"Some people" eh? Don't tell me you're still hiding in the closet when we could be turning this place into PervWiki. :P

If you'll allow me to speculate for a moment, I think it's all related to what the Buddhists call anatman (or the "not self"), the now-trendy psych concept of flow, or, in plainer English, what drugged-up hippies call ego death. Having tried all those experiences myself, they are all different of course, but similar in the way they are based on the destruction of the "self."

Nebuchadnezzar (talk)02:41, 16 November 2011

The thing about mystical experinces (induced pain, ehm, included) is that no matter what religion the person stems from, or what they did to get into that state, they all describe the same damn thing; "near death" shares that experience as well. "ego death" sure describes what I've felt on peyote, or on "vision quest" (i wish i could say anything less "new agey" there...). I've never actually been in real subspace. the pain part is not enough my thing to get there. but yes, i'm my own little (or big, as the physical case is) perv. ;-)

Pink mowse.pngGodotMoi j'dis, laisse beton02:52, 16 November 2011

Yeah, "religious" experiences are at base the same cognitive mechanism filtered through culturally relevant beliefs, which is the case for many other things as well. In fact, people attempting to graft their religious beliefs onto BDSM is not uncommon (it's just like "real life," but pervier!), in my experience, though when it happens it tends to be some New Age nonsense, pop Eastern mysticism (Jebus, Yahweh, and Allah frown upon kinky sex), or "sacred feminine"/goddess-worship guff (I blame it on the female supremacists). Which is why I'm grateful that my mistress is an even bigger atheist thumper than me -- nothing ruins kinky sex faster than quantum woo! (Now there's a sentence that should never have to be typed.)

Anyway, "subspace" and BDSM in general is not necessarily related to pain, that's just a misconception based on pop culture stereotypes. I'm actually fairly boring for a pervert -- D/s is the only essential element of it for me, though pain can amplify it, but it's not the central point for me most of the time. Some people need pain -- the technical term for them is "pain sluts." If you're serious about trying it, though, thumb through the RW-Recommended Wipipedia and see what sounds like fun. I wasted quite a bit of time not recognizing my own kinky proclivities because I thought BDSM was just about people in gimp masks beating the shit out of each other. I hope that image changes as it becomes more acceptable, but it's still pretty rare to see a depiction of BDSM in the media that's not totally cartoony.

I just wrote a long thing, and then erased it, cause "delete" doesn't do much at a wiki, so your transgressions and admittances are there forever.

let's just say, I've done my research. at 40, i know what i like. ;-) (i used to type with only i's if that says anything, hehe.

Speaking of cartoony - you ever see Exit to Eden, the movie. now THAT was a laugh and a half. i mean, the camp just sold it.

Pink mowse.pngGodotMoi j'dis, laisse beton04:21, 16 November 2011

Yeah, well, my transgressions are already littered across the wiki anyway, I'm not too worried about it.

No, I haven't seen Exit to Eden. Any redeeming features or is it just plain god-awful enough to be hilarious?

Nebuchadnezzar (talk)04:41, 16 November 2011

It's soooo bad, adn sooooo campy (though i don't think it was supposed to be, not really sure), that it's hysterical. some night, it would be a great background tv to your cooking, or studying or rational wiking.

Pink mowse.pngGodotMoi j'dis, laisse beton04:44, 16 November 2011

IOW, an excuse to show chicks in leather and laugh at the freaks as usual?

Nebuchadnezzar (talk)04:54, 16 November 2011

Chicks in leather, yay! Laughing at the freaks, boo!

B♭maj7 (talk) Anachronistically anachronistic04:55, 16 November 2011

Well, it's dan akaroyd and Rosie o'donnal (I don't think she'd come out yet).

Pink mowse.pngGodotMoi j'dis, laisse beton05:13, 16 November 2011

Rosie O'Donnell? Sounds like a terrible casting choice from both the "realism" and "hot chicks in leather" angles.

@Bflat: Don't get me wrong, leather is fun and all, but it can get a bit gross in the summer months, make squeaky noises if not broken in properly (it's a bit hard to feel properly dominated when you're laughing at a squeaky mistress), and it's your job to fix it if you mess anything up. On the whole, it's a bit overrated.

My one problem is that I'm technically a governmental employee working for two issues I care about (elections and Native American Legal issues). wrong comment on the wrong page and....

pretty much no one would connect my married name to this account. and no one here knows my maiden name which is what my professtional publications are under. so i try really hard to keep my life in discrete boxes. but its probably worth avoiding saying "spank me baby, yeah yeah like that!" no matter how good my "cover" is. ;-)

Pink mowse.pngGodotMoi j'dis, laisse beton04:48, 16 November 2011

Indeed, you gotta keep the worlds apart! I sort of wonder if I could even have my "cover" blown -- I think most people might just go "Heh, good joke." I guess if you don't go around blabbing about your "exploits" 24/7 like a drunken frat boy, people think you must be really straitlaced.

Nebuchadnezzar (talk)05:18, 16 November 2011

That's not true. I'll have you know, last week I dreamed of AD. He was in his sixties, wore sunglasses all the time, and gave tours of ancient tar pits at the bottom of a dry lake bed.

Neb -- one of the real things I worry about for "Kids" in their 18-25 is they aren't yet being judged by anyone exactly. Drinking, or over indulging, showing your tush or boobs, the rare or frequent indiscression you blog about are cool to your friends.

Then you get your first real interview with someone you have always wanted to work for, a respected PhD in your field; a well known attorney or politician, or an agency that is teh first in your town to go Green -- whatever. And they say "Oh, I think I've seen you on my son's facebook page, drunk and hung over".

Apparently, many companies even ask for your facebook ID. I tell all my young friends to keep two accounts. One with a full name, and one with a nick name... and on that full named page, ONLY EVER write "Pictures of me in France with mom and dad"..., "Pictures of me volunteering at Habitat for Humanit" etc.

Pink mowse.pngGodotMoi j'dis, laisse beton14:02, 16 November 2011

When I went to do media training, I was surprised that they recognised me when I walked in and had prepared questions in advance. Then I remembered they had my full name, university and area of expertise so they could go to my official website quite easily. Connecting that info with the FB account and the online handle is slightly more difficult - you need to know what you're looking for, at least.

My paranoid streak actually came in handy on that one -- I had an FB for a short time and then got rid of it when they started quite obviously fucking around with privacy, though there wasn't anything reprehensible on it.

Nebuchadnezzar (talk)16:18, 16 November 2011

I actually learned paranoia by trying to be an academic in the early 90s. despite all the "women are equal" crap, I was never taken seriously in our Native-L list serve comments, till I started going by T. Lastname, instead of Tanya Lastname.

I changed my online presence at that time to "Kip" which was gender unspecific, and people actually took me more seriously.

Even here, I didn't ID as female for maybe 2 or 3 months. how's that for paranoid.
