The Truth Hurts: How Creationists Lie About Evolution is pamphlet I have been working on to combat lies about evolution. This is a rough draft. I am trying to get down to six columns (three on one side, three on the other).

[edit] The Truth Hurts: How Creationists Lie About Evolution

Do you believe that evolution is a “lie”? Do you accept the arguments for creationism and against evolution? Have you done the research for yourself? Probably not.

“Can a blind man lead a blind man, will they not both fall into the pit?” - Bible

This pamphlet will inform you on the facts of evolution and show how creationists use straw men and cause-and-effect fallacies, false assumptions, omit evidence and quote-mine in their fallacious arguments.

Definitions - Understanding the Terms

The scientific definition of evolution, often referred to as biological evolution or the theory of evolution is the change in the gene pool (alleles) of a population over time. In essence, evolution has nothing to do with Big Bang, the formation of gasses and planets or the origins of life, abiogenesis.

Creationists will use micro- and macro-evolution to try to distinguish that evolution is not plausible due to time. However, they misuse the terms, such as stating all dogs came from a dog as an example of microevolution. Micro is a gradual adaption of a species, where as macro occurs in two groups within a species.

Theory, in scientific terms, is a hypothesis which has been confirmed through experimentation, observation, predictions and verification. Other scientific theories include the theory of relativity, the theory of gravity, atomic theory and germ theory. Do you dispute these theories?

Big Bang is the expansion of time and space, the beginning of our universe. Creationists state that it is an

“explosion” which is a misnomer.

Abiogenesis is a theory of how life originated. The Genesis story is a form of this since everything appeared out nothing except man came from dust and woman came from dust's rib.

Creationism is the belief in the literal interpretation of Genesis. Young-earth creationists believe that the universe is only 6 to 10 thousand years old. This is contrary to the evidence that debunks their arguments.

Intelligent design is the belief that a designer, namely God, created the universe rather than natural forces. Proponents claim that God is the designer, despite it could be any number deities or even aliens. And this begs the question, who or what designed the designer?

Survival of the fittest, adaptation, missing link, living fossil, common ancestor, descendant

Creationists state that humans are not animals. Again, they misuse the term. Scientifically, an animal is a multicellular eukaryotic organism that digests food in an internal chamber, is motile at a certain stage of life and their body plan eventually becomes fixed as it develops. Basically that means, if you can eat, move spontaneously, can undergo puberty and reproduce through chromosomes, you are an animal.

Within the animal kingdom, there are classifications such as mammals, primates and apes. Humans are biological grouped into these categories. A mammal is a class of warm-blooded vertebrate having mammary glands in the female. A primate is a placental mammal having flexible hands, good eye sight and a highly developed brain. The primate order include lemurs, monkeys and apes. An ape has a short tail or no tail at all while a monkey has a long tail. Also, an ape walks upright or knuckle-walks.

Hypocrites! - Religion and Morality

What is your religion? Christianity, Judaism, Islam, other, no affiliation? So, it seems that evolution and creationism are not religions.

A religion is a belief in a supernatural being, has moral codes and doctrines of salvation, sacred stories, and rituals to appeal to deities. Evolution has none has these. Creationism, at best, is a tenet of a religion. But mainly, it is pseudo-science.

Is evolution a worldview? When creationists use this argument, they are referring to social Darwinism which is a philosophy. It is based on claims that evolution is immoral and racist. This is a naturalistic fallacy and does not prove that evolution is false.

It could be countered that the Bible is racist because people believe that Africans are descendents from the curse of Ham, Semites, according to God, are superior and that Moses told his army to commit genocide on the Midianites.

Many creationists claim that evolution leads to communism and Nazism. They refer to Stalin and Hitler as “evolutionists” and atheists. Although, Stalin was an atheist, stating that atheism is evil because Stalin was one, is an association fallacy.

On the hand, Hitler never renounced Christianity and he would often credit divine providence in his thinking.

Again, this does not mean Christianity and creationism is false or immoral. But, it conflicts with assertions that evolution and atheism is connected with Hitler.

Did You Know? - Young Earth Debunked

Young-earth creationists will use debunked arguments when speaking to believers about evolution, knowing that they will never do the research.

Creationists uses Ussher's time scale which places

Biblical events chronological order, even though the Bible makes no mention when everything happened. Also, the time scale conflicts with archaeological evidence from past civilizations including the Egyptian pyramids.

