Why not specify image size? The first one is better a little smaller than the default thumbnail.

Because what looks good on your monitor may not look good on someone else's. Or what's large enough for your eyesight may not be large enough for someone else's. That's why you can change the thumbnail size in preferences. If you must change the size of an image, use upright to scale relative to the user's preferred thumbnail size.
