No?

I shrug at you. I don't know what other people think, but I think it's pretty much inevitable that our technology will develop to a point where life will be practically incomprehensible to people to from previous times. When, how? I don't know, but I'm eagerly hoping for it either way.

I think you're confusing Clarke's third law with transhumanism.

Nebuchadnezzar (talk)19:09, 11 February 2012

Can be a transhumanist be one who realizes that many of the 'predictions' of computer geeks (mind uploading, cybernetics, artificial intelligence) are mere speculations, but hopes for them anyways?

F19:13, 11 February 2012

If you want to define it that way, I guess. Mind "uploading" is woo, though.

Nebuchadnezzar (talk)19:23, 11 February 2012

Why?

F19:25, 11 February 2012

Well, it's not "woo" in idea. We will some day understand exactly how we make memories, and therefore exactly how to replicate them. At that point we will be able to map all the memories and thoughts you've ever had and recreate them.

I don't see how 'uploading' someone's memories would be impossible. Of course you can't 'upload' 'all of a person', as a person is also their body, but memories and personality and stuff, yeah, that seems pretty plausible.

F19:47, 11 February 2012

All you've done is create a computerized facsimile. "You," as in your own subjective experience, will be gone.

Nebuchadnezzar (talk)20:02, 11 February 2012

Oh yeah, of course. Your uploaded memories will basically become a new entity.

I know nothing about this, so only wanted to make this one point. We are already "just for the hell of it", giving chicks the ability to glow in the dark, giving mice teh "ability" to talk (ok, not really, but adjusting the FoxP2), etc. 20 years? 40 years? it may not be "inconceivable", but it won't look nuttin' like it does today.
