WIGO CP maintenance[edit]

I know you are running capturebot - although it seems you have to do some of the work manually. PITA as it is, can you get some critter to move the "earlier edits" header up each night/day so editing the recent wigos is easier? (Not that you aren't, but I just edited the "recent" section and it took forever to load. Might have been other causes of course). I still have sores from when I used to move that thing manually myself each day... It also looks like some stripping to the archives is due - is trent's old tool broken, do we have to do it manually for now? Thanks! ħumanUser talk:Human 00:19, 31 March 2009 (EDT)

When we upgrade to MediaWiki 1.13 (assuming 1.14 isn't out by then) we should be able to set API-write for bots. Because bots don't edit through a browser they edit quickly. I will have Pi try to reprogram me so the when I run I automatically place the edit section after the first 5 WIGOs (that 5 would include any edit out ones). Capturebot 00:25, 31 March 2009 (EDT)
Cool.
PS, thanks for the gratuitous meta edit to archive 1 WIGO ASK talk. PS, you might want to archive your talk page, too! (I'm binging today, that's 3 big archives so far I think I've done). ħumanUser talk:Human 02:08, 4 April 2009 (EDT)
I was saving it up to give something to test pibot on. I have already written a script to go back through all the WIGO CP talk archive and place the {{talkpage}} at the top of each article. Hopefully when the upgrade takes place (it is going to be to MW 1.14), I should have somemore bots running around doing the routine work. - User 03:35, 4 April 2009 (EDT)
Could you take a look at my proposal about fully automating capturebot here? --  Nx/talk  04:12, 4 April 2009 (EDT)

Chuck[edit]

Not sure why Chuck's comments rate keeping any more than if, say, Fall Down had left a comment. Secret Squirrel 19:34, 8 April 2009 (EDT)

I have all Fall down's comment that were posted on the talkpage, other than when he blanked it. My basic point is that if you remove comments where someone was needlessly insulting, such as Chuck was there, you look like you can't handle people saying thing to you. However by leaving them their people are going to come along and go "what the hell was that about" and probably think it was disproportional to anything you did, which it was. More than anything I like archives, do you want the services of my bot when it is finished? - User 19:41, 8 April 2009 (EDT)
I know this isn't Wikipedia but the standard practice there is to delete if somebody leaves a personal attack on your talk page. Not sure why we go the opposite extreme here, or what purpose it serves; is it because of Andy's usual practice on CP of deleting anything on his talk page that isn't from a toady, so we do the opposite and keep everything forever? Secret Squirrel 19:59, 8 April 2009 (EDT)
I think that is the logic. I really not fussed, if you want to remove the comments I won't revert again. - User 20:04, 8 April 2009 (EDT)
I'll just leave it. No big deal. As I said elsewhere my personal preference is to use user talk pages for current communication, and to let old, no longer current stuff scroll off after a few months (as opposed to articles, which are meant to be expanded and built on indefinitely). I kinda find the idea of keeping user talk page stuff forever creepy along the same lines as somebody logging IRC conversations and posting them publicly, or if all those old BBS posts from 1980s Fidonet were resurrected and posted online. Secret Squirrel 20:21, 8 April 2009 (EDT)
Please excuse this unwated attack on your space, PI. But I want to state that I was not just attacking out of the blue. My response, while not as mature as I would like to appear, was done in anger to SS's personal attack on me "irChuckB, get the hell off this site and go suck up at Daily Kos." Again, not that this excuses or makes my response look any better, but I just wanted to say it. SirChuckBA product of Affirmative Action 17:06, 9 April 2009 (EDT)
Its okay Chuck I know it was one part of a multiparty fight that went over several pages. Why are we rehaving this argument again? - User 05:01, 10 April 2009 (EDT)