Creationists claim that carbon dating does not work, but they neglect to mention that it works during a certain time period. Carbon dating indeed doesn't work in certain circumstances, such as in fossils that did not ingest their carbon from the atmosphere.

Another claim that an age of a certain object indicates a young earth. But, they neglect to mention it does not provides a maximum age. Also, they are older living things than their claims such as the “King's Holly” clones and the Pando clonal quaking aspen colony with a given minimum age of 80,000 years and a maximum of 1,000,000 years.

Creationists claim that a strong magnetic field would vaporize the planet. However, Earth's magnetic field is a dynamo model which would cause occasional drops in the magnetic field's intensity and even total reversals.

Young earth creationists will refer to fossilization of a t-rex blood cells reported in newspapers. Yet, from the research papers, no cells were present, it was minerals and the haemoglobin that was found.

Creationist claim that the second law of thermodynamics stated that the universe is breaking down to complete disorder. However, the laws apply to physcial events and chemical reactions apply to physical events and chemical reactions. Evolution is neither of these things;

The evidence that men could not have evolved from apes is that humans have 46 chromosomes and all other apes have 48. Rebuttal: it was discovered some of the chromosomes actually fused as they evolved, reducing the number frim 48 to 46. The new pair of chromosomes

is the Chromosome number 2.

Louis Pasteur debunked John Needham's experiment supporting Spontaneous Generation. Pasteur never did experiments of chemicals concerned with abiogenesis to show that life cannot come from non-life.

The banana has been bred and selected by man from wild bananas to get the best looking and tasting ones for many years.

It is claimed that fossilised trees found in layers of sediment were buried by a worldwide flood. However, there are other ways including local flooding to quickly bury things.

Although no experiment is perfect, even imperfect experiments can give supporting or disconfirming evidence. In the case of peppered moths, many experiments have been done, and they all support the traditional story (Grant 1999).

Piltdown Man was a hoax that was discredited by scientists by chemical dating method. However, Nebraska Man was an errorenous find as human and pig teeth are similar. Neither of these are used as evidence and they do invalidate evolution. The claim that Lucy's knne was found away from other bones is false as Johanson was discussing another A. afarensis knee. Also, there are other A. afarensis  fossils that confirm the same basic knee structure.

Creationists claim that there are no transitional fossils. But, they cannot agree on what hominid fossils are ape or human.

Noah's Story

Super evolution is a term created to explain the vast diversification in a short amount of time, according to young-earth creationists. Calculations estimate that a speciation would occur about once a day to go from the

10,000 animals from Noah's time to the 100,000,000 we have today.

There Is No God – Quote-mines

Creationists will use quotes to try to prove evolution is false. However, they extract quotations from their proper context to make it appearthey are saying something different than what was really said. For instance, Psalms 14:1 says “There is no God.”

One of the often-used quotes creationists use to disprove evolution is from Charles Darwin's Origins:

“To suppose that the eye, with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting different amounts of light, and for the correction of spherical and chromatic aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest possible degree.”

However, it continues:

“Yet reason tells me, that if numerous gradations from a perfect and complex eye to one very imperfect and simple, each grade being useful to its possessor, can be shown to exist; if further, the eye does vary ever so slightly, and the variations be inherited, which is certainly the case; and if any variation or modification in the organ be ever useful to an animal under changing conditions of life, then the difficulty of believing that a perfect and complex eye could be formed by natural selection, though insuperable by our imagination, can hardly be considered real. How a nerve comes to be sensitive to light, hardly concerns us more than how life itself first originated; but I may remark that several facts make me suspect that any sensitive nerve may be rendered sensitive to light, and likewise to those coarser vibrations of the air which produce sound.”

This supposed Sir Arthur Keith quote is claimed to be from the 100th Edition of Origins of Species:

“Evolution is unproved and unprovable. We believe it because the only alternative is special creation, and that is unthinkable.”

But, Keith passed away in 1955, four years before the 100th anniversary of Darwin’s work. The introduction was done by William Robin Thompson. He did write an introduction to earlier printings of Origin of Species, in use from 1928 to 1958. But, the words given do not appear in that introduction.

The last “edition” of Origin of Species was published in 1879 and later publications are reprints, so that there is no “100th edition”. No one can even find this edition of Origins.
