I don't take to trolls here. Wanna talk about something, especially a hot button topic, then be at least slightly respectful or save it for the talk page of whatever topic it's on. I am emotional, I get angry, and I get frustrated. but i choose to keep this page clean of that.

Tip of the day[edit]

Hi, I just caught up with your contretemps with Bricks about shitty articles. I know it is annoying to have someone correcting something when you are still working on it so I suggest that you useTemplate:WiP2. Comme ça: {{WiP2|Genghis Khant}} Redchuck.gif ГенгисOur ignorance is God; what we know is science.Moderator 15:59, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. It's generally not a big deal, except when people complain.... I'm not too touchy about much in life. at 40, you just sorta "get over" a lot of the drama. Every now and again, someone will say something that i really cannot change or control, and that irks me a *bit*, but not too much. And teh blow up with brx would have come to nothing, cept the one thing i've never gotten over is people who are not "doing it" (whatever it be in my world) telling me how to do it better. Brx talks a good show - but his reasons for being here are not really about writing and editing articles, they are for other things - which mind you, i have no problem with. Thanks for the template. :-) --Pink mowse.pngEn attendant Godot 16:10, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
I'm in two minds about the under construction templates. I can't actually rationalize my objections but somehow I just plain don't like them on articles. ADK...I'll explicate your zoot suit! 18:20, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
How is this for a rationalization: If you want to edit an article without interference, take it out of mainspace. Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 18:29, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
If it is already in mainspace, rather than a new article, then there is no harm in slapping a tag on it (just like closing the toilet door) while you do what you need to do. Taking it out of mainspace might also create a redlink. One problem is that people see a change in RC and dive in to fix a single typo which you may be in the process of fixing or rephrasing. Maybe "Under construction" is not the best title but two people trying to work on the same article at the same time is daft and a "do not disturb" or "come back in an hour" notice can give you a bit of breathing space. Under construction tags which remain in place for days or are a substitute for stub tags are definitely a no-no, they should be removed immediately after you are done editing. I endeavoured to implement autohiding/removal (after an hour since the last-saved time) of "in use" templates at work where editors were severely restricted but was stymied by the lack of Mediawiki extensions. Pro-lifer[edit]

I have one engaged in debate. He thinks that the pro-choice argument that "It's the woman's body and nobody else can tell her what she can or can't do with it" has been falsified by advances in biology. I have not read up enough about the "beginning of life" controversy to debate him any further on it, but if you want to have a crack, the debate is here. Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 03:28, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