I've got a little problem with capturebot 2: When the size of a page reaches 32767 () pixels, the rendering hangs (http://www.conservapedia.com/Talk:Main_Page/archive64#Pokiston causes this, since Capturebot 2 renders the whole page). I've noticed that Capturebot cuts out the diffs and only uploads that, how is that done? And what would it do with the Pokiston link? --  Nx/talk  16:04, 9 April 2009 (EDT)

Well here is what current Capturebot did with the Pokiston link. says to me be a storage problem; can you find any extension or modules that allow for arbitrarily large numbers in the program you are using? What Capturebot does is if it finds a table with the class "diff" it will capture only that, have a look at the source code for Kens latest insignificant edit. - User 20:13, 9 April 2009 (EDT)
It's a Qt or Webkit limitation, unfortunately there's nothing I can do about it (except increase the width so the height is lower, but what if the page gets even larger...). The diff shouldn't be a problem, but there's no way to avoid this other than to take two images. Maybe combining them would be possible. --  Nx/talk  03:32, 10 April 2009 (EDT)

ARJ[edit]

A good compromise for the ARJ article would be to archive previous volumes, but keep the current volume in the article. That way, there is always new content in the article, but it doesn't get overly long. Thoughts?Sterilewalkie-talkie 11:36, 10 April 2009 (EDT)

HowTheWorldWorks, CSE Ministry, VenomFangX, and JezuzFreek777[edit]

How The World Works is still more of a nut in regards to government, civics and the economy, and has very little so far in the way of science. He is becoming a more prominent user, so I don't know whether he should warrant the start of a page yet. Eric Hovind has taken over the work of his father on YouTube, since his father, Kent Hovind, is serving a prison sentence. The CSE Ministry I'd suggest is a big target for an article. As is VenomFangX and possibly JezuzFreek. If any of these are fine, tap me on my talk page to work on them in the near future. --Irrational Atheist 01:23, 14 April 2009 (EDT)

These are all great examples and probably worthy of articles, we'll create them and see what happens with them. Do we have a page on YouTube yet? No looks red. - User 01:35, 14 April 2009 (EDT)
Their pages are started. Feel free to add the YouTube page, and clean up the category. I'll work on something when I have more time. Tonight I just had nothing else to do. --Irrational Atheist 02:14, 14 April 2009 (EDT)
That is great, I wasn't expecting you to start them right away like that. I'll have a look at them and I am sure Human will be along to copy edit them soon. Thanks for all that work. - User 02:19, 14 April 2009 (EDT)
I got bored between classes at school (boredom is a common thing in my life!) and spent many an hour on YouTube finding things to entertain me. I found Thunderf00t and DonExodus, which linked up to all those people (including Tony48219). Then there are people who are active elsewhere, such as Brent A. Mortimer, a creationist who creates sockpuppets to support his own threads (and sometimes even debates with them!) and repeats verbatim people like Behe. But since he is more of a troll rather than someone with a pulpit, he may not be on-mission. --Irrational Atheist 02:26, 14 April 2009 (EDT)
I wonder if he is related to Ken, he use to do the sockpuppet thing in between not answering questions on forums. - User 02:27, 14 April 2009 (EDT)

I must ask, because I really just don't understand: why does anyone listen, subscribe, or so much as care what any of these random shits has to say (excepting Hovind, who has a batshit organization behind him). Why would anyone spend so much as ten minutes listening to some random guy on YouTube spouting ill-conceived creationist arguments, then again subscribe to their channel? PubliusTalk 02:45, 14 April 2009 (EDT)

I guess it is like Conservapedia or WorldNetDaily; either because the viewpoint is so fringe there is little where else you can get it, so if you believe it in which case you lap it up; or you are sitting there going "what the fuck is this guy on about" and out shear fascination you keep watching. Unfortunately I suspect the former more than the latter when it come to subscribers. - User 02:51, 14 April 2009 (EDT)

How Do I Bump a WIGO?[edit]

Or should I? I don't want to blow the guy's cover. Jorge 21:54, 22 April 2009 (EDT)

