The Charleston church shooting was a racially-motivated mass shooting that occurred on June 17, 2015 in Charleston, South Carolina, United States, where Dylann Roof, a 21-year-old self-identified white supremacist, murdered nine African Americans at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church (commonly referred to as "Mother Emanuel), a historic black church. Prior to the attack, Roof created a website where he posted a racist manifesto, where he espoused hatred of black people, and claimed to have been inspired by the shooting of Trayvon Martin. He also claimed that he chose the church in Charleston because of its historical association with the abolition and civil rights movements, and also confessed after the shooting that he hoped to start a "race war." Roof was found guilty in December 2016 and sentenced to death. Roof has no remorse for the attack.