The problem with me an abortion is i have a hard time staying on topic. hehe. I tried to address it, before my indignation got the better of me. — Unsigned, by: WaitingforGodot / talk / contribs
I've always thought that the "beginning of life" debate was something of a red herring. The question is not when does life begin, but when does human life begin. I'd argue that it begins when consciousness is attained -- a prerequisite for that is a functional brain.Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 04:02, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
(EC) The horrible bit there is, I had to press him to admit he was actually talking about the abortion debate because he feared just that sort of reaction. He is probably going to want some documentation of the claims; do you know of any reasonably neutral lay-person's survey outlining the current strands of medical/scientific opinion on that question? Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 04:06, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
The fetal pain page and this SciAm article are good resources.Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 04:10, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
I meant the question of the embryo being a separate entity. Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 04:17, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
I'll try to get you the medial definition as well as the biological one. It's going to be vague either way, cause there really is no hard fast rule of when life begins or when the woman's body is distinct from the fetus. Pink mowse.pngEn attendant Godot 04:24, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
Viability-wise, it's not. Biologically,it seems like it is. The anaswer, as WfG said, is highly context-dependent. Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 04:28, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
One argument to the fact that it *is* part of the body, is that if an embryo dies in utero, the woman's body just absorbs the tissue. Pink mowse.pngEn attendant Godot 04:34, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
Try When_does_life_begin. Mind you, I'm a little biased about it, sockwise.Travancus (talk) 12:19, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
I don't think that's possible to "falsify" with biology as it's a conceptual human rights and political statement, not one based upon fact. Even if, for the sake of argument, you accept that the fetus is an indiviudal and a sentient entity (which it's not, humans aren't full self-aware until they're nearly a year old anyway) and reject the choice argument you are still overruling the rights of another human being to control and experience and live as they see fit. Biology doesn't enter into it except to inform the decision, not control it. Biology tells us that an adult human is fully alive and individual, but that doesn't exclude killing them in self-defence. It just informs us that such a decision shouldn't be taken lightly and should be done with good reason, because it can inform the gravity of our action. ADK...I'll edifyyour drain cleaner! 12:12, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
By the way, biologically, there are two separate questions being asked here: 1) Is it a separate entity (yes - in all cases, yes), 2) is it part of the mother's body -- that's the biologically and medically tricky one. It is a separate life, but it is in every way shape and form, part of the mother's body based on things like "take drugs, you AND baby die". I Still don't think "is it alive" or "is it a baby" is at all relevant to the abortion issue, and have generally written as such. As ADK states, the fact is even if it's a 3 year old child, that can talk, think, and swim-- if it resides INSIDE my body, and I am a host for the things that it needs, I have a compelling right to put my needs, and my life first. There really is no other argument than that. If a woman has a complication at 9 months along, she should have every legal right to say ME FUCKING FIRST. the way the "it's a baby" crowd likes to suggest is that she must say "me and the baby are equal". Fuck that. at no time should the law tell me that i am legally not able to put my needs in front of anyone else that exists. Cause, since Descarte and his solipsist box, how the hell do i know if anything BUT me (including said baby) really exists? ;-) Pink mowse.pngEn attendant Godot 14:35, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
It's funny, but when Right to Lifers talk with me, they say things like "you can't even admit it's alive, much less a baby". I say "read my journals about my own abortions. I talk about it being a baby all the time. But that changes nothing about who's rights are involved. I read an article about the "value of life" that was truly in your face. something paraphrased - "the right talks about the sanctity of life, but they never talk about the millions starving to death every day in India, South America and internal (rural) china. They don't talk about the wars like Iraq, or Burma that kill thousands of innocent born babies every year. Nor do they address the fact that death by starvation is got to be harder than death before you are aware your are alive. or that living a life where you know you will be raped by the age of four (several southern African countries), and likely raped so many times that your uterus will fall out at 13, after your 3rd child...(same countries) is not a life that most people would consider one of value." Or countries like india where children are workign coal mines at 3 years old, cause they are 'toss away', and you can "have more. I think about that alot. yes, "50 million babies have been killed by abortionists", but 10, 20, 30x that have been "killed by god" while in the womb. and all of us die. many of us without having lived a life that has any joy in it.

French wine[edit]

It was me, I wrote that stuff. And yes, I live there. It was tongue in cheek but there are plenty of French who really believe that. Sure they understand that there might be a few Australian pinot noirs that are as good as a half decent Burgundy. Or that it isn't treasonous to drink a bottle of Rioja from time to time. Even the ordinary Frenchman who buys his wine in Leclerc or Géant isn't immune - partly because they sell almost exclusively French wine. Foreign wines are usually condensed down to a small selection or are sold in 5L plastic bottles.

French wine experts (wine experts who are French) can justifiably claim that France still produces the greatest variety of great wines in the world - no other country comes anywhere close. But a large swathe of the French population genuinely believe that foreign wine is mostly a pale imitation.

I have no citations. Ajkgordon (talk) 14:25, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