Bump usually means push it up the list. I am assuming you are concerned about the content of a WIGO. WIGOs are sometimes commented out using <!-- <vote poll=wigoX>Stuf</vote> --> the end bits are the wiki commenting system. The problem with running a sock is that people here are watching and if you do something lulz worth it gets WIGOed. I had a scok which managed to escape two WIGOings, only getting blocked when Andy noticed the wandalism about 3 months later when he was beginning to become trusted. Bad luck that, I should have had a different account. You need to play it safe, going and editing WIGO now will only confirm that you are him. Ease your sock back, don't disrupt your editing pattern too much, just make it look like you are busy for a few days and when you are safe go back to work. - User 22:02, 22 April 2009 (EDT)
If an old wigo is what you mean (someone edited an archive a while ago, was it you?) just start a new section on Talk WIGO & it'll be noticed. ToastToastand marmite 22:06, 22 April 2009 (EDT)
Its not me its the guy who reverted Assfly's edit. Though I suppose he could just be an idiot. I made an UPDATE: so I'll leave someone else to decide if its bumpworthy. Jorge 22:19, 22 April 2009 (EDT)
This is an interesting question. Sure, we "UPDATE", but the stuff still slides down into history. One good solution that Toast pointed out is to yack about it on talk:WIGO. Another that sometimes happens, although it can be ugly if too recent, is to start another WIGO. The current set-up is more of a "news feed" than a "forum" interaction. ħumanUser talk:Human 22:29, 22 April 2009 (EDT)

Why do you hate parody?[edit]

Like this? --JJ4eI christen thee Sir Annoyz Alot 02:54, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

It was an article about PJR that was mostly full of arguments he had with Bugler. As Bugler was a parodist it makes it look false. Also the article is about PJR, not how funny Bugler was. - π 03:02, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, but not everything you deleted. May I put it back? Thanks.--JJ4eI christen thee Sir Annoyz Alot 03:10, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Still giving the same errors, looks like the fix didn't work, as I suspected. I really have no idea what's wrong... --  Nx/talk  09:11, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
Okay I am working on a work around for WIGOCP. - π 09:14, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Didn't mean to revert you unnecessarily, but on a high traffic page, you should "create" the new page before adding the red link. All is good now, of course. ħumanUser talk:Human 03:23, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

That's okay. Capturebot should run as prescribed now, we can put it back once Nx has fixed the problem. - π 03:26, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Exactly. Green = wrong! I like blue. Stop being wrong. ^.^User:Mei
What's good that's green? User:Mei
Chlorophyll. - π 02:44, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
You better not be one of those tree hugging liberal types. I like blue because its blue, but green isn't blue, so how do you work out it's better? User:Mei
Trees are nice; they give oxygen so I can live, they need chlorophyll to do this and chlorophyll is green, hence green is the source of all life. Therefore green is best. QED. - π 02:51, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Your reasoning is specious. Green is at best an accidental quality of the source of all life. Blue is nicer because it is the SKY. Deny this and lose credibility. User:Mei
The sky is blue is the incidental result of Rayleigh scattering and doesn't even affect life on earth, except the light is not quite as blue down here on the surface. It is as obvious as 2+2=0 in the field . - π 03:04, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Sig[edit]

So is the new meme to change our sigs to "unsigned|foobar"? ħumanUser talk:Human 04:34, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

I think so, I did it the other day and since then a few have cropped up. I think Neveruse did it straight after I did and it has gone on from there. With the new template system for sigs it is easy to do now all you have to do is put {{unsigned|name}} into your preferences and it will dump the template instead of the code like it use to. - π 04:39, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Pibot archive destination[edit]

If I omit the archive parameter, will it default to what the talkpage template expects? Also the instructions should be more clear about this, I can see people copying the template without modifying that parameter. --  Nx/talk  08:09, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

