WE can "almost" read minds!!! who knew!

On almost every post where conservative denial of science rears its unwelcome head, a fascinating question breaks out in comments: do they really believe it or are they just being cynical assholes? The traditional response is “I can’t read people’s minds …but”. Now, thanks to the rapidly growing field of neurophysiology, we’re starting to get insight into the cerebral activities that rise and fall when someone is confronted by strong counter arguments to their beliefs. -quote from free though

any truth at all to the idea that "we can see activites that rise and fall when confronted by strong arguments?" or whatever? I'm really thinking this is pretty much bunk, "I'll prove conservatives are less intelligent/can't think/etc" meme.

Oh dear. I posted on this recently. If it's anything like that, I might just skip it, or possibly pick it up just to eviscerate it if I have the time/energy/motivation.

Did you ever see the scene in Salt where they have an fMRI of someone's brain to see if they're lying or not? The complete lack of an MRI scanner in that scene wasn't the only problem.

The big thing on TV detective shows now is "micro expressions". There was one that i really liked, *except* for the entire premise that you could determine lairs by their "micro expressions".

anyhow had i read on "Defacto mind reading? It’s a complicated subject, way out of my league as a writer. But luckily, I happen to have in my hot little hands a review copy for a new book due out in April by noted science writer Chris Mooney called The Republican Brain: The Science of Why They Don’t Believe in Science."

sighs. "it's a complicated subject, way out of my league", then WHY tackle it?

Yeah, that's also become the latest in poker woo. Who needs peer-review anyway?

Nebuchadnezzar (talk)01:40, 14 March 2012

please officer put me in jail cause my right eye twiched or my lips curled up in a micro snarle when you said the word "teapot", a word known to be used in some british terrorist circles.

. . .I wouldn't want people reading my mind. It's a rather dangerous place.

Dumpling (talk)20:36, 20 March 2012

i wouldn't want somebody reading my mind for sheer fact they wouldn't be prepared for whats in there; i like people not going insane

il'Dictator Mikal20:47, 20 March 2012

Let me guess, it looks like this.

Nebuchadnezzar (talk)20:49, 20 March 2012

Mine would be... well, my DA account is available, just look through that.

Scarlet A.pngd hominem21:13, 20 March 2012

God, you people are all so interesting. Read my mind, and you'll find some parts screaming for sugar (been good for 3 weeks now), other parts singing various Obispo songs, other parts wondering if i really have to do the dishes, a part devoted to whatever vid game I'm playing, and one special part reserved for the very boring romance I"m writing.

Pouts. I need to be different, exciting, and irrational!

Pink mowse.pngGodot What do cats dream about?21:39, 20 March 2012

I'm only one of those things :(

And that's exciting!

GodothasArrived (super crazy fun time!)21:40, 20 March 2012

Pink mowse.pngGodot What do cats dream about?21:42, 20 March 2012

I was lying. I'm actually extremely boring.

GodothasArrived (super crazy fun time!)21:45, 20 March 2012

I doubt that, somehow.

Pink mowse.pngGodot What do cats dream about?21:58, 20 March 2012

I think it's mostly my voice. I'm very monotone.

Dumpling (talk)22:36, 20 March 2012

well, theres the parts that think a million things a second, the part that contains the compendium of Henai knowledge, the one that contains a billion facts of history, the one with all my secrets, the one that contains my sheer rage at all things in existence, the depression, the happiness, and so on

il'Dictator Mikal21:51, 20 March 2012

At least you're not an eliminative materialist, otherwise your mind would just look like this. (Another terrible joke: How can you tell you've spent too much time in academic psychology? You start making jokes about eliminative materialism.)

Nebuchadnezzar (talk)22:00, 20 March 2012

At least they're not Bayes jokes.
