So no permaban. Thats good. And is cracker leaving the mob? user talk:Bohdan 17:16, 16 January 2008 (EST)

Blogs[edit]

I messed with the appearance, and possibly broke it, but I don't think so. Still playing around. Wordpress's domain stuff is down, so I can't look up my domain mapping info, damn it.--PalMD-Did that sound a little harsh? 19:30, 17 January 2008 (EST)

Doesn't look broken to me. --Linus(plot evil tech) 20:01, 17 January 2008 (EST)

Following Linkage[edit]

Quick question - are all of RationalWiki's external links set to nofollow? Does that mean any and all spamvertising is ultimately in vain, google-wise? I had a spider crawl my user page a while back (when it was still covered in spamvertising), but it didn't end up where I wanted... I dunno if that's a function of nofollow links or just a function of me not understanding Google. Anyway, just wondering, if you could help explain that'd be great. UchihaKATON! 12:49, 14 January 2008 (EST)

Yeah, external links are, by default, nofollowed. --Linus(plot evil tech) 16:26, 14 January 2008 (EST)
Addition to my previous question - does that mean that all my spamvertising here is in vain? Also, due to Jimminy overruling the nofollow vote at Wikipedia, will spamvertising (and not being caught) succeed there? UchihaKATON! 16:30, 19 January 2008 (EST)

Template help[edit]

Icon fun.svg For those of you in the mood, RationalWiki has a fun article about Linus.

I gather that you are the go-to guy for the more technical aspects of the wiki? Well, regardless, I've created a template (here) for pointing readers towards a serious articles' equivalent Funspace article. I'm trying to make it appear on the right (as of now it orients to the left), but I don't know how the wiki-code works (what I do have I pilfered from other places). Any other tweaks you have for it would be welcomed. --Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 06:08, 22 January 2008 (EST) Nevermind, Linus. I want to make this "float", as well, so it doesn't push the start of text down a line. Any helpers? humanUser talk:Human 15:32, 12 February 2008 (EST)

This is utterly worthless. Let me take care of this… :). --Linus(plot evil tech) 15:51, 12 February 2008 (EST)
You know, I made this after I thought of asking you if there was a way to make just such a tab earlier today ;) In fact, I thought of searching MW to see if they had a workaround for this "bug" yet. Thanks! humanUser talk:Human 16:19, 12 February 2008 (EST)
You're quite welcome, sorry if my facetious aggression came across as serious… --Linus(plot evil tech) 16:32, 12 February 2008 (EST)
Oh, not at all. After all, I described it as being probably useless myself. The reason I had got to thinking about was when you popped that "edit new section" code on a debate page. The trouble with that method, of course, is it would require an arcane edit to the page to put the link on it, so I made a template without remembering to ask you (or search MW) if it could be done automagically. By the way, what was the actual technical fix? And does this mean Trent finally gave you the keys to the root sandbox password? humanUser talk:Human 17:06, 12 February 2008 (EST)
He actually did, but I simply edited MediaWiki:Common.js to include the JavaScript I had already put into personal use. --Linus(plot evil tech) 18:54, 12 February 2008 (EST)
Sweet. Hey, why not ditch the margin between "0" and "+" as well? Can you do that? Seems to make sense. humanUser talk:Human 19:57, 12 February 2008 (EST)

Hmmm, and yet you added it ;) When I looked at it out of curiosity, it seemed well-commented, and there was a comment about a line that kills the margin between "edit" and "0". It's no biggie, I'd rather get my insta-ref button! humanUser talk:Human 16:06, 17 February 2008 (EST)

Edit counter[edit]

A recent conversation on my talk page brought up the fact that we don't have an edit counting device. Editor at CP expressed thought it would be nice to have one, and so do I. If it's not too much trouble, is there a mediawiki extension for this? WP has that, too, so I suspect it's a basic MW feature. What's more interesting is to see the namespaces involved as well. But, yeah, that is still cool. This is edit #15,995... humanUser talk:Human 12:29, 19 February 2008 (EST)

Okay, so I've returned. I profusely apologize for my abrupt departure, I was, at that moment, informed that the time had come for me to embark on a journey that pretty well took care of my ability to use the Internet for the majority of the day, although it was otherwise a good thing. Trent, I'm sorry to have bothered you, and everyone else, I'm immensely apologetic for the inconvenience. I'll attempt to avoid situations of that nature in the future. --Linus(plot evil tech) 22:28, 19 February 2008 (EST)