It doesn't default, although I guess I should fix it so it does. I will clear that up in the instructions. - π 08:11, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. --  Nx/talk  08:19, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Okay got that sorted, I will also reduce the default archive length to 250K, the pages look weird if they get longer than that any way. - π 08:22, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Protecting my talk page archive borked Pibot, can you run it again please? --  Nx/talk  10:31, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

I did and it borked again. I'll have to look at what it is doing. - π 10:32, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Looks like it's the ignoring parameters, which would mean that omitting the archive parameter means /dev/null. --  Nx/talk  10:39, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Was it the spaces or changing the counter? Also, it's now displaying an archive list, despite there only being 2 archive pages... --  Nx/talk  10:58, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
I don't know it started working with a 2, maybe it didn't like the 1 for some reason. That archive list I created if you vap it the numbers will reappear. - π 11:00, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
I didn't notice you creating that page, I thought it was Pibot. Archive 1 was over the max size I set, but it should be able to handle that. --  Nx/talk  11:07, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
At the end of the run it checks the page size and the adjust the counter itself if it is over the threshold. - π 11:09, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Then it must've been the spaces. Anyway, nice work getting it up and running. Is it run manually, or can it run continuously on its own? --  Nx/talk  11:20, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
It is manual. I have used Misza's script from the pywikipedia bot stuff. If you could find away of running it continuosly off the server that would be even better. - π 11:21, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
We could put it into a cron job I guess. It doesn't need to run every minute, and it's easier that way. --  Nx/talk  11:25, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

What is now Andrew Layton Schlafly/Archive2 used to be Andrew Schlafly/Archive1, the archive was not moved when the page was moved. The dpl doesn't look at the number order it looks at the order they were created, as Andrew Layton Schlafly/Archive2 was created before Andrew Layton Schlafly/Archive1 it places them in that order. - π 02:35, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Is pretty much the definition of administrative abuse. I hope it dies out (very) rapidly now, thanks for chiming in on it. ħumanUser talk:Human 00:36, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

I was getting kind of annoyed at seeing him blocked or vandal binned every other day. We need to give these sysop a little more training. - π 00:42, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
Maybe we should restrict blocking to sysops (as in, one can only block them), since we have the vandal bin, and no real issues that require blocking... ħumanUser talk:Human 02:19, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Enlighten me on this please.[edit]

The revert on the AOTW Nav template is based on "It was agreed to let that one die, please check previous dicussions before making decisions". At least in this part of the discussion people have leave the option open to revival of interest (specifically point to (maybe quoting out of context) the quotes of RA and Human). I would kindly ask you to point to the portion of the discussion that led to the decision of letting it die (Well, it's kind of a catch-22 if it is difficult for people to get to it to see if they are interested in reviving it). [[User:K61824|]][[User_talk:K61824|]] 01:37, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

It was probably back on Main page talk when we use to use that for all discussions. No body liked the 4th Reich on when we launched RW 3.0 in July last year. - π 01:40, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
It dropped of that template just after it dropped off the main page here. If you want to reinstate it bring it up on the nav template talkpage. - π 01:47, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, RW 7.3 doesn't need no emphasis of neo-nazis... ħumanUser talk:Human 02:22, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
It is funny looking back on a conversation where 3 people would constitute a consensus. I would be 5 these days. - π 02:25, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your heroic work on the side by side and links[edit]

Now that all those links are in there, I'm sort of daunted by the project having realized I was referring to the wrong "Lazarus Bacteria" in #2. But we'll get it together - thanks again for putting the links in there and getting the side by side working. Nutty Roux100x100 anarchy symbol.svgUser:Nutty Roux/sigtalk 03:37, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

That's okay. - π 03:48, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

I don't see how we are similar?[edit]

I'm sorry but I must really question how you can think we are similar. Its users like yourself which I rage about here.

