[edit] Rhodopsin bleaching
There was a pamphlet the US Army published in the 1940s about how to make best use of night vision, and one of the chapters was titled "Gained in an Hour, Lost in a Minute" mentioning the use of red lighting and red goggles in some tactical situations. Other tricks included keeping a scan going, paying attention to the peripheral field, and practising with light-colored objects in a darkened room. To this day, if I need to light up a room in the middle of the night, I keep one eye closed so I can still see after shutting the light off again.