Long-winded request for bug fix[edit]

It seems that since you installed the edit count extension, whenever I submit an edit, I get logged out automatically. The edit still appears in my name, but I have been magically logged out and if I want any subsequent edits to appear in my name, I have to log back in. In the debate, essayspace, and talk pages this is particularly noticable, and I have witnessed several IPs seemingly editing other, registered users' posts, when it is probably that same user who doesn't realize (or doesn't care) they have been logged out. Any way to fix this? --Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 13:47, 20 February 2008 (EST)

Not so for me, but I too get regularly logged out, maybe once a day. Editor at RWSchumi on Ducati? 13:51, 20 February 2008 (EST)
Okay, I'll see what the deal is… --Linus(plot evil tech) 19:49, 20 February 2008 (EST)
Brianetta has pointed out that the logout problem seems to be assiciated with editing http://www.rw.com and then getting returned to http://rw.com - if you aren't logged in to *both*, when you come back to http://rw.com, you are logged out.
He says that if you are logged into both, you stay "logged in". humanUser talk:Human 12:56, 22 February 2008 (EST)
That's kind of bizarre, but I'll look at it. I thought it had to do with being redirected to http://rationalwiki.com/wiki/index.php/Example instead of http://rationalwiki.com/wiki/Example, but I could quite possibly be wrong. --Linus(plot evil tech) 15:43, 22 February 2008 (EST)

When it's done, place the following line in it:

Next question[edit]

How is your mysql? tmtoulouse heckle 17:38, 24 June 2008 (EDT)

Fairly good, I believe… You mean my SQL skills, or my MySQL administration ones? --λινυσ() 17:46, 24 June 2008 (EDT)
Here is the challenge then. Basic table structure is something like this:
NameDateSome Data
George2008-06-1947
George2008-06-2048
George2008-06-2149
John2008-06-1940
John2008-06-2041
John2008-06-2142
Mary2008-06-1930
Mary2008-06-2041

How do you query this database to return only the most recent date and data per name. Attempted queries have included:

select * from table group by Name having date=max(date);

This doesn't return duplicate tables at all.

select distinct name, max(date),data from table;

this returns only one name, the max date but does not link the data column to the date.

Any ideas? tmtoulouse heckle 17:53, 24 June 2008 (EDT)

I don't know if it's possible to achieve this via raw SQL, you may have to run it through some sort of secondary program. Don't believe me, though, I need to brush up on my (My)SQL. It seems to me, though, that this is not something that SQL is well-suited to. Off the top of my head, what you would want to do is break it up into individual names, and then select the greatest dates from each set. --λινυσ() 18:01, 24 June 2008 (EDT)

Yea I might try some subqueries next, but subquery structure gives me a headache. tmtoulouse heckle 18:03, 24 June 2008 (EDT)

Since you say you tend towards libertarianism, what keeps you from becoming a Libt?

And while you're at it, seo2727 and yesido are possibly splogs as well. ThunderkatzHo! 18:01, 3 September 2008 (EDT)

Done. RB seems to have become a target for spammers, aggravatingly enough. --λινυσ() 18:43, 3 September 2008 (EDT)

Insanely cute[edit]

Entirely so. I think that perhaps the best description of it is "d'awwwwwwww! :3", or something to that effect. --λινυσ() 18:23, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
I think the W in the name makes it cuter still. New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 18:27, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
I thoroughly concur. This is my new favorite icon. --λινυσ() 18:30, 6 September 2008 (EDT)

Something is wrong[edit]

That's what you said on the WIGO CP page, but your link doesn't actually say what is wrong, it's just a permalink to the whole page. I know the whole thing's wrong, but can you be a little more specific? --Kels 18:18, 7 September 2008 (EDT)

That doesn't help as much as you'd think, we already know there's something wrong with Andy. Do you mean his obsession with Obama? Do you mean jumping on the "my Muslim faith" thing? Do you mean sticking all the smears in the lede? Most of that isn't terribly new, help me out here. --Kels 18:28, 7 September 2008 (EDT)
I changed it to a couple diffs before when he added the "Muslim faith" quote, since that seemed to be what was intended. Did that help? ħumanUser talk:Human 19:33, 7 September 2008 (EDT)
Well, I was kind of trying to point to the whole "OBAMA IS A MUSLIM" thing in general… --Cyan mowse 2.png λινυσ() 21:51, 7 September 2008 (EDT)