As for me appearing to be an arrogant dick - well, frankly, I don't give a damn. I'm not, for the record, an arrogant dick in real life. The internetz and RL are two different beasts. And the internet is full of people who are full of it and who need a shot back to reality. I don't claim I'm something special, I just question others assumptions. If I do it with a lot of over the top rhetoric then so be it. I haven't, to my knowledge, ever broadcast that I consider myself to be some intellectual genius. That is entirely the assumptions of others here. MarcusCicero2 13:57, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

I didn't say we are similar, I said to a certain extent I agree with you, probably more than most other people here. You clearly are not a great intellect if you can't tell the difference. You are also a very angry man. How often do you question your own assumptions? Isn't "the internet is full of people who are full of it and who need a shot back to reality", an assumption that needs examining, especially if you don't count yourself in this group? You also often claim you don't take the internet seriously, then why are you so offended when people call you a dick? - π 01:48, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
Hey, just to clarify, MC got really annoyed when I accused him of having no dick. Not actually being a dick himself. Ace McWickedDisco Jesus 02:19, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
Well dicks do not themselves have dicks, so I don't think there is an inherent contradiction there. - π 03:30, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
"I heard that motherfucker had, like, thirty goddamn dicks." --Kels 03:33, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

1) I was not offended by Ace. I just found it to be a bizarre and random insult, probably something to do with his own insecurities about penis size. 2) I don't take the internet seriously. 3) I'm not angry, thats just my writing style. 4) I often question my own assumptions. I am not fault proof by any stretch of the imagination. But questioning others assumptions is quite consistent with not questioning your own anyway. A 7 year old autistic child can question others assumptions, even if he is unable to question his own.

So yeah. Pretty nonsense points your dragging up to be honest. MarcusCicero 10:03, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Why, if you do not take the internet seriously, are you here defending yourself? - π 10:06, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
People can defend themselves without taking the internet seriously. And can you really be this obtuse? MarcusCicero 10:08, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
Wow. Epic troll is epic. Seriously. MC, you only whine at RW in places where some fun can be made of us, and ignore the rest? I think Ace might actually be correct in his characterization of you. ħumanUser talk:Human 05:23, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
Of course Ace is correct. I have to go out for dinner now but all should know I am correct and MC has no penis. Ace McWickedDisco Jesus 05:44, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Human what the fuck are you talking about? 'you only whine in places where some fun can be made of us'... You been smoking the long pipe again? Thats just a retarded fucking non-statement. MarcusCicero 08:35, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Human, please see a professional. You sound like a hysterical retard who's escaped from his hospital bed. Take it easy. MarcusCicero 08:42, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
MC, thank you for your carefully considered response. PS, where is the secret cabal where you mock the internet for being wrong, again? ħumanUser talk:Human 08:48, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
Human, I really struggle to see how you can wake up every morning and insist on being this obtuse. MarcusCicero 08:52, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

IP range blocks.[edit]

I have been going through the logs of the range blocks, and putting them into the Conservapedia:blocking the planet. This is insanely labor-intensive, of course—TK can block faster than I can run whois and track down. Be that as it may, I'm trying to categorise things according to schools, companies, municipal ISP's, etc.

Now the Conservapedia:IP_blocks page has a lot of this stuff also. What would you think of moving the specific instances (this school, that gov't office, ...) over to "blocking the planet", and having "IP blocks" just list the general phenomenon, statistics, graphs, etc? Gauss 04:54, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Sounds good. You need help? Over the weekend I'll see about pulling data out of the block log, see if we can find away of matching large companies to blocks. TK's block comments are pretty unreliable. I thought I had a clean IP address I was saving for a rainy day, it was registered to Alice Springs; however I wanted to check it and it was blocked with the comment about it being Vietnam IP address. I started looking into the range (/16) and found that, parts of it were registered all over South-East Asia and the Pacific. TK's big problem is he a dinosaur, he still seems to think the old class networks exist. - π 05:02, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
"Blocking the planet" is a much better title, I'd vote for moving all the info there? ħumanUser talk:Human 05:33, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

