

CoC "controversy"?[edit]

Should we maybe cover the Code of Conduct alt-right astroturf controversy? --2001:14BA:27F7:BB00:745F:58A4:D0D2:4289 (talk) 15:15, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
