Devils' advocate "bit"[edit]

Although letting people in on the ground floor rather than giving them the arcane stuff first... simple practicality? (and there are much better sticks to beat the Scientologists with). Totnesmartin 05:59, 13 November 2007 (EST)

Well, yes, sure, you need to learn things in the right order. However, I am reminded of my old Boy Scout handbook and the way the rank progression works. You have to learn and pass the Tenderfoot stuff before you can become the next rank, but you can still get credit for higher rank things (like you can get hiking and camping stuff checked off for 2nd and 1st Class while not yet a Tenderfoot). And the handbook (and merit badge pamphlets) contain all the information you will encounter for you to read at any time. (Except for some of the Order of the Arrow stuff, of course, but that is a side track) humanUser talk:Human 19:11, 25 December 2007 (EST)
Know this is an older discussion but had to point out in the case of Scientology there is a very clear reason why concealing information from new inductees is a serious issue. New initiates into Scientology are told that they can keep their old religion and also be Scientologists. Later on they get told that the thetans were all brainwashed by being forced to watch movies about different religions-that seems outright misleading. The religious ideas eventually are audited out. Most Scientologists do not realize that technically their faith like the Raelians is a religious atheist group.Arachne1988 (talk) 22:16, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

Should I add a trivia section with a short explanation about the etymology of the idiomatic expression.--Arisboch (talk) 14:54, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