I've done a lot of preliminary work, so we should try not to duplicate effort. Here's the situation. A while back, when I saw that range blocking was exploding, I collected the block logs from 14:20, 17 August 2008 to 19:32, 9 April 2009. (9 April was the instant I collected it.) I then ran some Emacs macros etc. over that, to separate the wheat from the chaff. I figured I would process it all, and then be able to keep up with further developments in real time. Being lazy, this didn't happen. Then, just yesterday, I couldn't stand it any more, so I did some "real time" processing of (let's see, my notes say ...) 2100-2332, 11 June 2009. So, if we're going to do this, we have to "harvest" 9 April to 2100, 11 June, and then continue to harvest later material in real time.

It's really rather time-consuming. TK really can block faster than we can WIGO! Assuming that the task involves verifying the IP with whois, making a nice permalink to the block event, categorizing it correctly, and so on. And the exact structure of the "blocking the planet" page may need to be tweaked. That's why I was all over the place yesterday, adding sections on companies, municipal ISP's, schools, and so on. I'd suggest we not worry about polishing the structure until we have some idea what's in each category, and just how we want to present them.

My proposed criterion is that we not include obvious commercial anonymizing proxies, since those really are forbidden by CP. But it's often hard to tell the difference. If in doubt, include it. A proxy from a company is often just that. TK pretends not to know that companies use "firewall proxies" all the time.

And, of course, we must not take TK's word for anything in his block comments.

I can send my file of August to April, if anyone wants to work on it. I suspect that going earlier than August 2008 is pointless. The file is about 830 lines. It still has anonymizing proxies that need to be investigated.

Gauss 12:47, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

As an example of identifying anonymizing proxies, look at this, blocked at 18:21, 9 April 2009: [1] TK says it's an anonymizing proxy. I'm inclined to believe him, given that it's a collection of huge ranges out of the IP registry, but not assigned to a company. Do you agree?

Gauss 13:00, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Well it says it is registered to Uninet Mexico S.A. de C.V., this is all I could find on them. A search for Uninet itself brings up a lot of Google noise. - π 13:10, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
Uninet seems to be an imaging/printing company. It's commercial, not an anonymizing proxy. Gauss 04:44, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
So why does TK block a Mexican printing shop? - π 05:52, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
My company has recently moved to ATT for internet content filtering so my apparent work IP is thousands of miles away in a totally different country. Redchuck.gif ГенгисIs the Pope a Catholic? 08:01, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Botserver[edit]

So, did you port Pibot to the botserver? Nx 15:02, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

Not yet, what is involved and how does the server handle errors? - π 23:31, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
I think you just ask Trent to do it, and send him a copy. He runs a second machine along with the wiki server, which is essentially a visitor to RW that runs bots to avoid them chewing up the CPU and RAM on the server. ħumanUser talk:Human 00:00, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Pibot[edit]

Can you run it again to clean up talk:wigo cp? Also, I thought it archived any thread older than x, does it get stuck if thread #1 can't be archived? What I mean is, does it look at each thread separately, when making its intelligently designed decisions? ħumanUser talk:Human 02:18, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

I ran it several times this morning (still is am where I live) trying to add a new feature, anything there is less than 3 days old. It grabs any thread regardless of their location on the page, it doesn't grab them in order. - π 02:21, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
OK, thanks for the confirmation. I thought the top one after I archived the 100M thing looked older, but I didn't look hard. ħumanUser talk:Human 02:38, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Remove from articles, OK; remove from talk pages, no. Let them look stupid, we don't mind hosting that. Also, we prefer to keep our records, however stupid some people (me) might be at times. ħumanUser talk:Human 05:41, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

But I put in a spelling error, didn't take one out. Perhaps I did it wrong, or it wasn't funny. Or something. I did it because "foreign" is a word that isn't intuitive to spell, so spelled it forein. Tarantallegra (talk) 09:28, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