See, maybe it's cause of the class of people around where we lived, but our stores were stocked with mostly Spanish and Argentine wine, or really cheep ass (crappy)/amazingly expensive french wine. It seemed that anything that was good, but that i could afford wasn't French. Course, we live in the BanLieus of the 18th Arro. So - it's a different kettle of fish there. almost everyone is immigrant from somewhere, and damn the street/fast food is almost all arabic. which suited me just fine, thank you very much. You can put it back, if you want. I just ignore that article. it could be good, but it would need to be re-written, it would loose the humor which can be funny, and can be stupid... so I ignore it. And write about less funny things. Pink mowse.pngGodot Warning, chocolate will make your clothes shrink 14:31, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
What I do want to add, but won't, is that I've never meet anyone as linguistically arrogant as the French. Fuck, if you do not speak their language perfectly, they roll their eyes and switch to english, even when your imperfect french is far better than their English. My husband whines daily about "Why teh fuck are they using "live" when we have a perfectly good french word "en direct"." He makes damn l'academie francais look bloody liberal. And they way they whine about "youth speak", also makes me laugh. how dare they fuck with the precious French language, huh? Pink mowse.pngGodot Warning, chocolate will make your clothes shrink 14:34, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
Glad it's not just me that thinks that. They will put you in jail for daring to say "le weekend". Confuse "vous" and "tu" and they shoot you. This is a language with a quarter of the vocabulary of English and no flexibility, yet they still insist on translating every freaking EU legal document into it. ADK...I'll suckyour boat! 14:37, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
Nah, fuck it, I'll take it out. I wanted it to be faintly amusing and better than the last dreadful effort about wine and whine.
As for the language, I can kinda understand it but its futility is what's so depressing. King Canute. Still, France and its citizens are generally very statist - the state owns everything including its language and if it exists it must be regulated. A lot. But we live in SW France where very few people outside the large Toulouse multinational employees speak English. Nobody rolls their eyes at my imperfect French but they do at the arrogant English and Americans who just start speaking English with no effort at all at even a few courtesy French phrases.Ajkgordon (talk) 14:54, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
As for the article, i'm having too much fun with Cog Dis, (Oh, i need to put up a 'this site is being remodled" marquee...) to care about surrender monkees.
As for the language, when i lived in Nimes at 16, I found much of what you find, AJK. people trying to help, never laughing at me for being an idiot (well, the 8 year old did - he was famous for speaking quickly saying things like "la bas, une vache dans l'arbre la", and pointing. Me, not getting any of the words, just looked, and he laughed and laughed) And they would truly get annoyed by the American Tourists and their Camera-Hawiianshirt-LOUDLOUDLOUD damned selves. I'd mumble in my bad french that "I not speek the englaish, sorry".
LE WEEKEND!!! hahaha. Hubby hates that word. I keep telling him, languages change. They are supposed to change. Course, Quebec speaks like 17th century french, and he hates that too. maybe it's just french to be super critical and hateful of all things.
I think the language chauvinism business is mostly a Paris thing. I've had nice conversations with people in e.g., Nice using my half-remembered French from high school but seldom in Paris. On a related subject I once was visiting Montreal and needed directions, so I mentally rehearsed before asking a guy on the street, "Pardonnez moi, ou se trouve..." The response was "Sorry, I don't speak French." Doctor Dark (talk) 16:25, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
I recall the first time I ever went to France back in '63 on a family camping holiday; we arrived in Paris about 6.00 am looking for the camp site in the Bois de Boulogne and lost our way. Having done just a single year of school French I endeavoured to ask a garbage truck driver for directions. He was very polite, spoke perfect English and gave us a detailed map which showed us how to get there. On the other hand whenever I have visited former French colonies in Africa everyone has spoken perfectly understandable French whereas the ex-British colonies often speak in heavily accented English which can sometimes be difficult to fully comprehend. Redchuck.gif ГенгисOur ignorance is God; what we know is science.Moderator 16:49, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
I will admit, I feel very embarrassed (for me, and for my country and other English speaking countries), at how little foreign language we know, compared to how much english everyone else seems to know. There is no where in Paris (even well outside of the tourist areas) where you can't get help in English, and their english is far better than my french. When we visited Brussels, the major center of town you could find directions in english easily; same with the german side of Strausburg, and in SGeneva, no matter how much it "should have been" french, it was all english. When you speak the language of commerce, it makes it that much harder to push yourself to learn other languages.
Quebec is a riot. it is one of the single ugliest languages I've ever heard. Pink mowse.pngGodot Warning, chocolate will make your clothes shrink 16:54, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
Hahaha! Whenever they hear someone like Celine Dion speaking, most of the French I know actually grimace. It sounds awful! Ajkgordon (talk) 17:48, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
It's like they intentionally pinch their nose when they talk. so nasal. (I wonder if 'we' sound that way to Brits?). It's just ugly. :-) I won't comment on Celien, cause that bimbo can ruin any song she gets her hand on. No wait, i DID comment. God i hate her. My favorite song writer (Jean jacques goldman) has written 2 (+) albums for her, and the music is just divine. and she takes it and fucks it up. A song about simple prayer, quite, douce, subtle. and she does ok at first, but before too long she's screetching from the rafters. banshee with a "good" voice, but banshee never the less. Interesting. I've long thought that Canadian French sounded like a "southern" version of French (I was born and raised in the southern U.S., but haven't lived there for 30 years). I've never had the nerve to mention this to any of my Canadien colleagues in case it's a sore point, but maybe it's the nasality that gives me that impression. I seem to have a knack for finding stuff that will piss you off...[edit]

