[edit] A comment regarding your friend.

In response to your question here, my short acquaintance with the fellow suggests he is the sort of person who craves attention the way some people crave heroin or meth. If he can't get positive attention he will do something strange and provocative to get negative attention. All that matters is that he gets attention. The quandary is that some of the things he does can't simply be ignored, but by responding to him in any way at all (whether to agree or smack him down) you're playing his game. Doctor Dark (talk) 03:45, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. Acei9 04:12, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

[edit] John Nash

Saw a movie last nite starring New Zealander Russel Crowe about Nobel Laureate wp:John Nash. Researching Nash made me think about you:

I later spent times of the order of five to eight months in hospitals in New Jersey, always on an involuntary basis... In these interludes of, as it were, enforced rationality, I did succeed in doing some respectable mathematical research....But after my return to the dream-like delusional hypotheses in the later 60's I became a person of delusionally influenced thinking but of relatively moderate behavior and thus tended to avoid hospitalization and the direct attention of psychiatrists.

Perhaps RW could use an entry on Nash. According to WP, his theories are used in market economics, computing, evolutionary biology, artificial intelligence, accounting, politics, military and game theory. nobsCorporations are people, too 17:23, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Russel Crowe has been disowned by NZ. Acei9 19:41, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
Well, Crowe's portrayal of Nash is convincing, if not exceptional (even under the direction of that commie Ron Howard). But Nash is the object here, with "enforced rationality...I became a person of delusionally influenced thinking but of relatively moderate behavior ...", describes perfectly your Rationalwiki career. I'm sure you can relate. nobsCorporations are people, too 00:19, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
You're only saying Ron Howard is a commie because he has red hair. Acei9 00:24, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
No, I heard him apologize on the Tonight Show because when he was 8 years old he once made a TV appearance with Ronald Reagan. Normally this type of irrational behavior would be considered psychotic, but in this case it appears he's just a typical hardcore, hate-filled communist. nobsCorporations are people, too 02:16, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Many of things you say should be considered psychotic. Acei9 02:19, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
BFD, it wouldn't preclude a person from being a Nobel Laureate, or for that matter getting millions of dollars in government contracts and being a CEO of a Fortune 500 company. nobsCorporations are people, too 02:29, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
What does this have to do with Nash or Russel Crowe? Acei9 02:37, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Jus' sayin'. delusionally influenced thinking but of relatively moderate behavior describes you pretty good of late within the confines and structure of Rationalwiki's enforced rationality. You wanna collaborate on Nash or not? 02:57, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Ace quote

"In NZ there is no culture of tipping and we pay people properly. You yanks are fucked up. Ace 9 4:22 pm, Yesterday (UTC−6)"

Love it. Reckless Noise Symphony (talk) 08:28, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

It is an adequate summary of the situation I agree. Hell, once in Florida I got told off for not tipping properly. The waitress actually came back to the table and told me it "wasn't good enough". Acei9 19:52, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
I, myself, have never liked the idea of waitstaff making most of their wages based on tips. In my state, at least, they make a base salary of, at least, just above minimum wage (I think we are the only state in the US left, IIRC) and get any tips you've earned added on to that (whether those be tips of money of tips to fuck off, nobody cares), but I'm always amazed that most other states tie whether or not you can afford food to how generous the customers are feeling that night (i.e: pay well below minimum wage), which causes waitstaff to go insane about making tips at any cost and forces policies like "minimum tip required." Bunch of nonsense. Reckless Noise Symphony (talk) 10:12, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
In South Africa waiters get paid nothing but tips. Acei9 18:35, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

It's my understanding tipping is a Euro-centric tradition; I can only speculate why NZ hasn't continued it (poverty? unstable monetary supply? lack of empathy between social classes, etc.) But I sympathize greatly with Ace's experience in New York; you know them New Yorkers, damn greedy socialists & liberals with no compassion. nobsSay hello to my leetle friend 19:44, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

[edit] Got this one from my comedy forum

A NZ'er moves to Australia and is embarrassed by his nationality. He is particularly aware of his unmistakable accent. One day he walks into a shop and asks for "five dollars worth of FUSH and CHUPS".

The shopkeeper immediately replies "You're from New Zealand aren't you?" Embarrassed, the man runs out.

Determined to rid himself of his accent, he practices: "FISH and CHIPS, not FUSH and CHUPS," over and over again.

For months, he passes by the shop, but never goes in. Finally, he feels ready to show off his perfect Aussie accent. He confidently strolls up to the counter, clears his throat and in a perfect Australian accent says "Five dollars worth of FISH and CHIPS Please."

Immediately the shopkeeper replies "You must be from New Zealand."

"OH NO" the man cries. "This accent always betrays my nationality. I just cannot hide it."

"It's got nothing to do with accents, mate," replies the shopkeeper. "This is a hardware store".

[edit] Fox Geezer Syndrome

I'm not sure why you felt so strongly the page had to go. Several other progressive blogs have mentioned Fox Geezer Syndrome, including Slacktivist and Huffpo; and it was hardly the most irreverent or least notable entry on RationalWiki. Would you mind commenting on how I could have made the page more appropriate content for RW?

Thanks!

It's source is a single blog. Not really notable enough for it's own stand-alone article. Why don't you instead create a section under David Frum as he invented the term? Acei9 02:25, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
(EC) I'm not Ace, but I am prettier than he is. I suggest you add a section to the David Frum article. I was about to do this but Ace deleted it before I could get to it. Perhaps a bit of background of the disagreements between Fox and Frum should be added also (didn't he get banned from contributing on Fox after he had a dummy spit or something?). --DamoHi 02:26, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
I see. I don't think I'll bother creating it as a section under David Frum, since the general consensus on the talk page seems to be "who cares?" And anyway, I don't fancy rewriting the text from scratch. Thank you for taking the time to explain this to me; I'm not terribly familiar with the standards and practices of wikis, as you can probably tell. Heywood (talk) 20:27, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

How did you like it? Where did you go?

Tokyo, Nikko, Takayama, Fuji, Kyoto and Osaka. Loved it - had an awesome time. Are you a yank or a Brit, weasel? I'll be in London in a couple months and for some reason I thought you are from there. Acei9 07:11, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm a Brit, but not from London; I'm based in Nottingham. If there's a big RW happen-in going on in London, I can come down for that, but I think you said you're only gonna be in town for a couple of days in the middle of the week(?). Let me know.
I love Japan. Been there three times now, & it's definitely it's my favourite holiday destination (although expensive). Sounds like a good circuit you did. ЩєазєюіδWeaselly.jpgMethinks it is a Weasel 12:59, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Yeah it was expensive only in that for some reason going on holiday I always expect things to be cheaper than at home whereas Japan was like spending three weeks in a hotel back home and eating out for every meal. Now that Japan is done I need to find a new country to visit. I think (after my Europe trip in a few months) the wife and I might try Kenya. Or Turkey.
