The answer to this is going to depend a little on what you mean by "early days". See RationalWiki:Timeline. Any idea of "ideological purity" would have been laughable in the earliest incarnations. For that matter I'm not sure that it's very relevant now.Bob"Life is short and (insert adjective)" 18:00, 16 March 2021 (UTC) | The answer to this is going to depend a little on what you mean by "early days". | + | :Vastly better, but still not great? The place has always been a mix of delightful and truly shitty, and has always brought the worst out in some people in ways it never had a mechanism for dealing with. Honestly, I'm probably not the right person to ask. I've never been a fan of RW's culture in general, particularly the painful fact that it has always self-selected a cohort of arrogant, officious weirdos who invariably shit the place up until they lose interest. I stuck around because I respected the mission and the direction content was going until I didn't. And I had some good friends here who made things pleasant. What Bob says about his experience back then rings true. I disagree that ideological purity testing isn't relevant now, but I have nothing further to say about it beyond the obvious point that ideological purity seems incredibly important to some of the loudest bullies trying so desperately to impose themselves son the site's culture — how relevant they are is another matter. In my early days, I would characterize the editorship as far less homogenous, far more competent and well-informed, far more capable of expressing joy and fellowship on a sitewide basis, and far more politic than now. NB it's unnecessary to tell me you've sent an email. I am unaware of any instance in which I haven't gotten one sent through RW.
As you might guess, there are generally 2.5 reasons I may not respond when you want me to:
- I'm ignoring you.
- Go away.
- I haven't checked my email.
Thanks. You're aces.

I agree with you...
But you can't bail because you and Ace are one of two people with a little bit of sense. The site needs you in order to either be turned around or dissolved. For starters, you're the one who correctly pointed out that ban policy wasn't being followed (and that most of the "ban evasion" blocks, including the "Morris" blocks, were based on fallacy because a lot of the users in question were never truly banned). So please don't go anywhere. 71.215.100.2 (talk) 22:38, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

For unbanning Mike
| Whack! You've been whacked with a wet trout. Don't take this too seriously. Somebody just wants to let you know you did something silly. |
See Talk:Jack Buckby. Mike left the same message multiple times while impersonating Jack Buckby, and now he's impersonating someone else after I locked the Jack Buckby talkpage. We know it's Mike because he created another account shortly after the first wave of Jack Buckby accounts (after the first time I locked the page, Chris unlocked it later and then I relocked it) which had a holocaust denying username and which he left the same message but referring to himself. Please look at the context around a ban before undoing it and hastily removing my mod powers. Plutocow (talk) 00:39, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
- It's not just me, it's been well established that this person is Mikey. Besides, far more people besides me ban ban evaders. Take it to the coop if you're serious about this. Plutocow (talk) 00:49, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
- Nothing about that account has been "well established". Far more people who ban ban evaders also abuse their user rights. This is an opportunity for you to learn something, You should take it. Nutty Roux (talk) 00:54, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
Here's another one just for good measure. MarioSuperstar77 (talk) 10:51, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

What was the site like in early days?
I joined the site when it was already quite old and never really saw the original state of the wiki. Was it less focused on idealogical purity testing than it is now? Commie Lib (talk) 05:29, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
- I've been at RW about a year longer than Nutty (not to detract from his history) and I'll tell you what. The site was never as litigious and offended as it is now. It's become less interesting and more offended. Because the adults left. AceSimple Maze 07:47, 15 March 2021 (UTC
- From a humor perspective, the website has become more entertaining. The absurdity level of editor behavior keeps increasing, while the usefulness of the website keeps going down. The website has become a sociological freak show. RationalWiki doesn't have as global of an editor base as Wikipedia, so Western leftism that is offended is more pronounced at RationalWiki.
- The fad of Western leftism that is offended is bound to have a shelf life, just like the ideological leanings of the former editor base had a shelf life. Goyathlay (talk) 10:42, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
- A fitting song about the early days of the wiki and the remaining old timers: "Once upon a time there was a wiki. A wiki where we promoted liberal modernism. Remember how we laughed away the hours and think of all the great things we thought we would do. Those were the days of liberal modernism my friend. We thought they'd never end. We'd sing and dance forever and a day. We'd live the life we choose. We'd fight and never lose. For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la la la La la la la la la. La la la la La la la la la la. Then the busy years went rushing by us. We lost our starry notions on the way. Oh my friend we're older but no wiser. For in our hearts the dreams are still the same." (Paraphrase of Those Were The Days by Mary Hopkin).Goyathlay (talk) 11:19, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
- P.S. The website was never very interesting. It does cover some obscure crackpot ideas such as Project Blue Beam that other wikis do not cover. But the website's ideological biases have always caused it to promote false ideas posing as rigorously tested science.Goyathlay (talk) 12:58, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

- It is fun to create a new user on a Wiki (just today, even!) just to bitch about the old yesteryears of the site and complain about the climate today. The fine art of trolling, indeed, has taken a nosedive since the old days. People used to be not so obvious. PanGalacticGargleBlaster (talk) 13:26, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
- Should I add the template on their talk page? Nutty Roux MarioSuperstar77 (talk) 15:56, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
- I honestly doubt this new person is Nutty. ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 17:38, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
- western Leftism is insanely inconvenient problem and a great threat to the eternal status quo. Hopefully its shelf-life end's soon and LGTBQ+ people, visible minorities, the disabled, religious minorities and all other marginalised can go back to taking their insults, discrimination and even violence against them with silence, non-reaction, grace, dignity and knowing their place. I miss the days when I heard casual tiring gay jokes or even gay bashing and didn't have the resolve to speak up for myself and others. Goyathlay...could you teach us how to return to a straight-white-male paradise? ShabiDOO 18:40, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