This is about a year old, but I came across this article about some organization called the Independent Women's Forum pushing global warming denialist propaganda in Colorado. They have loads of material on their site, but they don't seem to be asanti-abortion as, say, Concerned Women for America. I find it funny that so many groups nominally concerned with social issues push the denialist line so hard -- it fits in with the "everything as culture wars" thesis pretty well. Either that or they're taking in dough from the fossil fuel industry. Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 03:23, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

The Independent Women's Forum pushes conservative policies along with its feminism, just like the Redstockings pushed socialism, or the WCTU pushed temperance and progressivism, or Feminists for Free Expression pushes liberalism. Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 04:15, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
I think it's probably the case that most, if not all, lobbying groups are actually a front for issues beyond what they were set up for. It's like everyone's shouting "I want to be the head of my own political party!!" but, obviously, they can't get to do that - "♬ And Party Leaders you might meet / In twos and threes in every street / Maintaining, with no little heat,/ Their various opinions ♬". They have to either join someone else as an underling or get by without feeling as important. But if you manage to locate a niche - "I don't think there's a voice for pro-life communist homosexual black amputee women out there!" - you can set up your own group and claim to be speaking for that, when really it's just an excuse to push a wider social policy agenda under the guise of something more specific. So indeed, you might find yourself wondering why the hell an advocacy group for pro-life communist homosexual black amputee women is saying that global warming is a hoax, but really, it was probably never about that in the first place.ADK...I'll absolve your businessman! 11:16, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

1000[edit]

You have made over 1000 edits in 20 days. What are you on?TyTy 20:08, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Work is uber stressful. this is easy and calming. or, you know, crack! ;-) research and books are relaxing for me, as is categorizing like I'm doing now. So i work for an hour, and take 20 minutes off to edit. Wanna Vote? I have 30 different ballots from 30 different districts done, if you think you care about what person runs a small community Fire Dept. ;-)Pink mowse.pngGodotThe Peyote God awaits20:11, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
We have elections next month, and the anti-Jindal canidates are pretty pathetic. And my record is 2217 in a month. ;} And that's the 4th place award.TyTy 20:16, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
Impressive levels of procrastination! ADK...I'll absolveyour jelly! 20:23, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
(EC):Do those include bot edits? can't include what a bot does. The elections here are Nov 1, but the state is so strapped, they did not do a state wide ballot this year, nor did the counties... so I have to make each ballot, and go through the mailing lists and weed out corporations, and and and.... the Districts the firm represents are generally very small (under 20,000) and we almost never have to do our own ballots, cause there's a state or federal issue, but not this year. yeah. oh boy. gee. Don't forget to vote! Pink mowse.pngGodotThe Peyote God awaits 20:24, 20 September 2011 (UTC) ::::ADK -that is the EXACT word for it. "I'm dreading the shit on my desk... let's edit!"Pink mowse.pngGodotThe Peyote God awaits20:24, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
I'm OCD and very fast, so I was granted the ability to bot myself during the Stub Categorization project. I'm not running any scripts. Why does Ty have so much spare time? Because his family is insane, and he spends as much time on campus as possible.TyTy 20:28, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

"this is easy and calming." Very true. Blue (is useful) 20:35, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Tip[edit]

The folklore template adds the folklore category.TyTy 23:52, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Yep. figured that out about 5 minutes before you told me. lol. ;-) Mostly cause while I was doing the organization, i was just focused on the 'cat', and not the 'folklore template'. stupid me. sighs. By the by, we really have some redundant categories. oh well, another day, another dollar.Pink mowse.pngGodotThe Peyote God awaits23:54, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
We tried a reform a while back. It got bogged down in accusations of takeovers and edit-count padding. I'm game for another try.TyTy 23:55, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
Heh, like i need to pad my edit count. ;-) In all seriousness, if we do "give it a go", it should be slow. Take one small area, (rather than 'religion' or 'science', something like 'authors') and see how it works with subcats, cross cats, to design a uesful system. But right now, i'm just tryign to get the myth stuff under tow. my pet peeve is all the way "myth" is used (as in Myth busters). so i wanted to clean out our "myths and legends". i'm rambling. cause i'm on the bus. and almost asleep. god i'll be happy november 3rd.Pink mowse.pngGodotThe Peyote God awaits 23:59, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
We did start small, we were making subcats for US politicians. I'm a CS student, I like my categories following a clear hierarchy. Also felt that an article containing a subcat and the cat proper was redundant. I'm... not well liked among a certain group of people, and when I started moving pages out of the wrong categories... pow.TyTy 00:03, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Ahhh...the reason I am curious to relook at it, is cause i love the sidebars. but anyhow.... i'm watching the emmys. why? cause my hubby said so.Pink mowse.pngGodotThe Peyote God awaits 00:16, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Hotcat[edit]