RationalBlogs is under attack![edit]

Well, kinda. But we're getting a lot more splogs: holmstroem - the diary of, Harrison Bellace, the blog of sergeeva, mignonsin cool things, my mindholmquist, and applebaugh - just another weblog. The following are probably splogs, but aren't known for sure: Jeramiah Heath, Jazzy Reading, Questionable Hackers, Douglas James, and seo2727. ThunderkatzHo! 19:41, 8 September 2008 (EDT)

Gaaaah! I'll have to close registration, I suppose… --Cyan mowse 2.png λινυσ() 21:58, 8 September 2008 (EDT)
Direct people to a page on here to request blogs. Would better integrate the two sites. 24.141.72.100 22:02, 8 September 2008 (EDT)
I'm thinking (again) of migrating my old blog to rationalblogs. I own the domain name, so I can redirect it, with the right info. The only traffic it really gets is when I refer to my old posts, but it would be nice to have it here rather than at WP.-- Asclepius staff.png-PalMD --Does this sig line make me look fat? 19:04, 1 October 2008 (EDT)

Another one!?[edit]

Is your name actually Linus? You're the second one I've come across online in as many days! Not counting myself, of course. I found one just the other day on Profane Existence! Keep the hope alive when Schultz's comics shall blight us no more...(echoes)....24.3.14.157 13:59, 1 October 2008 (EDT)

I think his real name is Linus. Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 15:15, 1 October 2008 (EDT)
(The original statement was by me, not realizing I hadn't logged in. Drinks and apologies all around). Radioactive, that's what I'm saying. It's just a very rare name, I've only come across 3 others in me whole bloomin' life! Harbinger 16:48, 1 October 2008 (EDT)
Yes, my real name is, indeed, Linus, and yes, I am named after the comic strip character. It's a rather long story. --Cyan mowse 2.png λινυσ() 17:00, 1 October 2008 (EDT)
Very cool, dude. We gotta form a league. I'm named after Linus Pauling, so I don't know if you win the namesake arguement. Time will tell. Harbinger 17:27, 1 October 2008 (EDT)
Another Linus? On RationalWiki? This is astonishing! Yes, we must form a league. --Cyan mowse 2.png λινυσ() 17:30, 1 October 2008 (EDT)

RBlogs[edit]

Is currently not what it was. Is this permanent? An accident? Que pasó? ThunderkatzHo! 21:43, 1 December 2008 (EST)

What do you mean "until recently"? Back to Judaism or now a full blown Christian? Or maybe you've seen the light and converted to the path of unbelief? Anyway, nice to see you back, do you feel up to upgrading the forum to the latest version of the software (not that many people visit it much any more). Redchuck.gif ГенгисRationalWiki GOLD member 22:39, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
The third. Anyway, I shall attempt to do so, if I get the password, and have time... My high school's senior thesis is due on the fourth. It's a bit of a nightmare. --Cyan mowse 2.png λινυσ() 23:07, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
Well make sure you have your priorities right. The forums have ground to a halt because of the outdated bb software. Redchuck.gif ГенгисRationalWiki GOLD member 23:16, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
You could've asked me to upgrade the forum... I always assumed people didn't care any more, so I didn't bother with it. -- Nx / talk 23:24, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
Pretty much my thoughts on the matter as well. tmtoulouse 23:26, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
Is it truly due to the older phpbb software? Anyway, good to see you Linus. Seeing as how we are no longer hosted on any of the machines you used to have access to I don't think you have any passwords anymore. If you are truly interested in picking up the forums as a project again let me know and we can work something out. tmtoulouse 23:20, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
I think the fora have been supplanted by the saloon bar. I am eating Toast& honeychat 23:22, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

By the way, the copyright status of our logo is rather mixed, while you are here do you think you could go ahead and release copyright "officially" over to me? tmtoulouse 23:23, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

You're missed[edit]

Gentle revered user, we have removed your bureacratship due to inactivity. This is because we don't want to confuse the N00bs who might be looking for someone who can help them with wiki issues. If you return, we will gladly reappoint you. We miss you, and will celebrate your return with many balloons!
