What happened to Tendrl?[edit]

What happened to to Tendrl? Have not been able to access the site for several days.LittleRedWriter (talk) 20:15, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

Really? I'm having no trouble accessing the site. Did you just receive a time-out? And at what time did you try to visit? Thomas Larsen (talk) 23:36, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
I'm seeing Tendrl fine from here. FreeThought (talk) 23:40, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
I have not been able to "see" Tendrl for about 5 days. All I get is a loading....LittleRedWriter (talk) 03:10, 29 November 2010 (UTC)
Works for me, the problem seems to be on your end LittleRedWriter. --Onion Hi! :) 03:30, 29 November 2010 (UTC)
That's very odd. Are you behind a firewall or proxy that might be blocking the site? Where are you trying to access Tendrl from? Thomas Larsen (talk) 03:38, 29 November 2010 (UTC)
I don't think so. I was able to view the site until Wednesday. After that nothing.LittleRedWriter (talk) 04:57, 29 November 2010 (UTC)
Can you view [1] without any problems? Thomas Larsen (talk) 05:27, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

(unindent)No luck. I get your connection has been reset. I'm sorry I can not access the web site. Don't know what happened.LittleRedWriter (talk) 00:27, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Animated gif[edit]

Wave.gif

That's weird, it works with stuff like this smiley... -- Nx / talk 09:12, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

The image is from Commons, so I suspect the problem has something to do with that. There's also another issue with animated-GIF scaling over at Knowino—I've asked for help on MediaWiki-L. Thomas Larsen (talk) 09:21, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, but I uploaded it locally and I did try new sizes to generate a new thumbnail, and it's still not working. -- Nx / talk 09:23, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
About your problem: try upping mediawikiwiki:Manual:$wgMaxShellFileSize, mediawikiwiki:Manual:$wgMaxShellMemory, mediawikiwiki:Manual:$wgMaxShellTime. -- Nx / talk 09:25, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
You can set the latter two to 0 to disable the limit, don't know if that works for the first one. -- Nx / talk 09:27, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
Ah, thanks for the pointers. I don't think the problem is caused by those variables being set to unreasonable limits, however—if you visit [2], you'll see that Test.gif comes in at a mere 532 B. I don't think it would need over ~100 MB of file space or over ~100 MB of virtual memory to resize a two-frame 100x100 GIF animation... ;-) Thomas Larsen (talk) 09:31, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
Well, we were having weird problems with svg thumbnailing (it wasn't actually complaining about insufficient memory), and setting the memory limit to 0 solved it. So it's worth a try, even if it sounds stupid. -- Nx / talk 09:36, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
I'd expect that from SVG scaling, but from a tiny GIF? *scratches head* At any rate, I'll give it a go—it'll take thirty seconds to check. Thomas Larsen (talk) 09:40, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, but the same SVG images were working fine on our old server, so I dunno. Anyway, try running the convert command manually. I think you need to activate debugging to get the exact command, then try running it under your user account, then under the wiki's user account. It's after this that I figured out the above variables were the source of the problem, because manually running the command worked in both accounts. -- Nx / talk 09:46, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
I'll give it a go. Thomas Larsen (talk) 09:48, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
I set $wgMaxShellTime and $wgMaxShellMemory to 0 and $wgMaxShellFileSize to something like 1000000, and then purged the File page and its talk page. No luck, sadly. (But thanks anyway—I'll keep these variables in mind for when I'm enabling SVG support...) Thomas Larsen (talk) 09:48, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
It's working now. -- Nx / talk 09:50, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
Btw, it looks like if you specify a larger size, it's not supposed to resize it server side. Makes sense, there's no point since the browser can resize it. -- Nx / talk 09:52, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
And now it's broken again (though the thumbnails that are already there are working), I guess you changed the variables back? -- Nx / talk 09:54, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── I purged both File:Normal mode of string.gif ([3]) and my user-page, and the animation is now displaying correctly on RationalWiki. :-) Thomas Larsen (talk) 09:35, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

That's funny, I edited your page and tried various random sizes to get a brand new thumbnail, and it didn't work. Oh well, thanks for fixing it :D -- Nx / talk 09:38, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
You're welcome. Thomas Larsen (talk) 09:48, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

I set $wgMaxShellMemory (and just $wgMaxShellMemory) to 0, and things seem to be working correctly now—well, almost correctly. Scaling is not working properly for GIF animations from external repositories, or so it seems. I'll wait to make sure things are, indeed, functioning properly before posting a message on MediaWiki-L. Thanks for your help—I greatly appreciate it. :-) Wave.gif Thomas Larsen (talk) 10:32, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