Is your friend. TyTy 17:04, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

how do you use a hot cat, and do you have to know the cats before hand? I've seen you and others use it...Pink mowse.pngGodotThe Peyote God awaits17:06, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Hit your preferences, and look under gadgets. It has an auto complete feature.TyTy 17:07, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Ohh ahhh... i've had that the whole time, and had no idea what it was. Pink mowse.pngGodotThe Peyote God awaits17:10, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
The cats don't seem to cooperate any better when you know them beforehand, but those are cats for you. Then again, a hot cat is probably better than a hot dog. Blue (is useful) 17:10, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
This is how anal I am. I printed out the entire list of cats, tossed it into excel to dump all the techie stuff, then printed that list to have at reference. Then highlighted in blue all the religious ones. This is why I'm a paid researcher. cause i'm stupid anal about organisation and correct categorization of crap.Pink mowse.pngGodotThe Peyote God awaits 17:13, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Cookie half.jpg For demonstrating exemplary goatery in the line of duty, Sandy Claws
has awarded you a used pre-owned! and slightly stale cookie.
Ewwwwwww.
Cockroaches ate half of it.
I can find a cookie recipe so you can make your own non-digital ones. ADK...I'll widen your cubicle! 07:20, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Oh, wants cookies! real ones. Stress says "eat cookies". In all honesty, part of it was to keep myself from jumping into the whole "mod" fray. I fundamentally disagree with much of what is going on, yet at the same time, I think "what is going on" feeds on itself, the more players play. so for me,the best answers is to ignore it, and just work. Cause I'm never going to change anything, and the site needs to find its own path. Besides, as i said, work is way stressful, i'm already way way too fat, and all i want to do is eat cookies. so virtual ones, and editing are better. :P --Pink mowse.pngGodotThe Peyote God awaits 12:29, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Holy book cat[edit]

There is category:Scriptures...TyTy 20:53, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Oh, and userspace pages shouldn't be in categories for main.TyTy 20:54, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Was botted. Oops. TyTy 20:55, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, i was actually meaning a sidebar! I've recat-ed upanishads, but it made me think we need a nice side bar for all our juicy non-bible scriptures. we have Tao, we have karma sutra, and the qu'ran, etc. Also, we need a side bar for cults. we have tons of those, too. :-)Pink mowse.pngGodotThe Peyote God awaits20:56, 21 September 2011 (UTC) :::As for the user space, i didn't know and didn't want to offend by deleting it. there are several users with "religion" main space cats.Pink mowse.pngGodotThe Peyote God awaits20:56, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Sidebars will work. I'll make a few, but I really suck at color choice. (Scriptures, Hinduism, and cults okay?)TyTy 21:02, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
I suck at the humor. if you are in a funny mood, i made a more-or-less "placeholder" for "biblical figures" template:bibfig, but i have no idea how to make it goaty. As for the others, i'm not sure we have enough articles for hinduism and buddhism, but we might do "eastern religions" with a perm link to hinduism and buddhism.Pink mowse.pngGodotThe Peyote God awaits 21:08, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
...and I just made Hinduism. I'll give it a shot.TyTy 21:10, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Eastern religion...I only liked them for the stories.--Dumpling (talk) 21:14, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
I don't even know the stories. It's my biggest weakness in school. I studied it, but just well enough to pass tests. Had a great class "The Body in East Asia", which was based on a friend's phd dissertation. It did have a fun look at eastern religions. :-) MOther-in-law is forever telling me i need to go to the Temple. Course, Vietnamese Buddhism is very god centered, for an 'atheist' religion. ;-)Pink mowse.pngGodotThe Peyote God awaits 21:16, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Hinduism and scriptures are made. Have at!TyTy 21:20, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
