RationalWiki's 2019 Fundraiser

There is no RationalWiki without you. We are a small non-profit with no staff – we are hundreds of volunteers who document pseudoscience and crankery around the world every day. We will never allow ads because we must remain independent. We cannot rely on big donors with corresponding big agendas. We are not the largest website around, but we believe we play an important role in defending truth and objectivity.

If everyone who saw this today donated $5, we would meet our goal for 2019.

Fighting pseudoscience isn't free.

My interest is dedicated only to some topics considered by RW, but not total (as, perhaps, an interest of all editors of this site). However, by asking some user and from my own initiation, I have almost literally and literally translated some of articles such as Christianity, RationalWiki, Creationism etc. Furthermore, EvoWiki can not be called "other site" and information in TalkOrigins is very close to content of EvoWiki.

Bertran (talk)01:39, 21 March 2011

Let him translate what he wants to translate. We're lucky to have him. Jesus Christ.

Considering EvoWiki is part of the RWF, and we have this. If we are porting over content from EvoWiki, why not translate it?

ТyTalk.01:54, 21 March 2011

Probably, it could be better to stop now and to wait the solution of mentioned above dilemma. Because problems like this will arise from time to time and I do not want to return to this discussion again and again.

Bertran (talk)12:32, 21 March 2011

I agree with both Tyrannis and Nutty here. There is nothing I can see that Bertran is doing wrong. In fact, I welcome his translation project with open arms.

Maybe, it would be better to make voting among the editors of RW pro or contra Russian section. And, of course, to make a separate domain.

Bertran (talk)14:40, 21 March 2011

Well you get my vote.

I'm with everyone else who fears what they can't read. We need to put a stop to this ridiculous multiculturalism.

Occasionaluse (talk)14:57, 21 March 2011

"Ridiculous multiculturalism"? Very interesting... But if you think so, let it be.

Bertran (talk)15:10, 21 March 2011

Ignore OccasionalUse. He's an entirely different kind of person. Entirely.

Punky Your mental puke relief15:11, 21 March 2011

I agree, let the project stay. In any event, I seem to recall us having exactly the same discussion before Bertran started and it was given the go-ahead then. At the end of the day, even if he is writing 'RW are a bunch of chicken fucking chumps' who's going to laugh at us, except some Ruskies.

Viva multiculturism viva!

PsyGremlinSprich!15:18, 21 March 2011

Sorry, Bertran, I thought you knew!

But seriously, if people have any issue with it on the grounds that they can't read Russian or can't verify it, the online translators are good enough to check that. As it happens, I've checked a few (paranoia) and found them to be perfectly fine. The project is a great idea and I think the project is more than worth continuing.

This problem is very significant that almost all of you (editors of RW) cannot check me. Of course, if somebody would claim that Russian articles contains a bullshit about RW and its editors, it would be very hard to disprove him. So, you must to trust me if you want to have a Russian section. But are you really able to do this? Seemly, everyone have specific answer to this question. And I don't now, what could be my decision, if, supposing, I am an administrator of some wiki and somebody wants to develop a Chinese section. Indeed, I don't understand Chinese at all, but, on the other hand, I must to check all, that have been written. Suppose, I trust this Chinese myself, but wiki is not a project of one man, it is a collective work and I must to explain, why do I trust him. Of course, his declarations that his work is consistent with the main goals is not enough: there will leave too much questions. And it will be not persuasively for others.

This problems seeming unsolvable at this time. So, I am very close now to living the project (at least, to stop developing a Russian section). When my decision will be a final, I'll claim this aside on my user page and on my talkpage. As it seems, "Russian RW" will continue its development at a free wiki-site. Maybe, in the future, if I'll develop it, we can share interwikies between similar articles of our projects. I think it would be the best way.

Please note:

I wouldn't worry about that too much. This place doesn't take itself too seriously and even if you do write something that is offensive to us, if we can't read it we won't know/care. Anyway we can get an approximation of the meaning using google translate.

I still don't think the project is a good idea, but then I appear to be in a minority of 1. Don't stop on account of me.

  1. I made my decision not because of your person, but because of your reasonable arguments.
  2. You are not alone. And it is obvious that will come some others.
